Objective: To characterize the epidemiology of unintentional asphyxias in Mexico from 1999 to 2017. Method: Secondary analysis of vital registries, three national health surveys and information from the safety inspection program of the Ministry of Health in Mexico were used to characterize fatal and non-fatal drownings (ICD-10: W65-W74) and other asphyxias including suffocation, chocking and strangulation (ICD-10: W75-W84), and to estimate the level of exposure to different risk factors within households and daycares. Results: 100,834 deaths were registered, 44.66% were drowning and 77.17% male. Drown ngs mainly affect children and adolescents, occur in April, July and August, on Sundays, during the afternoon. Other asphyxias affect children and the elderly more frequently, occur mainly from December to February, on Sundays and from 4 to 6h. According to ENSANut-2012, 53,065 individuals experience a non-fatal asphyxia per year, 26.21% of them with permanent consequences in their health and wellbeing. Important risks of unintentional asphyxias are present in 38% of daycares and 80% of households analyzed. Conclusions: Unintentional asphyxias are a major public health problem that needs to be urgently attended to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular the 3.2. Evidence presented in this work constitutes an input to inform and orient efforts directed to tackle this problem. (C) 2019 SESPAS. Published by Elsevier Espana, S.L.U. This research demonstrated the development of graphene oxide (GO)-gold nanocrystals (AuNCs) compositemodified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the sensitive detection of dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), and 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The GO was synthesized by modified Hummer’s method, which was utilized to prepare GO-AuNCs composites by in situ synthesis method using sodium L(-) malate as a reducing agent. Morphological, X-ray diffraction, and spectral analysis revealed the homogeneous formation of AuNCs with high crystallinity and purity on the GO surface and the sizes of the NCs were decreased with increasing the concentrations of sodium L (-) malate. The optimal GCE/GO-AuNCs sensor exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of DA, UA, and 4-AP. The sensor showed interference-free and selective detection of DA and UA with sensitivities of ca. 30.3 and 17.28 mu A/cm(2)/mu M, respectively, and detection limits of ca. 28 and 50 nM, respectively, with wider dynamic ranges, measured by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique. Whereas, it displayed a sensitivity and detection limit of ca. 5.70 mu A/cm(2)/mu M and 0.017 nM, respectively, for the detection of 4-AP, using current density (J)-voltage (V) measurement method. The sensor also revealed excellent stability, reproducibility, and recoveries of DA, UA, and 4-AP in real samples.

The development of new fluorine-containing building blocks and their efficient synthetic access is currently a challenging research field. Herein, the highly regio- and stereoselective addition of a large range of aldehydes onto trifluoromethylated benzofulvenes was achieved using a simple La/I-2/DIBAL-Cl system via a selective C-F bond activation process. This versatile methodology provided homodienyl alcohols bearing a terminal CF2-alkene with potential further applications, as shown by the dehydration to the first benzofulvenes carrying a difluorovinyl group. In addition, for certain electron-poor aldehydes, unprecedented ipso substitution of the CF3 group in a diene was observed, which, according to DFT studies, is related to the presence of the large, Lewis-acidic lanthanum metal.

An efficient Cu(II)-catalyzed radical addition of maleimides has been achieved. The identified copper catalyst enables the formation of oxime radicals (N-O-center dot) by cleaving the O-H bond in ketoximes, followed by the radical addition to N-substituted maleimides. The oxime radicals (N-O-center dot) were detected and confirmed by EPR spectroscopy and variable-temperature H-1 NMR. The simple one-pot reaction realizes the facile preparation of a variety of oxime ether adduct products in moderate to good yields. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

To understand the individual enological function of different unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs), the separated effects of three different UFAs, linoleic acid (LA), oleic acid (OA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), on yeast fermentation and aroma compounds were investigated in the alcoholic fermentation of Cabernet Sauvignon wine. The results showed that, besides concentration, UFAs types could also influence fermentation process and volatiles in final wine. Low concentrations of UFAs (12 and 60 mg/L), especially LA and OA, significantly promoted fermentation activity and most volatiles when compared to the control, however, the effect became the inhibition with increasing concentrations of UFAs (120 and 240 mg/L). It was interesting to find that OA addition (12 and 60 mg/L) could generate more acetate esters (especially isoamyl acetate) in wine, while 12 mg/L LA facilitated more fatty acids formation (octanoic acid and decanoic acid). In comparison, 120 and 240 mg/L ALA produced more amount of C6 alcohols (1-hexanol) and higher alcohols (isobutyl alcohol and 2,3-butanediol). UFAs additions were unfavorable for ethyl esters formation, except for an increment of ethyl hexanoate in 12 mg/L OA wine. As a result, different aromatic profiles of wines were generated by variations of UFAs types and levels, as shown by PCA. The transcriptional data revealed that the expressions of aroma-related genes, such as BAT1, BAT2, PDC1, PDC5, PDC6, ACC1, FAS1, ATF1, EEB1, and EHT1 were correlated with aroma compounds productions in different treatments. Our data suggested that the three UFAs have different enological functions and they could generate different aromatic profiles. Thus, besides concentrations, it is essential to consider the types of UFAs when applying the strategy to adjust UFAs contents to modulate the aromatic quality of wines.

Based on the difficulty of the refractory organic compounds degradation in water by the traditional wastewater treatment methods, the research relies on the technology of the dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBDP) and the catalysis of the nano WO3, investigating the bisphenol A (BPA) degradation in the synergistic system of DBDP/WO3. The coupled degradation percentage of the BPA under different amounts of WO3 addition, different initial solution pH and carrier gas were investigated to confirm the catalysis of the WO3 in the DBDP system. It was obtained from the experimental results that the optimal additive amount of the WO3 was 175 mg L-1 and change of the solution pH value and the carrier gas variety could not change the catalysis of the WO3. The BPA degradation percentage could reach 100% after treating 30 min in the DBDP/WO3 system with 0.5 L min(-1) O-2 as the carrier gas. The WO3 still had a better catalysis after four times usage and the discharge had little effect on the microstructure of the WO3. The existence of the WO3 in the DBDP system could result in the reduction of the O-3 concentration and the enhancement of the H2O2 concentration, which improve the catalysis of the WO3 in the DBDP system, while the experiments on the scavengers’ addition verified the major role of the (OH)-O-center dot on the BPA degradation. The catalytic mechanism of the WO3 as well as the BPA degradation pathway was also speculated in the research. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Objective Various drugs administered to horses undergoing surgical procedures can release histamine. Histamine concentrations were evaluated in horses prepared for surgery and administered butorphanol or morphine intraoperative infusions. Study design Prospective studies with one randomized. Animals A total of 44 client-owned horses. Methods In one study, anesthesia was induced with xylazine followed by ketamine-diazepam. Anesthesia was maintained with guaifenesin-xylazine-ketamine (GXK) during surgical preparation. For surgery, isoflurane was administered with intravenous (IV) morphine (group M: 0.15 mg kg(-1) and 0.1 mg kg(-1) hour(-1); 15 horses) or butorphanol (group B: 0.05 mg kg(-1) and 0.01 mg kg(-1) hour(-1); 15 horses). Histamine and morphine concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunoassay before opioid injection (time 0), and after 1, 2, 5, 30, 60 and 90 minutes. In a subsequent study, plasma histamine concentrations were measured in 14 horses before drug administration (baseline), 15 minutes after IV sodium penicillin and 15 minutes after starting GXK IV infusion. Statistical comparison was performed using ANOVA for repeated measures. Pearson correlation compared morphine and histamine concentrations. Data are presented as mean +/- standard deviation. Significance was assumed when p < 0.05. Results With histamine, differences occurred between baseline (3.2 +/- 2.4 ng mL(-1)) and GXK (5.2 +/- 7.1 ng mL(-1)) and between baseline and time 0 in group B (11.9 +/- 13.4 ng mL(-1)) and group M (11.1 +/- 12.4 ng mL(-1)). No differences occurred between baseline and after penicillin or between groups M and B. Morphine concentrations were higher at 1 minute following injection (8.1 +/- 5.1 ng mL(-1)) than at 30 minutes (4.9 +/- 3.1 ng mL(-1)) and 60 minutes (4.0 +/- 2.5 ng mL(-1)). Histamine correlated with morphine at 2, 30 and 60 minutes. Conclusions and clinical relevance GXK increased histamine concentration, but concentrations were similar with morphine and butorphanol.
