We aim at encapsulating fragrances made of a variety of lipophilic species to slow down their diffusion. Our strategy is to develop capsules by polymerizing the water intermediate phase of an oil-in-water-in-oil double emulsion. In other terms, our system consists in a direct emulsion of fragrance (O1) in a water phase (W) containing monomer, initiator, and cross-linker. To obtain the double emulsion, this direct emulsion, stabilized by a hydrophilic surfactant, is itself dispersed in an external lipophilic solvent used in perfumery (O2) and stabilized by a lipophilic surfactant. Polymerization of the intermediate water phase aims at obtaining a 3D network. Differently from nowadays-proposed capsules, this strategy allows polymerization only taking place in the water phase rather in the phase containing the fragrance. Moreover, the obtained 3D network is supposed to play the role of an effective barrier limiting the diffusion of the inner lipophilic species towards either the external solvent or air. Such an approach implies the combination of a formulation step to elaborate the double emulsion using two antagonistic surfactants, a hydrophilic one and a lipophilic one, and of the polymerization of the intermediate phase. Insertion of the polymerizable species in the double emulsion shall not destabilize it. Some monomers exhibiting interfacial affinity and interfering with the formulation of the double emulsion have to be avoided. By varying the nature of the monomers and the cross-linker to monomer ratio, capsules with high encapsulation efficiencies and with various mechanical properties have been obtained.

Composite materials consisting of nanoscale gold particles and protective polymer shells were designed and tested as catalysts in various chemical reactions. Initially, the systematic incorporation of multiple gold nanoparticles into a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) particle was achieved by an in situ method under light irradiation. The degree of gold nanoparticle loading, along with the structural and morphological properties, was examined as a function of the amount of initial gold ions and reducing agent. As these gold nanoparticles were physically-embedded within the polymer particle in the absence of strong interfacial interactions between the gold nanoparticles and polymer matrix, the readily-accessible surface of the gold nanoparticles with a highly increased stability allowed for their use as recyclable catalysts in oxidation, reduction, and coupling reactions. Overall, the ability to integrate catalytically-active metal nanoparticles within polymer particles in situ allows for designing novel composite materials for multi-purpose catalytic systems.

The Name is Mequinol. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of 150-76-5.

Pyroligneous acid (PA) was obtained by condensation of the vapors produced in the thermal decomposition of culms residues from Guadua angustifolia Kunth (G. angustifolia) cultivated in Colombia, with and without previous preservation treatment with borax salts. Chemical characterization by GC-MS showed that PA extracts has high content of phenolic compounds. Mequinol, isocreosol, 4-ethylphenol, 4-ethyl-2-methoxyphenol, 3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxytoluene and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol were the most abundant substances, identified. The total phenolic content (TPC) and DPPH free radical scavenging activity, were investigated. TPC showed a concentration of 1.959 mg GA g(-1) +/- 0.010 and 3.844 mg GA g(-1) +/- 0.027 to PAC and PAS samples. These samples also exhibited high DPPH activity of 70.975%+/- 0.921 and, 16.667%+/- 0.298, respectively. The chemical composition, TPC and DPPH results indicate that the PA extracts obtained from G. angustifolia may be used as a raw material in the food industry as natural preservative, in medicine as alternative to antibiotics and in agriculture as insect repellent and foliar fertilizer.

A visible-light photoredox-catalyzed tandem trifluoromethylation/cyclization/remote oxidation of 1,6-dienes has been achieved. A broad range of trifluoromethyl group-containing tetrahydrofurans or tetrahydropyrroles could be generated in good yields and with excellent diastereoselectivity by using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the oxidant. The mild and facile protocol affords direct access to trifluoromethyl group-bearing tetrahydrofurans and tetrahydropyrroles via difunctionalization of olefins.

The Pot, Atom, and Step Economy (PASE) approach is based on the Pot economy principle and unites it with the Atom and Step Economy strategies; it ensures high efficiency, simplicity and low waste formation. The PASE approach is widely used in multicomponent chemistry. This approach was adopted for the synthesis of previously unknown hydroxyquinolinone substituted chromeno[2,3-b]pyridines via reaction of salicylaldehydes, malononitrile dimer and hydroxyquinolinone. It was shown that an ethanol-pyridine combination is more beneficial than other inorganic or organic catalysts. Quantum chemical studies showed that chromeno[2,3-b]pyridines has potential for corrosion inhibition. Real time H-1 NMR monitoring was used for the investigation of reaction mechanism and 2-((2H-chromen-3-yl)methylene)malononitrile was defined as a key intermediate in the reaction.

We have developed a supramolecular (close form) [2]pseudorotaxane polymer containing the green-emissive (lambda(em) = 523 nm) BODIPY-based pillar[5]arene host and the non-emissive spiropyran (SP)-based cyano guest (close form), which can be converted to a red-emissive (lambda(em) = 630 nm) merocyanine (MC)-based guest (open form) upon UV exposure as well as turned into a bi-fluorophoric host-guest polymer with ratiometric PL emission of Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) behavior in THF/water solution (60% H2O, v/v). The equal host-guest molar ratio and the formation of the [2]pseudorotaxane polymer can be further verified using H-1 NMR titration, Job’s plot analysis, DOSY and ITC experiments. Hence, the bi-fluorophoric host-guest (with the MC open form) polymer possessed the highest red-emission of the MC acceptor, which was also confirmed using TRPL measurements to possess the shortest lifetime of 0.37 ns and the best FRET efficiency of 83.5%. Since the MC unit could react with CN- to induce a non-emissive quenching process, the mono-fluorophoric guest would show turn-off PL behavior and detect cyanide ions with a corresponding limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.94 mu M. In comparison, the optimal LOD value of 0.48 mu M toward CN- anion could be achieved by our bi-fluorophoric host-guest polymer via the FRET-OFF process. Therefore, cyanide detection and cell viability tests using the open form of the [2]pseudorotaxane polymer suggest useful bio-imaging applications in living cells.

UV/Vis absorption and NMR spectroscopy titrations have been used to investigate the formation of complexes between cations and neutral H-bond acceptors in organic solvents. Complexes formed by two different H-bond acceptors with fifteen different cations were studied in acetone and in acetonitrile. The effects of water and ion pairing with the counter-anion were found to be negligible in the two polar solvents employed for this study. The data were used to determine self-consistent H-bond donor parameters (a) for a series of organic and inorganic cations; guanidinium, primary, tertiary and quaternary ammonium, imidazolium, methylpyridinium, lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and caesium. The results demonstrate the transferability of a parameters for cations between different solvents and different H-bond acceptor partners, allowing reliable prediction of cation recognition properties in different environments. Lithium and protonated nitrogen cations form the most stable complexes, but the a parameter is only 5.0, which is similar to the neutral H-bond donor 3-trifluoromethyl, 4-nitrophenol (a 1/4 5.1). Quaternary ammonium is the weakest H-bond donor investigated with an a value of 2.7, which is comparable to an alcohol. The a parameters for alkali metal cations decrease down the group from 5.0 (Li+) to 3.5 (Cs+).
