Poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propansulfonic acid) (p(AMPS) hydrogels were synthesized via free radical polymerization reaction technique under mild reaction conditions. The chemical structure of synthesized p(AMPS) anionic macroporous hydrogel was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Synthesized hydrogels were used as template for in situ metal nanoparticle preparation by using Ag(CH3COO) in H2O. Metal nanoparticles embedded p(AMPS)-Ag were visualized by TEM. The metal content of composites was estimated via atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). This metal-nanoparticle porous hydrogel composite was employed in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and H-2 generation from hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH4). The activation energies, enthalpy, and entropy for 4-NP reduction and NaBH4 hydrolysis catalyzed by composite were determined. P(AMPS)-Ag composite was also used as catalyst in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols by emphasizing the effects of different parameters such as temperature, substituent effect, etc. Finally, the catalysts were easily recovered from the reaction media and it could be re-used for the other four runs without significant loss of activity.

The production of esters is largely influenced by functional gene expressions and the nutrition status of grape must. In this study, the effects of unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) mixture (including linoleic acid, oleic acid and linolenic acid) on volatile esters of wine fermented with T73::ATF1 (overexpressing ATFI-encoded alcohol acetyltransferases) and T73::EEB (overexpressing EEB1-encoded acyl-CoA: ethanol O-acyltransferases) were investigated in alcoholic fermentation, respectively. The inoculation of T73::ATF1 into UFAs added juice significantly increased acetate esters production (ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate and phenylethyl acetate) compared to in the control juice. The promotion on ethyl esters biosynthesis was also found in T73::EEB1 when supple. mented with low level of UFAs, but the function became inhibition with the further increment of UFAs concentration. The levels of higher alcohols, medium fatty acids and the major genes expression (ADH1, BAT1, PDC1, ACC1, FAS1 and LAH1) were changed and varied among the both strains. These results indicated that UFAs can modulate the effect of overexpressing ATF1 and EEB1 on esters biosynthesis by influencing the substrates availability. The combination of increasing ATF1 and EEB1 expressions and modulating UFAs content is a potential means to increase the esters production and improve the aromatic quality of wines.

Essential oils and ethanolic extracts of seeds of seven organically and conventionally grown accessions (E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, and E7) of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) were examined for their chemical constituents, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Accession E7 presented the highest essential oil yields of 4.30 +/- 0.45 and 3.24 +/- 0.46%, respectively, for organic and conventional mode. However, E6 noted the lowest ethanolic extract yield in the two modes of cultivation. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis of the essential oils revealed the presence of nine essential components in all plant materials. (E)-anethole, methyl-chavicol, fenchone, and limonene were highly abundant. A considerable antioxidant effect was shown for all accessions and a significant difference (p < .05) was reported in the mode of cultivation of essential oils and ethanolic extracts. Concerning antibacterial activity, the essential oils showed generally higher antibacterial activity on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria than ethanolic extracts for organic and conventional fennel seeds. Practical applications Foeniculum vulgare is an aromatic plant widely used nowadays as flavoring as well as food preservative in foods, such as ice cream, meat, and fish dishes. In this context, the chemical composition and biological activities of essential oil and ethanolic extract from fennel seeds cultivated in organic and conventional modes were studied. Fennel seeds extracts presented a richness in polyphenols and flavonoids. In addition, they showed considerable antioxidant activity, while essential oils had a higher antibacterial activity. There is increase demand, nowadays, for such natural and safe products for future applications in the food industries. Modified graphite oxide (NGO) was used as a support of a manganese oxide of hausmannite type (Mn3O4) nanocatalyst and applied for the degradation of an endocrine disruptor, bisphenol-A (BPA). The prepared nanocomposite/catalyst (NGO-Mn3O4), as well as pure modified graphite oxide and manganese oxide, were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and potentiometric titration. The maximum removal activity for all the materials was measured at pH = 3. The NGO-Mn3O4 nanocomposite showed the highest removal efficiency of BPA at an ambient temperature without light irradiation and/or the addition of chemicals, which can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the composite formation. The nanocomposite exhibited a high catalytic activity for the degradation/oxidation of BPA, which was dramatically higher than that of the pristine Mn3O4 phase. The aim of this work was to evaluate how the use of mixed cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lachancea thermotolerans indigenous yeast strains influences the volatile composition of wine. Multivariate curve resolution (MCR) method has been applied to data analysis. Five fermentation trials were carried out: three co-inoculated with L. thermotolerans: S. cerevisiae, at the ratio of 50:1, 20:1 and 5:1 respectively, and two with a pure culture of each strain. A must from sun-dried Pedro Ximenez grapes was employed. Volatile composition was determined by dual sequential stir bar sorptive extraction, followed by GC-MS analysis. MCR provided 171 peaks. Results in co-inoculation fermentations revealed that the majority compounds obtained in each case followed the same trend as that observed for the pure culture of the strain that was present in a higher proportion. Finally, 50:1 and 20:1 seemed to be the best proportions to obtain a wine with a quality volatile profile.

A series of novel 3-nitro-4-chromanones were synthesized and their in vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated on castration-resistant prostate cancer cell (CRPC) lines using the sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. The amide derivatives showed more potent antitumor activity than their corresponding ester derivatives. Most of the tested compounds showed less toxicity towards human fibroblasts (HAF) compared with the tumor cell lines. The optimal compound 36 possessed much more potent antiproliferative activity than the positive compound cisplatin. The colony formation, cell cycle distribution, apoptosis, transwell migration and wound healing assays of 36 were performed on CRPC cell lines.

A general asymmetric deconstructive alkynylation of cyclic oximes with terminal alkynes was reported using copper/chiral cinchona alkaloid-based N,N,P-ligand catalysts and used to produce more than 60 examples of enantioenriched gamma- and delta-alkynyl nitriles in a highly functional group-compatible manner. A wide variety of low-cost terminal alkynes and easily available cyclic oximes with substituent diversity were found to be well tolerated with the current asymmetric transformation with good functional group tolerance. The resulting chiral alkynyl nitriles are intermediates, which could be converted into skeletally diverse chiral molecules, including delta-alkynyl amides, epsilon-alkenyl carbamate, and zeta-keto nitrile, under suitable reaction conditions.

Constructing polymeric materials with stretchable and self-healing properties arise increasing interest in the field of tissue engineering, wearable electronics and soft actuators. Herein, a new type of supramolecular cross-linker was constructed through host-guest interaction between pillar[5]arene functionalized acrylate and pyridinium functionalized acrylate, which could form supramolecular polymeric material via photo-polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA). Such material exhibited excellent tensile properties, with maximum tensile strength of 3.4 MPa and strain of 3000%, respectively. Moreover, this material can effectively dissipate energy with the energy absorption efficiency of 93%, which could be applied in the field of energy absorbing materials. In addition, the material showed self-healing property after cut and responded to competitive guest.
