Background Evidence on longitudinal variability of serum uric acid (SUA) and risk of all-cause mortality in the general population is limited, as many prior studies focused on a single measurement of SUA. Methods A total of 53,956 participants in the Kailuan study who underwent three health examinations during 2006 to 2010 were enrolled. Variability of SUA was measured using the coefficient of variation (primary index), standard deviation, average real variability, and variability independent of the mean. Cox proportional hazard regressions were used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association of variability of SUA with subsequent risk of all-cause mortality, considering its magnitude and the direction and across different baseline SUA categories. Results Over a median follow-up of 7.04 years, 2728 participants died. The highest variability of SUA was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, the HR was 1.33 (95% CI, 1.20-1.49) compared with the lowest variability. In this group, both a large fall (HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.14-1.44) and rise (HR, 1.18; 95% 1.05-1.32) in SUA were related to risk of all-cause mortality. These associations were similar across different baseline SUA categories. Consistent results were observed in alternative measures of SUA variability. Moreover, individuals with higher variability in SUA were more related to common risk factors than those with stable SUA. Conclusions Higher variability in SUA was independently associated with the risk of all-cause mortality irrespective of baseline SUA and direction of variability in the general population.

For developing low-temperature processed electron-transporting layer in perovskite solar cells, titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticle was synthesized through the non-hydrolytic sol-gel route. TiO2 nanoparticles showed uniform film coverage, high transparency in the visible region with wide optical bandgap, and high electrical conductivity after systematically optimizing the synthetic reaction time, the thermal annealing temperature, and the concentration of Nb doping. When TiO2 nanoparticle was introduced as an electron-transporting layer through low-temperature deposition process, the perovskite solar cells fabricated in ambient conditions showed high efficiencies of 18.97% and 13.51% on the rigid glass and the flexible plastic substrate, respectively. An impressively high open circuit voltage of 1.17 V and short circuit current density of 22.21 mA cm(-2) were achieved due to the well aligned work function and better electrical conductivity of Nb-doped LT-TiO2 layer. Importantly, solar cells fabricated with TiO2 nanoparticle showed high thermal stability, negligible hysteresis, and reduced charge recombination loss at electron-transporting layer/perovskite interfaces. This study shows that TiO2 nanoparticle can be obtained through the low cost and facile synthesis and has high potential as an electron-transporting layer for low-temperature processable perovskite solar cells.

Two series of novel morpholinopyrimidine derivatives were synthesized and screened for their in-vitro cytotoxic activity against 60 tumor cell line by the National Cancer Institute, USA. The in-vitro cytotoxic IC50 values for the most active compounds 6e, 6g, and 6l against the most sensitive cell line leukemia SR were estimated (IC50 = 0.76, 13.59, and 4.37 uM, respectively). To investigate their PI3K enzyme inhibition activity, the assay was done on Class IA (alpha, beta, & delta) isoforms. The IC50 values were very promising: compound [6e = 11.73 (alpha), 6.09 (beta), 11.18 (delta)], compound [6g = 8.43 (alpha), 15.84 (beta), 30.62 (delta)], and compound [6l = 13.98 (alpha), 7.22 (beta), 10.94 (delta)], compared to the reference compound LY294002 = 6.28 (alpha), 4.51 (beta), 4.60 (delta) uM, respectively. Moreover, cell cycle analysis and annexin V-FITC staining were done on Leukemia SR, there was arrest at G2/M phase and apoptosis was induced. Finally, docking study was performed to analyze the interactive mode of these derivatives in PI3K alpha ATP-binding site. These outcomes proved that compounds 6e, 6g, and 6l are potential leads for further optimization as antileukemic agents.

Qing Dai (Naturalis Indigo) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used as a topical agent in moderate psoriasis, targeting interleukin-17 (IL-17). In this study, it was prepared from the aerial parts of Strobilanthes cusia. Three undescribed indole alkaloid derivatives, indigodoles A-C, along with seven known compounds were isolated from this preparation of Qing Dai and their structures were elucidated from spectroscopic data, including NMR, MS, UV, IR, optical rotation, and CD. As well, most compounds were tested against IL-17. Indigodole C and tryptanthrin could significantly inhibit IL-17 production of Th17 cells. In addition, indigodole A and indirubin showed notably anti-IL-17 gene expression in dose-dependent effects without cytotoxicities toward Th17 and Jurkat cells, respectively. Overall, our studies indicate that the aforementioned indole alkaloids could contribute to anti-IL 17 properties of Qing Dai.

A series of multistage (pressure-sensitive/hot melt) adhesives utilizing dynamic thia-Michael bonding motifs are reported. The benzalcyanoacetate Michael acceptors used in this work undergo bond exchange under ambient conditions without external catalysis, facilitating pressure-sensitive adhesion. A key feature of this system is the dynamic reaction-induced phase separation that lends reinforcement to the otherwise weakly bonded materials, enabling weak, repeatable pressure-sensitive adhesion under ambient conditions and strong adhesion when processed as a hot melt adhesive. By using different pairs of benzalcyanoacetate cross-linking units, the phase separation characteristics of the adhesives can be directly manipulated, allowing for a tailored adhesive response.

Imine reduction is one of the most frequently used transformations in organic synthesis. In this work, we developed novel partially carbonized chitin/Ru microspheres (PCRuMs) featuring a tightly assembled nanofiber structure as a highly efficient catalyst of imine hydroboration for the first time. The hydroboration using HBpin as the hydrogen source proceeds under mild conditions (room temperature and a green solvent). The PCRuM catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity, chemoselectivity, and recyclability for the hydroboration of imines. Various functional groups including NO2, C N, CO2Me, and C=C bonds were tolerated. Moreover, the PCRuM catalyst can be reused for up to eight runs without noticeably losing activity.

The multicomponent reaction between tetronic acid (1), 2-aminoanthracene (2) and aromatic aldehydes (3) and the subsequent addition of DDQ produced a series of naphtho [2,3-f]quinoline lactone derivatives (5) in good yield. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra of these derivatives are described. The optical absorption and emission properties of the compounds were studied in different solvents and pH. The results show that the naphthoquinoline derivatives have emission bands of 453-517 nm and one of them, compound 5d, had an unexpected bathochromic shift (597 nm) caused by an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). The luminescent properties of 5d in different solvents and pH, although preliminary, indicate the potential use of this compound as a chemical sensor.

The radiation-induced reactions of ligands play an important role in the sensitization of metal oxide nanocluster resists. However, the details in the radiation chemistry of ligands for metal oxide nanocluster resists are still unknown. In this study, the radiation-induced reactions of carboxylic acid ligands were investigated using a pulse radiolysis method. The rate constants for the reactions of molecular and ionic forms of tiglic, angelic, o-toluic, and p-toluic acids with hydrated electrons were determined. The rate constants for the reactions of tiglic, angelic, benzoic, o-toluic, and p-toluic acids with dodecane radical cations were also determined. The radical ions of tiglic and angelic acids were more unstable than those of benzoic, o-toluic, and p-toluic acids. The results obtained in this study indicate that the molecular structures of ligands affect their reactivity to cationic and anion species and the stability of their radical cations and anions. Six heterobimetallic alkali metal dioxidovanadium(V) coordination polymer complexes {[M-6{VO(mu-O)}(2)(mu-OH)(4)(mu(4)-slox/nph)].n DMF}(infinity) where M = Na, K, and Cs; n = 1 for (1), 0 for (2)-(6) of two dihydrazone ligands, disalicylaldehydeoxaloyldihydrazone (H4slox) and bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde)oxaloyldihydrazone (H4nph) are reported. All the complexes have been characterized by various physicochemical techniques such as elemental analyses, molar conductance, IR, NMR, UV-vis, and cyclic voltammetry. The IR, (HNMR)-H-1, and (CNMR)-C-13 spectral data suggest that the dihydrazones are coordinated through phenolate/naphtholate oxygen, enolate oxygen, and azine nitrogen atoms to the metal centres. The structure of complex {[Na-6{VO(mu-O)}(2)(mu-OH)(4)(mu(4)-slox)].DMF}(infinity) (1) is also determined by single crystal X-ray data, which revealed that the H(4)slox coordinated via all possible dative sites to metal centres as tetrabasic octadentate ligand. The vanadium metal centres adopted distorted square-pyramidal coordination geometries, and the sodium atoms are also in five coordination atmospheres. The electronic spectra of the complexes showed LMCT bands in addition to intra-ligand pi -> pi* and n -> pi* transitions. As evident from the cyclic voltammetry, the complexes showed two metal centred electron transfer reactions {[((VVV)-V-V(slox)(2-)/(VVIV)-V-V(slox)(3-)] and [((VVIV)-V-V(slox)(3-)/(VVIV)-V-V(slox)(4-)]}, in addition to the ligand centred electron transfer reactions. Further, bovine serum albumin (BSA interaction studies of the complexes {[Na (6){VO(mu-O)} (2)(mu-OH) (4)(mu(4)-slox)].DMF} (infinity) (1) and [Na-6{VO(mu-O)}(2)(mu-OH)(4)(mu(4)nph)](infinity) (4) revealed strong binding affinity. Moreover, the catalytic studies of the complexes (1) and (4) were found to be effective for the oxidation of alcohols into their corresponding aldehydes and ketones and bromination of some organic substrates in the presence of H2O2 as an oxidizing agent.
