In this study, we present a versatile and easy procedure for modifying a cobalt ferrite nanoparticle step by step. A new nanocatalyst was prepared via Cu(II)immobilized onto CoFe2O4@HT@Imine. The catalyst was fully characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analyses. The current procedure as a green protocol offers benefits including a simple operational method, an excellent yield of products, mild reaction conditions, minimum chemical wastes, and short reaction times. Without any significant reduction in the catalytic performance, up to five recyclability cycles of the catalyst were obtained. The optimization results suggest that the best condition in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol derivatives is 0.003 g of the CoFe2O4@HT@Imine-Cu(II)catalyst, TEMPO, at 70 degrees C under solvent-free condition and air.

Industrial-scale synthesis of eldecalcitol is described. AA highly diastereoselective epoxidation of p-methoxybenzyl (PMB) protected dienol at room temperature provides the key epoxide intermediate with a secondary hydroxyl group, which is alkylated with a triflate to set up all of the subunits at the C-1, C-2, and C-3 positions of the A-ring fragment. Selective protecting group manipulation followed by palladium-catalyzed cyclization then provides the A-ring synthon. The C/D-ring fragment is obtained by (1) direct C-H hydroxylation of Grundman’s ketone using in situ prepared trifluoropropanone dioxirane and (2) protection. Finally, the coupling of the A-ring with the C/D-ring fragment, global deprotection, and recrystallization provide the highly crystalline eldecalcitol.

In search of potent anti-inflammatory agents, twenty-four chalcone derivatives including seven new compounds (13 – 17, 21 and 23) containing pyrrole moiety were designed, synthesized, and assessed for their nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E-2 (PGE(2)) suppression ability on IFN-gamma/LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Results showed that none of the synthesized compounds were PAINS-associated molecules, with 3-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl) prop-2-en-1-one (compound 16) exhibiting remarkable inhibition activity towards PGE(2) and NO production with IC50 values of 0.5 +/- 1.5 mu M and 12.1 +/- 1.5 mu M, respectively. Physicochemical and ADMET studies showed that majority of the compounds obey to Lipinski’s rule of five (RO5) having high blood brain barrier (BBB) penetration, human intestinal absorption (HIA), P- glycoprotein (PgP) inhibition and plasma binding protein (PPB) inhibition. The obtained atomic coordinates for the single-crystal XRD of 16 were then applied in a molecular docking simulation, and compound 16 was found to participate in a number of important binding interactions in the binding sites of ERK and mPGES-1. Based on these results, we have observed the potential of compound 16 as a new hit anti-inflammatory agent, and these findings could serve as a basis for further studies on its mechanism of action.

Fe3O4-PVDF membranes were prepared by blending of magnetic Fe3O4 powders with polyvinylidene fluoride to investigate whether those were usable or not in catalytic membrane reactors. Filtration performances and catalytic activity of membranes in microwave conditions were measured in separate processes. Composite Fe3O4-PVDF membranes were characterized by TG-DTA, FTIR, XRD, SEM and contact angle techniques. Disappearing of alpha-phases at PVDF was observed with increasing amount of additives from XRD diffraction patterns. Decomposition of polymer fastened due to catalytic effect of Fe3O4. Finger-like structures and large number of small pores were observed at the SEM images. Those provided effective transportation of substrate among the active sites of catalyst. At the experiments conducted in batch reactor, 51%, 77%, 66% and 63% benzyl alcohol conversion were recorded for 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% Fe3O4-PVDF composite pieces respectively. Catalyst were separated magnetically and reused several times. On the other hand Fe3O4 blended PVDF membranes provided improved flux and BSA rejection compared with performance of bare PVDF membrane: 41.6% BSA rejection was obtained with 4% Fe3O4-PVDF whereas it was only 6.7% for PVDF. Fe3O4-PVDF composites performed high activity for the benzyl alcohol oxidation in batch reactor and also better filtration at filtration cell. These results promise to obtain practical and low cost membrane material for catalytic reactors usable in microwave support to get fast results. The oxidation of aldehydes is an efficient methodology for the synthesis of carboxylic acids. Herein we hope to report a simple, efficient and recyclable protocol for aerobic oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acid by using C3N4 supported silver nanoparticles (Ag/C3N4) as a catalyst in aqueous solution under mild conditions. Under standard conditions, the corresponding carboxylic acids can be obtained in good to excellent yields. In addition, Ag/C3N4 is convenient for recovery and could be reused three times with satisfactory yields.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have unusual physical properties that are valuable for nanotechnology and electronics, but the chemical synthesis of chirality- and diameter-specific CNTs and pi-conjugated CNT segments is still a great challenge. Reported here are the selective syntheses, isolations, characterizations, and photophysical properties of two novel chiral conjugated macrocycles ([4]cyclo-2,6-anthracene; [4]CAn(2,6)), as (-)/(+)-(12,4) carbon nanotube segments. These conjugated macrocyclic molecules were obtained using a bottom-up assembly approach and subsequent reductive elimination reaction. The hoop-shaped molecules can be directly viewed by a STM technique. In addition, chiral enantiomers with (-)/(+) helicity of the [4]CAn(2,6) were successfully isolated by HPLC. The new tubular CNT segments exhibit large absorption and photoluminescence redshifts compared to the monomer unit. The carbon enantiomers are also observed to show strong circularly polarized luminescence (g(lum)approximate to 0.1). The results reported here expand the scope of materials design for bottom-up synthesis of chiral macrocycles and enrich existing knowledge of their optoelectronic properties.

A new synthesis of treprostinil is described using a plug flow reactor in two of the key steps. First, a Claisen rearrangement reaction is described in scaled flow at multigram amounts. Yields and selectivity of this step are sharply improved compared to those from previous syntheses. Second, the key Pauson-Khand reaction in flow is described under catalytic conditions with 5 mol% of cobalt carbonyl and only 3 equiv. of CO. Scaling up of this reaction safely ensures a good yield of an advanced intermediate which is transformed into treprostinil in three steps. Other improvements are the introduction of the carboxymethyl chain into the phenol from the beginning to reduce the protection-deprotection steps. The synthesis is completed in 14% global yield after 12 linear steps from (S)-epichlorhydrin.

A new series of 1,3-diketone, heterocyclic and alpha, beta-unsaturated derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their AhR antagonist activity using zebrafish and mammalian cells. Compounds 1b, 2c, 3b and 5b showed significant AhR antagonist activity in a transgenic zebrafish model. Among them, compound 3b, and 5b were found to have excellent AhR antagonist activity with IC50 of 3.36 nM and 8.3 nM in a luciferase reporter gene assay. A homogeneous cobalt-catalyzed beta-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols to selectively synthesize ketones via acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling is reported for the first time. Notably, this transformation is environmentally benign and atom economical with water and hydrogen gas as the only byproducts.
