Aims and Objectives: Microwave-assisted condensation of acetophenone 1 and aromatic aldehydes 2 gave chalcone analogs 3, which were cyclized to pyrazole derivatives 6a-f via the reaction with hydrazine hydrate and oxalic acid in the presence of the catalytic amount of acetic acid in ethanol. Materials and Methods: The structural features of the synthesized compounds were characterized by melting point, FT-IR, H-1, C-13 NMR and elemental analysis. Results: The antibacterial activities of the synthesized pyrazoles were evaluated against three gram-positive bacteria, such as Enterococcus durans, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and two gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. Conclusion: All the synthesized pyrazoles showed relatively high antibacterial activity against S. aureus strain, and none of them demonstrated antibacterial activity against E. coli.

The synthesis of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocycles has found many applications in the preparation of biomedical intermediates, yet actual synthetic procedures display limitations such as high-loading catalysts, harsh reaction conditions and tedious preparation of heterogeneous catalysts. Alternatively, photocatalysis allows to access functional products with minimum synthetic procedures and waste generation. Here, we present an efficient, simple, green protocol for the synthesis of N- and O-containing six-membered-ring compounds under mild conditions under visible blue light. Various aldehydes and 1,3-diketones can be reacted to afford eight series of corresponding 1,4-dihydropyridines and 4H-benzo[b]pyrans. This protocol has some merits such as the use of abundant and sustainable aqueous ethanol as solvent, short reaction time (within 60 min), no need of catalyst and broad functional group tolerance to afford 81 different series of target molecules in 75-96% yield under mild conditions.

This study investigates the active sites in natural organic matter (NOM) that are important for the removal of Cr (VI), by using Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) modified by NOM (Fe3O4@NOM). NaBH4 is used to selectively reduce carbonyl groups in Fe3O4@NOM MNPs to demonstrate the role of carbonyl structures in the reduction of Cr(VI), especially under irradiation. Results observed using NOM and low molecular weight compounds further demonstrated that carbonyl structures in Fe3O4@NOM MNPs, especially aromatic ketones, can strongly promote Cr(VI) reduction. This phenomenon corresponds well to a model in which charge transfer interactions occur between donors and acceptors in NOM.

Herein we report a straightforward synthetic approach to 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles from readily available primary alcohols using arene diruthenium(II) catalysts. Dinuclear arene ruthenium complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized with the aid of analytical and spectral techniques. A library of 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles was achieved with a yield up to 95% by loading 0.25 mol% of the catalyst. The present protocol is environmentally benign, which is performed under aerobic conditions and liberates water as the sole by-product.

A novel chiral nucleophilic organocatalyst easily synthesized from simple starting materials bearing a 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine skeleton has been developed and successfully applied in the direct enantioselective C-acylation of 3-substituted benzofuranones. In this study, the sinocalamus oldhami alkali lignin was depolymerized into phenolic products in a combined system by using the composite alkali and Ni-W2C/activated carbon (AC) as catalysts. FT-IR, GPC, TG, 2D-HSQC and GC-MS were used to analyze the composition, structure and distribution of degradation products, and the synergistic effect of metal and alkali catalysts on the depolymerization of lignin was also studied. The results showed that Ni-W2C/AC and composite alkali could effectively improve the catalytic degradation efficiency of lignin under mild conditions, 94.4% of lignin was converted and 17.18% of phenolic monomers were obtained under 260 degrees C for 5 h. In this composite system, the synergism of the basic sites, the metal active sites and the Lewis acid sites could promote the cleavage of C-O bonds in the lignin molecule and lower the char formation during the base-catalyzed solvolysis. Phenolic monomers were mainly composed of phenol, 2-methyl-phenol and p-cresol etc.

The paper presents an innovative, chemically modified (methylcyanated) asphaltene-based adsorbent that can be an interesting low-cost alternative for traditional adsorbents. Adsorption properties of adsorbents were examined by inverse gas chromatography technique, adsorption isotherms, and breakthrough curves. A significant increase in retention volume for pyridine, 2-pentanone, nitropropane, toluene, and 1-butanol was observed. Rohrschneider-McReynolds constants revealed an increase in strength of interactions as a result of the modification, especially in strong proton-acceptor interaction (by a factor of 4.6). The surface-free energy of asphaltene adsorbents increased from 136.71 to 169.95 mJ m(-2) after modification. It is similar to the surface-free energy of silica or alumina. Moreover, modified adsorbent shows very high adsorption potential for pyridine. Adsorption isotherms revealed that monolayer adsorption capacity for pyridine increased 1.5 times after modification. Breakthrough curves of pyridine indicate that chemical modification increased the adsorption capacity, removal efficiency, and throughput. Scale-up calculations revealed that adsorption column packed with modified asphaltene adsorbent would be almost two times smaller compared to a column packed with unmodified one. Graphic abstract
