We describe here the facile construction of sterically hindered tertiary alkyl ethers and thioethers via the Zn(OTf)(2)-catalyzed coupling of alcohols/phenols with unactivated tertiary alkyl bromides and the Cu(OTf)(2)-catalyzed thiolation of unactivated tertiary alkyl oxalates with thiols. The present protocol represents one of the most effective unactivated tertiary C(sp(3))-heteroatom bond-forming conditions via readily accessible Lewis acid catalysis that is surprisingly less developed.

A facile and general method for constructing carbon-heteroatom (C-P, C-O, C-S, and C-N) bonds via C-N cleavage of benzyl ammonium salts under transition-metal-free conditions was reported. The combination of t-BuOK and 18-crown-6 enabled a wide range of substituted benzyl ammonium salts to couple readily with different kinds of heteroatom nucleophiles, i.e. hydrogen phosphoryl compounds, alcohols, thiols, and amines. Good functional group tolerance was demonstrated. The scale-up reaction and one-pot synthesis were also successfully performed.

Based on our previous work on successful gelation of poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline)-grafted chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) with high polar media, in this study, we investigated the preparation and gelation behaviors of the ChNFs having different poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) graft chains, that is, poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline), poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline), and poly(2-butyl-2-oxazoline), with various disperse media. The grafting was carried out by reactions of living propagating ends of poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline)s with amino groups present on the self assembled ChNFs, which were obtained from a chitin ion gel. The products formed gels in the reaction mixtures, which could be converted into hydrogels. All the products with the three poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) graft chains formed gels with high polar media. Besides, gelation of the product with poly(2-butyl-2-oxazoline) was observed by immersing it in relatively non-polar media such as benzyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, and toluene. The formation process of network structures by the grafting of poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline)s on ChNFs is proposed to induce gelation of the products.

The neutral trichloro[hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)methane]vanadium(III) [VCl3(Tpm)] (Tpm = HC(pz)(3); pz = pyrazolyl) C-scorpionate complex was immobilized on amine-functionalized mesoporous silica (aptesSBA-15) via an impregnation method forming the [VCl3(Tpm)]@aptesSBA-15 composite. The immobilization of the vanadium compound was confirmed by several characterization techniques, namely SEM/EDS, powder XRD, FT-IR/ATR, ICP and BET surface area analysis, revealing the successful incorporation of the complex, and confirming the structural and morphological preservation of the porous support and the vanadium complex. The vanadium composite was tested as heterogeneous catalyst for the peroxidative oxidation of benzyl alcohol under mild conditions and its catalytic performance was compared to that of the analogous homogeneous [VCl3(Tpm)] complex. The catalytic studies were extended to other substrates. The effect of various parameters, such as amount and type of oxidant, catalyst and additives, temperature and reaction time were investigated allowing to reach overall yields of ca. 60% and turnover numbers (TONs) up to ca. 7.6 x 10(3). The results obtained demonstrated the higher performance of the heterogeneous catalyst using much less [VCl3(Tpm)] complex under a solvent-free system. Furthermore, consecutive reaction cycles could be performed, showing its recycling capacity. Structural stability was also investigated, indicating the viability of the vanadium C-scorpionate composite as catalyst for other oxidative reactions with high industrial interest.

The oxytetracycline fermentation broth residue (OFR) is an abundant solid waste in the fermentation industry, which is hazardous but tricky to treat. The resource utilization of the waste OFR is still challenging. In this study, a novel route of using OFR was proposed that OFR was used as the organic ligands to construct a new hafnium based catalyst (Hf-OFR) for Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reactions of biomass-derived platforms. The acidic groups in OFR were used to coordinate with Hf4+, and the carbon skeleton structures in OFR were used to form the spatial network structures of the Hf-OFR catalyst. The results showed that the synthesized Hf-OFR catalyst could catalyze the MPV reduction of various carbonyl compounds under relatively mild reaction conditions, with high conversions and yields. Besides, the Hf-OFR catalyst could be recycled at least 5 times with excellent stability in activity and structures. The prepared Hf-OFR catalyst possesses the advantages of high efficiency, a simple preparation process, and low cost in ligands. The proposed strategy of constructing catalysts using OFR may provide new routes for both valuable utilization of the OFR solid waste in the fermentation industry and the construction of efficient catalysts for biomass conversion.

A novel metal-free catalytic one-pot approach has been developed for the esterification of aralkyl ketones with alcohols under open-air atmospheric conditions. The inexpensive iodide/oxone reagent system allowed the cascade C(sp(3))-H bond oxygenation, selective C-C bond cleavage and esterification through the both radical and ionic pathways in a stepwise manner in one-pot. This mild, convenient and economically viable catalytic method tolerates the various functional groups to provide the corresponding alkyl benzoates in up to 98% yields with up to 99% selectivity. The efficiency and feasibility of scale-up of the present catalytic system was demonstrated with gram scale experiments (up to 10 gram scale).

The new electrocatalytic multicomponent transformation has been found: the electrolysis of arylaldehydes, N,N ‘-dimethylbarbiturate, and cycloxehane-1,3-diones in alcohols in the presence of sodium bromide as a mediator in an undivided cell results in the formation of substituted unsymmetric spirobarbituric dihydrofurans in 62%-76% yields. The optimized reaction conditions and a mechanistic rationale for this electrocatalytic multicomponent transformation are presented. This new electrocatalytic process is a facile and efficient way to produce substituted unsymmetric spirobarbituric dihydrofurans containing both barbituric and 3,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1-benzofuran-4(2H)-one fragments, which are promising compounds for different biomedical applications, among them are anticonvulsants, anti-AIDS agents, and antiinflammatory remedies. The scaffold approach was employed to find a protein, which may be influenced by the synthesized compounds-human aldose reductase was proposed. It was shown by molecular docking studies that such a scaffold search is beneficial and tetrahydro-2 ‘ H,4H-spiro[benzofuran-2,5 ‘-pyrimidines] used in this approach are promising for the development of novel aldose reductase inhibitors.

The 2-Aminonicotinonitrile derivative was reacted with different bi-functional reagents such as formamide, thiourea, acetic anhydride, and phthalic anhydride under optimized conditions to give pyrimidine, thiourea, acetamide, and isoindoline derivatives, respectively, When it was treated with active methylene reagents as malononitrile, phenacyl bromide, and ethyl bromoacetate under varied experimental modulation, it afforded 1, 8-naphthyridine, ethyl, and methylamino nicotinonitrile derivatives, respectively.
