In this work, we developed a novel strategy to synthesize porous (alumino)silicate materials using a single structure-directing agent composed of an imidazole unit with a hydrophobic tail, namely, 1,2-dimethy1-3-hexadecy1-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide (C(16)dMImz). A wide range of products such as ordered mesoporous silicas, layered silica-alumina, and hierarchically porous mordenite zeolite were obtained by varying synthesis parameters such as temperature and aluminum concentration. By changing crystallization temperature, we could control the degree of silica condensation and tune the textural and morphological properties of the final materials. By varying the aluminum concentration in the gel, we can obtain mesoporous amorphous silica-alumina or crystalline mordenite zeolite with, respectively, weak and strong Bronsted acid sites. Obtained acidic silica-alumina materials displayed promising performance in catalytic reactions of linear paraffin hydroisomerization and Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene with benzyl alcohol.

The bromodomain and extraterminal domain (BET) family of epigenetic regulators comprises four proteins (BRD2, BRD3, BRD4, BRDT), each containing tandem bromodomains. To date, small molecule inhibitors of these proteins typically bind all eight bromodomains of the family with similar affinity, resulting in a diverse range of biological effects. To enable further understanding of the broad phenotype characteristic of pan-BET inhibition, the development of inhibitors selective for individual, or sets of, bromodomains within the family is required. In this regard, we report the discovery of a potent probe molecule possessing up to 150-fold selectivity for the N-terminal bromodomains (BD1s) over the C-terminal bromodomains (BD2s) of the BETs. Guided by structural information, a specific amino acid difference between BD1 and BD2 domains was targeted for selective interaction with chemical functionality appended to the previously developed I-BET151 scaffold. Data presented herein demonstrate that selective inhibition of BD1 domains is sufficient to drive anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects.

The polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane complexes, {[(isobutyl)(7)Si7O12]ZrOPri center dot(HOPri)}(2) (I), {[(cyclohexyl)(7)Si7O12]ZrOPri center dot(HOPri)}(2) (II), {[(isobutyl)(7)Si7O12]HfOPri center dot(HOPri)}(2) (III) and {[(cyclohexyl)(7)Si7O12]HfOPri center dot(HOPri)}(2) (IV), were synthesized in good yields from the reactions of M(OPri)(4) (M = Zr, Hf) with R-POSS(OH)(3) (R = isobutyl, cyclohexyl), resp. I-IV catalyze the reductive etherification of 2-hydroxy- and 4-hydroxy and 2-methoxy and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and vanillin to their respective isopropyl ethers in isopropanol as a green solvent and reagent. I-IV are durable and robust homogeneous catalysts operating at temperatures of 100-160 degrees C for days without significant loss of catalytic activity. Likewise, I-IV selectively catalyze the conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-bis(isopropoxymethyl)furane (BPMF), a potentially high-performance fuel additive. Similar results were achieved by using a combination of M(OPri)(4) and ligand R-POSS(OH)(3) as a catalyst system demonstrating the potential of this in situ approach for applications in biomass transformations. A tentative reaction mechanism for the reductive etherification of aldehydes catalysed by I-IV is proposed.

The objective of the study was to characterise co-composting dynamics and maturity of the end products of sewage sludge/ green waste mixtures. We analysed all initial substrates and co-composts, sampled at different composting times for studying (1) physicochemical parameters and (2) organic matter biodegradation and biotransformation using pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Physicochemical analysis indicated compost maturity of the three co-composting mixtures after 200 days. Pyrolysis-GCMS showed that organic matter in sewage sludge generated a large number of different pyrolysis products, most of which had unspecific origin. The pyrolysis products of the three co-compost were classified according to their chemical composition (benzene derivatives, N-containing compounds, phenol derivatives, furan derivates) and according to their chemical structure (polyaromatics, aromatics compounds and aliphatic compounds). These compound classes evolved differently during composting. We suggest two new specific ratios of peak areas from pyrolysis products to describe the biodegradation and to evaluate the degree of maturity during co-composting sludge-green waste: (1) the ratio benzene, methyl (methylethenyl) /benzene, which decrease during composting, and (2) the ratio of Indene/2-methoxy-4 vinyl-phenol which increase during composting. The good correlation between these ratios and physico-chemical parameters confirms their usefulness to evaluate the co-compost maturity. [GRAPHICS] .

Deep eutectic solvents like ionic liquids were used as solvent or catalyst in organic synthesis. In this work, a novel deep eutectic solvent containing triethanolamine and sodium acetate was prepared and studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), potential of hydrogen (pH), viscosity and conductivity. This deep eutectic solvent was applied for the synthesis of tetrahydrodipyrazolopyridines as an efficient reusable catalyst under microwave irradiation. In this study, Fe3O4-MnO2 magnetic composites were prepared and used as catalyst for the catalytic ozonation of BPA in aqueous solution. First, characterization results proved that Fe3O4-MnO2 magnetic composites were prepared successfully. Meanwhile, the advantage of Fe3O4-MnO2/O-3 system was demonstrated by control experiments. The degradation efficiency of BPA in Fe3O4-MnO2 process reached 97.0% under the conditions: Fe3O4-MnO2 = 100 mg/L, O-3 flow rate = 100 mL/min, initial solution pH = 7.0. In addition, the effects of catalyst dosage, O-3 flow rate and initial solution pH on the degradation of BPA were studied respectively. Moreover, the recyclability and stability of Fe3O4-MnO2 magnetic composites were also investigated. The results showed that Fe3O4-MnO2 magnetic composites have high catalytic activity, stability and recyclability for BPA degradation. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates of BPA were detected and the degradation pathways of BPA were proposed comprehensively. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism of Fe3O4-MnO2/O-3 process was proposed. In brief, all the results confirmed that the Fe3O4-MnO2/O-3 process was a simple, nonhazardous, efficient and promising technology for the degradation of BPA in aqueous solution.

Despite the development of targeted therapies in cancer, the problem of multidrug resistance (MDR) is still unsolved. Most patients with metastatic cancer die from MDR. Transmembrane efflux pumps as the main cause of MDR have been addressed by developed inhibitors, but early inhibitors of the most prominent and longest known efflux pump P-glycoprotein (P-gp) were disappointing. Those inhibitors have been used without knowledge about the expression of P-gp by the treated tumor. Therefore the use of inhibitors of transmembrane efflux pumps in clinical settings is reconsidered as a promising strategy in the case of the respective efflux pump expression. We discovered novel symmetric inhibitors of the symmetric efflux pump MRP4 encoded by the ABCC4 gene. MRP4 is involved in many kinds of cancer with resistance to anticancer drugs. All compounds showed better activities than the best known MRP4 inhibitor MK571 in an MRP4-overexpressing cell line assay, and the activities could be related to the various substitution patterns of aromatic residues within the symmetric molecular framework. One of the best compounds was demonstrated to overcome the MRP4-mediated resistance in the cell line model to restore the anticancer drug sensitivity as a proof of concept.

Methods to activate the relatively stable ether C-O bonds and convert them to other functional groups are desirable. One-electron reduction of ethers is a potentially promising route to cleave the C-O bond. However, owing to the highly negative redox potential of alkyl aryl ethers (E-red < -2.6 V vs SCE), this mode of ether C-O bond activation is challenging. Herein, we report the visible-light-induced photocatalytic cleavage of the alkyl aryl ether C-O bond using a carbazole-based organic photocatalyst (PC). Both benzylic and non-benzylic aryl ethers underwent C-O bond cleavage to form the corresponding phenol products. Addition of Cs2CO3 was beneficial, especially in reactions using a N-H carbazole PC. The reaction was proposed to occur via single-electron transfer (SET) from the excited-state carbazole to the substrate ether. Interaction of the N-H carbazole PC with Cs2CO3 via hydrogen bonding exists, which enables a deprotonation-assisted electron-transfer mechanism to operate. In addition, the Lewis acidic Cs cation interacts with the substrate alkyl aryl ether to activate it as an electron acceptor. Characterization of volatile off-odor compounds in thermal duck egg gels was investigated by gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS), odor activity values (OAVs) and aroma recombination. The results demonstrated that the off-odor of thermal duck egg mainly came from egg yolk (EY), and content of aldehydes was the highest in EY. Anaerobic treatment in nitrogen contributed to decreased off-odor sensory scores and volatile components of the heated egg gels. Aerobic EY gels (treated in air) were determined to contain eight volatile compounds with OAVs greater than 1, such as hexanal, nonanal, benzaldehyde, (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-nonenal, (E, E)-2,4-decadienal, 1-octen-3-ol and 2-pentylfuran. However, three key volatile components (nonanal, benzaldehyde and (E)-2-nonenal) with OAVs greater than 1 were found in anaerobic EY gels. Moreover, on the basis of results of recombination and omission experiments, hexanal, (E)-2-octenal, (E, E)2,4-decadienal, 1-octen-3-ol and 2-pentylfuran were identified as key off-odor components in thermal EY gels. Sensory evaluation of the recombination model with five aroma compounds scored 4.38 out of 5 points. The major aroma profile of the off-flavor from egg EY gels included strong fatty, nutty, and mushroom aromas.

The electrochemical in-situ oxidative sulfonylation of phenols with sulfinic acids access to sulfonylated hydroquinones has been developed. A series of sulfonylated hydroquinones were prepared under mild mediator-, catalyst- and exogenous-oxidant-free conditions. Notably, such an electrochemical in-situ-oxidative synthetic strategy presented wide functional group tolerance and amenability to gram-scale synthesis with 62-80% yields.
