Herein, a defective zeolite-carbon (CFR@HZSM-5) nanocomposite-supported nano-scale Pd catalyst (Pd/CFR@HZSM-5) was facilely synthesized for selective H2-free hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of vanillin (VL) under mild conditions. The optimal Pd/CFR@HZSM-5(2:1) catalysts show excellent activity (the 99% yield to 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol) and high turnover frequency in polymethylhydrosiloxane at 60 degrees C. According to spectral analysis, there is an abundant carbon defect structure on the surface of the CFR@HZSM-5 nanocomposite, which can provide unique sites for capturing Pd metal nanoparticles (NPs) and serve as active sites to promote the adsorption of substrates. The stable and high-dispersion Pd NPs are fastened with carbon atoms in the vacancy defect through strong electronic metal-support interactions, which improved the activity of VL HDO up to four times higher than that of other catalysts under mild conditions. The unique high-dispersion Pd structure and abundant surface defects of Pd/CFR@HZSM-5 catalysts are significant features to brilliant catalytic activity for biomass-derived molecule HDO. Meanwhile, the abundance of acidic sites in the composite carrier catalyst replaces the use of acidic additives in previous catalytic systems. The optimal Pd/CFR@HZSM-5(2:1) catalysts showed good recovery even after five uses. The catalytic system was also applied for various biomass HDO models under mild conditions. This methodology opens new ideas for designing catalysts with high activity and high efficiency for selective HDO of biomass under green and mild conditions.

Selective oxidation to produce target chemicals usually need activation of O-2 at high temperature and/or pressure, which have largely restricted its practical operation and application. Here, we put forward a radical relay strategy coupling photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation toward efficiently selective conversion of benzyl alcohol (BA) to benzaldehyde (BAD). An illuminated BiVO4 (BVO) photoanode covered with an ultrathin (similar to 3 nm) hydrothermally synthesized layered double hydroxide (U-LDH) catalyst and graphene (G) exhibited >99% selectivity to BAD (1.2 V vs. RHE). Mechanistic studies and DFT calculation verified that the hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) generated from the oxidation of water are bound to the surface of U-LDH through hydrogen-bonding interactions and the energy is lowered. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that BA is adsorbed to the U-LDH catalyst, but BAD is not. Thus, the selectivity is favored not only by the controlled oxidation capacity of center dot OH radicals but the desorption of the desired product from the catalyst before further oxidation occurs. This work introduces an alternative PEC way to achieve mild and selective oxidation of BA derivatives based on ternary G@U-LDH@BVO catalysts.

Natural product (NP) structures are a rich source of inspiration for the discovery of new biologically relevant chemical matter. In natural product inspired pseudo-NPs, NP-derived fragments are combined de novo in unprecedented arrangements. Described here is the design and synthesis of a 155-member pyrroquinoline pseudo-NP collection in which fragments characteristic of the tetrahydroquinoline and pyrrolidine NP classes are combined with eight different connectivities and regioisomeric arrangements. Cheminformatic analysis and biological evaluation of the compound collection by means of phenotyping in the morphological cell painting assay followed by principal component analysis revealed that the pseudo-NP classes are chemically diverse and that bioactivity patterns differ markedly, and are dependent on connectivity and regioisomeric arrangement of the fragments.

A novel synthetic strategy toward N-acyl sulfamates was developed. Interestingly, fluorosulfates, a new emerging class of electrophiles, were used to construct the sulfamate core. This precludes handling of chlorosulfonyl isocyanate and sulfamoyl chloride. In combination with amides, a wide and diverse set of N-acyl sulfamates was synthesized, including functionalized bioactive compounds. The consecutive photooxidation and reductive amination of various alcohols in a cascade reaction were realized by the combination of a photocatalyst and several enzymes. Whereas the photocatalyst (sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate) mediated the light-driven, aerobic oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols, the enzymes (various -transaminases) catalyzed the enantio-specific reductive amination of the intermediate aldehydes and ketones. The system worked in a one-pot one-step fashion, whereas the productivity was significantly improved by switching to a one-pot two-step procedure. A wide range of aliphatic and aromatic compounds was transformed into the enantiomerically pure corresponding amines via the photo-enzymatic cascade.

SnOct(2) (Sn(II) 2-ethylhexanoate) catalyzed ROPs of L-lactide were performed in bulk with eight different alcohols as initiators. The time was varied between 1 h and 24 h for all initiators. For two initiators the temperature was also lowered to 115 degrees C. Even-numbered chains were predominantly formed in all polymerizations at short times, but the rate of transesterification (e.g. even/odd equilibration) and the molecular weight distribution were found to depend significantly on the nature of the initiator. Observed transesterification reactions also continued in solid poly(L-lactide), and with the most active initiator, almost total equilibration was achieved even at 130 degrees C. This means that all chains including those of the crystallites were involved in transesterification reactions proceeding across the flat surfaces of the crystallites. The more or less equilibrated crystalline polylactides were characterized by DSC and SAXS measurements with regard to their melting temperature (T-m), crystallinity and crystal thickness.

Selective hydroxylation of different phenylboronic acids to phenols was successfully carried out by using Cu nanoparticles-enzyme hybrid catalysts in water and room temperature. Different Cu-enzyme hybrids containing Cu(II), Cu(I) and Cu(0) nanoparticles species respectively were tested on the monohydroxylation of phenylboronic acid under these mild conditions being hybrids containing Cu(0)NPs the best catalysts, with total selectivity and formation of phenol as unique product. Also, the addition of hydrogen peroxide or the increase of reaction temperature were tested but did not improved these results. The substrate scope was also demonstrated and the Cu(0)NPs hybrid showed excellent results in the monohydroxylation of differento-, m-, p-substituted phenylboronic acid with final yields >95 %. This catalyst showed excellent recyclability after 5 cycles of use.

We discovered that metal center confined in the porphyrin structure can process lower valence state (LV) via reversible photoinduced electron transfer in both singlet and triplet states, which are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), electron spin resonance (ESR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. More importantly, this controlling strategy was hardly influenced by the electronegative properties of surrounding porphyrin structures, at the same time, it can be widely applied to various metal elements such as Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe. This work provides a new vision to fabricate and deeply understand the metal center with lower valence state from single atom level.

Effects of grape maturity, maceration length during winemaking and interaction of both of them on physicochemical parameters, phenolic and volatile composition were investigated in tropical Syrah wines with the aim of finding the best conditions to produce wines that are rich in phenols and positive aroma active compounds. A headspace solid phase micro extraction and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method was improved and validated for the analysis of 41 volatiles. Principal component analysis (PCA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA)-PCA coupled with inspection of statistically significant loadings were important to access the effects of maturation and maceration on wine composition. Wines made from riper grapes (21-23 degrees Brix) stood out in relation to color intensity, total phenolic compounds, and presented high levels of anthocyanins, flavonols, procyanidin A2, and linalool (floral). Thirty days of maceration were linked to higher levels of some flavan-3-ols, gallic acid, a few esters (fruity) and alcohols, (E)-nerolidol (floral), while nonanoic acid (unpleasant aroma) reduced its concentration with prolonged maceration.
