Herein, we report an efficient protocol for the synthesis of spiro-imidazolidinone-cyclohexadienones from p-quinone methides (p-QMs) and dialkyloxy ureas under mild conditions. The strategy follows a two-step process involving an initial vinylogous conjugate addition of urea derivatives to p-QMs, followed by oxidative dearomative cyclization of open-chain product to the projected spiro-imidazolidinones. This protocol exhibits good functional group tolerance and provides a straightforward method to access spiro-imidazolidinone-cyclohexadienones. In follow-up chemistry, we have shown the debenzylation of spiroimidazolidinones to give N-hydroxycyclic ureas.

Herein we report the generation of benzylic lithiums via an iodine-lithium exchange reaction on benzylic iodides performed in continuous flow using tBuLi as the exchange reagent. The resulting benzylic lithium species are trapped in situ by carbonyl electrophiles under Barbier conditions, resulting in benzylic secondary and tertiary alcohols. This flow procedure further allows the generation of highly reactive heterobenzylic lithium compounds, which are difficult to generate under batch conditions. A multiblock copolymer with increased charge density in the hydrophilic phase was synthesized by utilizing a trisulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbone (SHQS100). To achieve a balance of membrane properties a partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether benzonitrile) hydrophobic phase (6FPAEB) was used in uneven block lengths to form the hydrophilic-hydrophobic multiblock copolymer. Multiblock copolymers were synthesized via nucleophilic aromatic substitution to achieve high molecular weight copolymers and corresponding ductile membranes. Combination of the shorter increased charge density hydrophilic phase and longer partially fluorinated hydrophobic phase resulted in superior proton conductivity and mechanical properties while limiting water uptake and swelling, despite high ion-exchange capacity. The trifunctional SHQSH hydrophilic phase is proposed to produce a more concentrated charge region in the hydrophilic phase, while swelling of the membrane was limited by a longer partially fluorinated hydrophobic phase.

H2SO4(c). The [EBsImH][HSO4]-catalyzed Pechmann condensation reactions proceeded smoothly in a batch setup, with recyclable [EBsImH][HSO4] showing great catalytic activity. The acidic ionic liquid catalyst [EBsImH][HSO4] was recovered from EtOAc/H2O extraction of the product mixture, where the H2O layer was worked up and dried for reuse in consecutive runs of the Pechmann condensation reactions, maintaining >85% conversion for four times. The catalytic reactions were also carried out in a microfluidic flow setup. The flow parameters, the reactant molar amounts, and the additional H2SO4 as a modifying acid catalyst were optimized in the current case study. A minimum conversion rate of 2.8 g/hr of coumarin derivatives was demonstrated.

Production of chiral compounds by green processes like domino reactions is of importance to environmental protection and sustainable development. Nevertheless, finding an appropriate catalyst to control enantioselectivity with satisfaction is a major challenge. Here, we report the accomplishment of a newly developed domino reaction for synthesizing optically active 3-pyrrolines, a class of compounds with various biological properties. The reaction involves the use of (trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates, Schiff bases, and alkynes in the presence of a chiral catalyst (R)-(-)-1,1 ‘-binaphthyl-2,2 ‘-diyl hydrogenphosphate. The key features of this new reaction include the generation of a single product in very good yields (75-85%) with high stereo- and enantio-selectivity; the enantiomeric ratio reaches as high as 98.5 : 1.5. Moreover, it involves an aryne-induced domino reaction and an unusual 1,4-intramolecular proton transfer, which overwhelms the well-established 1,5-proton transfer.

In the present investigation, a series of dihydrotriazine derivatives-bearing 5-aryloxypyrazole moieties were synthesized and their structures were confirmed by different spectral tools. The biological evaluation in vitro revealed that some of the target compounds exerted good antibacterial and antifungal activity in comparison with the reference drugs. Among these novel hybrids, compound 10d showed the most potent activity with minimum inhibitory concentration values (MIC) of 0.5 mu g/mL againstS. aureus4220, MRSA 3506 and E. coli 1924 strain. The cytotoxic activity of the compounds 6d, 6m,10d and 10g was assessed in MCF-7 and HeLa cells. Growth kinetics study showed significant inhibition of bacterial growth when treated with different conc. of 10d. In vitro enzyme study implied that compound 10d exerted its antibacterial activity through DHFR inhibition. Moreover, significant inhibition of biofilm formation was observed in bacterial cells treated with MIC conc. of 10d as visualized by SEM micrographs. [GRAPHICS] .

The complex pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has become a major obstacle in its therapy. One hopeful approach is to develop multifuntional ligands. Here, a total of 23 compounds based on nobiletin structure were designed and synthesized. The neuroprotective activities were evaluated for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-A beta(42) (Amyloid beta-protein 42) neurotoxicity properties by MTT assays. The results demonstrated compound A12 was the most promising derivative against inflammatory (14.6 +/- 0.6 %) and cell damages induced by hydrogen peroxide (47.2 +/- 1.1 %), oxygen glucose deprivation (36.2 +/- 1.1 %) and A beta(42) (40.7 +/- 2.1 %). Molecular docking study revealed A12 formed a greater area of interactions with A beta(42) to prevent it from acquiring a beta sheet conformation for aggregation. Structure-activity relationships revealed the introduction of hydroxyl on ring B and aurone skeleton with a five-membered ring C could be benefit to increase their neuroprotective activities. In summary, A12 might represent a promising multifunctional neuroprotective agent against AD.

A polyacrylonitrile nanofiber (PAN NF) supported silver nanoparticles-graphitic carbon nitride (Ag NPs/g-C3N4) nanoparticles catalyst was fabricated by electrospinning technique. Structural and morphological studies indicate that the spherical Ag NPs present in the g-C3N4 material were well dispersed on the surfaces of the PAN NFs or embedded in the PAN NFs without agglomerating. The catalytic potential of PAN/Ag NPs/g-C3N4 NFs was developed for oxidation of organic substrate such as styrene, -CH2 bonded molecules, and benzene under visible light. The visible-light-mediated activity of the catalyst could be aided by the photoactive nature of the g-C3N4 surface. PAN/Ag NPs/g-C3N4 NFs show good selectivity toward epoxide with higher conversion (98%) in the case of styrene oxidation. Further, ethylbenzene was oxidized to acetophenone with 99% conversion using H2O2. Additionally, the present material also shows excellent C-H oxidation of benzene (99%) into the desired phenol with higher selectivity. PAN/Ag NPs/g-C3N4 NFs possess mesoporous properties with excellent absorptive performance. This hybrid NFs exhibited enhanced activity, excellent stabilization,and recyclability.
