The oil and gas industry suffers from severe economic impact due to the corrosion of pipelines during the industrial oil-well acidizing process and because of the sweet corrosion of steel. One of the most common solutions to counter this issue is applying organic compounds as corrosion inhibitors. Conventionally used inhibitors are quite cumbersome to synthesize, are costly, and most are toxic. Therefore, there exists a need for research and development of novel, cost-effective, and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors showing efficient inhibition performance. The present work describes the basics of corrosion, its economic impact, and the main strategies to counter this issue. Fundamentals of sweet corrosion, the mechanism involved, the influence of various governing factors, and the limitations of the existing inhibitor chemistries are explained. Some of the prominent classes of the environmentally benign sweet corrosion inhibitors such as the biopolymers, heterocyclic molecules, and pharmaceutical products are also outlined. The voltammetric oxidation of five para-substituted acetophenone derivatives (containing nitro, chloro, bromo, methyl and hydroxyl groups as substituents) and that of benzophenone was studied on a platinum and glassy carbon electrode in acetonitrile media. Electrode passivation was observed in the case when all selected compounds are on a glassy carbon electrode; an oxidation peak appeared between 2.5 and 3 V. The voltammograms of 4′-hydroxyacetophenone showed an additional peak around 2 V, which may be associated with the oxidation of the phenol moiety. In the case of a platinum electrode, no relevant peaks appeared on the voltammograms, reflecting the absence of passivation. The use of a redox probe 1,4-dihydroxybenzene showed that the glassy carbon electrode, after cyclization in the solutions of the outlined compounds, has higher sensitivity towards the oxidation product (1,4-benzoquinone) of this compound. An efficient fluorocyclization of alpha,beta-unsaturated amides through a formal halocyclization process is developed. The reaction proceeds under transition-metal-free conditions and leads to the formation of fluorinated oxazolidine-2,4-diones with excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity. The evaluation of the reaction mechanism based on preliminary experiments and density functional theory calculations suggests that a synergetic syn-oxo-fluorination occurs and is followed by an anti-oxo substitution reaction. The reaction opens a new window in the field of stereospecific fluorofunctionalization.

The concept of eutectic molecular liquids (EMLs) was defined, and a strategy to form EMLs based on noncovalent interactions was proposed. We verified the formation and investigated the properties, interaction sites, and interaction energies of the obtained 16 EMLs. Moreover, two new forms of noncovalent interactions, kappa-hole and mu-hole bonding interactions, were proposed, which broaden the understanding of intermolecular interactions. Numerous EMLs can be strategically designed and prepared by simply mixing two parent molecule components based on noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding interactions; pi-pi stacking; and sigma-hole (halogen, chalcogen, pnicogen, and tetrel bonds), pi-hole, kappa-hole, and mu-hole bonding interactions. The properties of EMLs can be finely tailored by selecting or even designing appropriate parent compounds for task-specific applications. Our work presents a substantial step toward the innovative development of liquid systems.

A novel and efficient protocol for oxidation of cumene to cumene hydroperoxide was presented using ambient O-2 catalyzed by very simple metalloporphyrins. The selectivity toward cumene hydroperoxide reached 98.3% in the cumene conversion of 28.1% with T(4-COOH)PPCu as a catalyst at 80 degrees C. The origin of the higher performance of T(4-COOH)PPCu was mainly ascribed to the low catalytic performance of copper(II) in the cumene hydroperoxide decomposition, and the ability of T(4-COOH)PP in stabilizing cumene hydroperoxide through hydrogen-bond interactions between them. Compared with current industrial processes and academic research in oxidation of cumene to cumene hydroperoxide with O-2, the main superiorities of this protocol were the high selectivity, high conversion, simple catalysts, solvent-free, additive-free and mild conditions which made this work an appealing reference for the industrial oxidation of cumene to cumene hydroperoxide, as well as the oxidative functionalization of other C-H bonds in various hydrocarbons.

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) have great potential in plant ecophysiology, yet the role of belowground VOCs in plant stress management remains largely obscure. Analysis of biocontrol producing VOCs into the soil allow detailed insight into their interaction with soil borne pathogens for plant disease management. A root interaction trial was set up to evaluate the effects of VOCs released from Trichoderma viride BHU-V2 on soil-inhabiting fungal pathogen and okra plant growth. VOCs released into soil by T. viride BHU-V2 inhibited the growth of collar rot pathogen, Sclerotium rolfsii. Okra plants responded to VOCs by increasing the root growth (lateral roots) and total biomass content. VOCs exposure increased defense mechanism in okra plants by inducing different enzyme activities i.e. chitinase (0.89 fold), beta-1,3-glucanase (0.42 fold), peroxidase (0.29 fold), poly phenol oxidase (0.33 fold) and phenylalanine lyase (0.7 fold) when inoculated with S. rolfsii. In addition, T. viride BHU-V2 secreted VOCs reduced lipid peroxidation and cell death in okra plants under pathogen inoculated condition. GC/MS analysis of VOCs blend revealed that T. viride BHU-V2 produced more number of antifungal compounds in soil medium as compared to standard medium. Based on the above observations it is concluded that okra plant roots perceive VOCs secreted by T. viride BHU-V2 into soil that involved in induction of plant defense system against S. rolfsii. In an ecological context, the findings reveal that belowground microbial VOCs may play an important role in stress signaling mechanism to interact with plants.

Phenols from various man-made activities pose threats to public health and aquatic ecosystems. A number of technologies (e.g., adsorption, oxidation, and biological methods) have been proposed and tested to remove phenolic compounds from different sources. Among these technologies, oxidation process is considered one of the most efficient tools for abating phenolic compounds because of low cost, easy scalability, and ecofriendly production. In this work, we aim to synthesize and characterize potential catalysts (Co(II) and Cu(II) phthalocyanines 6 and 7) for phenolic compounds oxidation. Different parameters influenced the oxidation process were determined and phenolic compounds oxidize to the less harmful products with high conversion and yield in the presence of Co(II) and Cu(II) phthalocyanine catalysts. Some new spirocarbocyclic compounds with highly diastereoselectivity were synthesized using a simple, green and high efficiency method. The IR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and C.H.N analyses were applied for identification of these compounds. Herein, we report that iron(II)/ammonium persulfate in aqueous acetonitrile mediates the Newman-Kwart rearrangement of O-aryl carbamothioates. Electron-rich substrates react rapidly under moderate heating to afford the rearranged products in excellent yields.
