Background and Aims Flowers emit a wide range of volatile compounds which can be critically important to interactions with pollinators or herbivores. Yet most studies of how the environment influences plant volatiles focus on leaf emissions, with little known about abiotic sources of variation in floral volatiles. Understanding phenotypic plasticity in floral volatile emissions has become increasingly important with globally increasing temperatures and changes in drought frequency and severity. Here quantitative relationships of floral volatile emissions to soil water content were analysed. Methods Plants of the sub-alpine herb Ipomopsis aggregata and hybrids with its closest congener were subjected to a progressive dry down, mimicking the range of soil moistures experienced in the field. Floral volatiles and leaf gas exchange were measured at four time points during the drought. Key Results As the soil dried, floral volatile emissions increased overall and changed in composition, from more 1,3-octadiene and benzyl alcohol to higher representation of some terpenes. Emissions of individual compounds were not linearly related to volumetric water content in the soil. The dominant compound, the monoterpene -pinene, made up the highest percentage of the scent mixture when soil moisture was intermediate. In contrast, emission of the sesquiterpene (E,E)–farnesene accelerated as the drought became more intense. Changes in floral volatiles did not track the time course of changes in photosynthetic rate or stomatal conductance. Conclusions This study shows responses of specific floral volatile organic compounds to soil moisture. The non-linear responses furthermore suggest that extreme droughts may have impacts that are not predictable from milder droughts. Floral volatiles are likely to change seasonally with early summer droughts in the Rocky Mountains, as well as over years as snowmelt becomes progressively earlier. Changes in water availability may have impacts on plant-animal interactions that are mediated through non-linear changes in floral volatiles.

Grignard-type additions were readily achieved under the mediation of CuI (10 mol%) and samarium (2 equiv.) by employing various organohalides, e.g. benzyl, aryl, heterocyclic and aliphatic halides (Cl, Br or I), and diverse carbonyl compounds (e.g. carbonic esters, carboxylic esters, acid anhydrides, acyl chlorides, ketones, aldehydes, propylene epoxides and formamides) to afford alcohols, ketones and aldehydes, respectively, with high efficiency and chemoselectivity, in which the organosamarium intermediate might be involved.

The influence of hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) in the structure, dynamics, and functionality of biological and artificial complex systems is the subject of intense investigation. In this broad context, particular attention has recently been focused on the ultrafast H-bond dependent dynamical properties in the electronic excited state because of their potentially dramatic consequences on the mechanism, dynamics, and efficiency of photochemical reactions and photophysical processes of crucial importance for life and technology. Excited-state H-bond dynamics generally occur on ultrafast time scales of hundreds of femtoseconds or less, making the characterization of associated mechanisms particularly challenging with conventional time-resolved techniques. Here, 2D electronic spectroscopy is exploited to shed light on this still largely unexplored dynamic mechanism. An H-bonded molecular dimer prepared by self-assembly of two boron-dipyrromethene dyes has been specifically designed and synthesized for this aim. The obtained results confirm that upon formation of H-bonds and the dimer, a new ultrafast relaxation channel is activated in the ultrafast dynamics, mediated by the vibrational motions of the hydrogen donor and acceptor groups. This relaxation channel also involves, beyond intra-molecular relaxations, an inter-molecular transfer process. This is particularly significant considering the long distance between the centers of mass of the two molecules. These findings suggest that the design of H-bonded structures is a particularly powerful tool to drive the ultrafast dynamics in complex materials.

The effect of bio-imprinting and water activity on catalytic activities and the thermostability of lipases was investigated for transesterification using vinyl acetate and benzyl alcohol as substrates in ionic liquid, [C(n)mim][PF6] (n=4,6,8), and benzene. The catalytic activities were enhanced by imprinting in benzene and [C(4)mim][PF6], and the relations between the transesterification activities and the water activity in both solvents were approximately bell shaped. The reactivity of the transesterification in benzene was higher than that in [C(4)mim][PF6]. The effects of water activity and imprinting on the kinetic parameters in [C(4)mim][PF6] were examined. Without controlling the water content, the values of K-m,K-VA and K-m,K-BA (Michaelis constants of vinyl acetate and benzyl alcohol, respectively) decreased, and the values of V-m (maximum rate) increased by imprinting. On the other hand, by controlling the water content in the organic media, the values of V-m, K-m,K-VA, and K-m,K-BA increased by imprinting. The activities of lipase in ionic liquid are more strongly affected by water activity and imprinting than those in benzene. We observed effects of water activity on thermostability but none from imprinting.

An efficient ruthenium-catalyzed tandem cyclization for the formation of C-N bond was developed by using hydrogen transfer reaction and intramolecular cyclization. This process relied on the efficient availability of nitroarenes and primary alcohols to form C-N bond by hydrogen transfer reaction. This method could be widely used in the synthesis of quinazolinone skeletons due to less waste, higher reaction efficiency and better functional groups tolerance. A series of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones derivatives were obtained with high production by using nitroarenes and primary alcohols as the substrates. Finally, based on the experimental results, a reasonable series reaction mechanism was proposed.

In the search for novel aromatase inhibitors, a series of triazole and imidazole-based carbamate derivatives were designed and synthesized. Final compounds were thus evaluated against human aromatase by in vitro kinetic experiments in a fluorimetric assay in comparison with letrozole. The effect of most active derivatives 13a and 15c was then evaluated in vitro on the human breast cancer cell line MCF7 by MTT assay, cytotoxicity assay (LDH release) and cell cycle analysis, revealing a dose-dependent inhibition profile of cell viability and low micromolar IC50 values. In addition, docking simulations were also carried out to elucidate at a molecular level of detail the binding modes adopted to target human aromatase. (C) 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS. In search of new active molecules against MCF-7, A549 and HepG2, tetrazole based pyrazoline and isoxazoline derivatives under both conventional and ultrasonic irradiation method were designed and efficiently synthesized. Structures of newly synthesized compounds 5a-h and 6a-h were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Several derivatives were found to be excellent cytotoxic against MCF-7, A549 and HepG2 cell lines characterized by lower IC50 values (0.78-3.12 mu g/mL). Compounds 5b and 5c demonstrated an antiproliferative effect comparable to that of CA-4. Western blot analysis revealed that, reported compounds accumulate more tubulin in the soluble fraction. Docking studies suggested that, binding of these compounds mimics at the colchicine site of tubulin. In vitro study revealed that the tetrazole based pyrazolines and isoxazolines may possess ideal structural requirements for further development of novel therapeutic agents.
