Deep eutectic solvents like ionic liquids were used as solvent or catalyst in organic synthesis. In this work, a novel deep eutectic solvent containing triethanolamine and sodium acetate was prepared and studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), potential of hydrogen (pH), viscosity and conductivity. This deep eutectic solvent was applied for the synthesis of tetrahydrodipyrazolopyridines as an efficient reusable catalyst under microwave irradiation. The advantages of this method include easy catalyst preparation, low catalyst consumption, short reaction time, excellent product yields and safe operation. Graphic abstract

In this study, Fe3O4-MnO2 magnetic composites were prepared and used as catalyst for the catalytic ozonation of BPA in aqueous solution. First, characterization results proved that Fe3O4-MnO2 magnetic composites were prepared successfully. Meanwhile, the advantage of Fe3O4-MnO2/O-3 system was demonstrated by control experiments. The degradation efficiency of BPA in Fe3O4-MnO2 process reached 97.0% under the conditions: Fe3O4-MnO2 = 100 mg/L, O-3 flow rate = 100 mL/min, initial solution pH = 7.0. In addition, the effects of catalyst dosage, O-3 flow rate and initial solution pH on the degradation of BPA were studied respectively. Moreover, the recyclability and stability of Fe3O4-MnO2 magnetic composites were also investigated. The results showed that Fe3O4-MnO2 magnetic composites have high catalytic activity, stability and recyclability for BPA degradation. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates of BPA were detected and the degradation pathways of BPA were proposed comprehensively. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism of Fe3O4-MnO2/O-3 process was proposed. In brief, all the results confirmed that the Fe3O4-MnO2/O-3 process was a simple, nonhazardous, efficient and promising technology for the degradation of BPA in aqueous solution.

Despite the development of targeted therapies in cancer, the problem of multidrug resistance (MDR) is still unsolved. Most patients with metastatic cancer die from MDR. Transmembrane efflux pumps as the main cause of MDR have been addressed by developed inhibitors, but early inhibitors of the most prominent and longest known efflux pump P-glycoprotein (P-gp) were disappointing. Those inhibitors have been used without knowledge about the expression of P-gp by the treated tumor. Therefore the use of inhibitors of transmembrane efflux pumps in clinical settings is reconsidered as a promising strategy in the case of the respective efflux pump expression. We discovered novel symmetric inhibitors of the symmetric efflux pump MRP4 encoded by the ABCC4 gene. MRP4 is involved in many kinds of cancer with resistance to anticancer drugs. All compounds showed better activities than the best known MRP4 inhibitor MK571 in an MRP4-overexpressing cell line assay, and the activities could be related to the various substitution patterns of aromatic residues within the symmetric molecular framework. One of the best compounds was demonstrated to overcome the MRP4-mediated resistance in the cell line model to restore the anticancer drug sensitivity as a proof of concept.

Methods to activate the relatively stable ether C-O bonds and convert them to other functional groups are desirable. One-electron reduction of ethers is a potentially promising route to cleave the C-O bond. However, owing to the highly negative redox potential of alkyl aryl ethers (E-red < -2.6 V vs SCE), this mode of ether C-O bond activation is challenging. Herein, we report the visible-light-induced photocatalytic cleavage of the alkyl aryl ether C-O bond using a carbazole-based organic photocatalyst (PC). Both benzylic and non-benzylic aryl ethers underwent C-O bond cleavage to form the corresponding phenol products. Addition of Cs2CO3 was beneficial, especially in reactions using a N-H carbazole PC. The reaction was proposed to occur via single-electron transfer (SET) from the excited-state carbazole to the substrate ether. Interaction of the N-H carbazole PC with Cs2CO3 via hydrogen bonding exists, which enables a deprotonation-assisted electron-transfer mechanism to operate. In addition, the Lewis acidic Cs cation interacts with the substrate alkyl aryl ether to activate it as an electron acceptor. Characterization of volatile off-odor compounds in thermal duck egg gels was investigated by gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS), odor activity values (OAVs) and aroma recombination. The results demonstrated that the off-odor of thermal duck egg mainly came from egg yolk (EY), and content of aldehydes was the highest in EY. Anaerobic treatment in nitrogen contributed to decreased off-odor sensory scores and volatile components of the heated egg gels. Aerobic EY gels (treated in air) were determined to contain eight volatile compounds with OAVs greater than 1, such as hexanal, nonanal, benzaldehyde, (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-nonenal, (E, E)-2,4-decadienal, 1-octen-3-ol and 2-pentylfuran. However, three key volatile components (nonanal, benzaldehyde and (E)-2-nonenal) with OAVs greater than 1 were found in anaerobic EY gels. Moreover, on the basis of results of recombination and omission experiments, hexanal, (E)-2-octenal, (E, E)2,4-decadienal, 1-octen-3-ol and 2-pentylfuran were identified as key off-odor components in thermal EY gels. Sensory evaluation of the recombination model with five aroma compounds scored 4.38 out of 5 points. The major aroma profile of the off-flavor from egg EY gels included strong fatty, nutty, and mushroom aromas.

First, we note in this paper that alpha-Hydroxyphosphonate acid ester was synthesized before; we confirmed it by a new method and its various properties are discussed experimentally and theoretically. The structure of Diethyl [hydroxy(4-methoxyphenyl) methyl] phosphonate (DH4MPMP) resolved by SXRD is compared to the optimized geometry, the FT-IR, NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopies results were compared and discussed experimentally and theoretically. The Hirshfeld surface analyses were employed to determine qualitative and quantitative intermolecular interactions present in the solid state and through, the supramolecular 3D-network was discussed. The UV-Vis spectrum exhibit a strong absorption in middle UV domain and an optical transmittance in the visible one. To be close from the experimental results, all DFT calculations based on B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) were detailed on monomer and dimer models. The DFT calculation of the second-order nonlinear optical properties is based on the first static hyperpolarizability (beta), the results show that the material might have nonlinear optical properties. The calculated frontier molecular orbitals and their energies were calculated. The research was extended to the calculations of the molecular electrostatic potential map; it shows negative potential areas localized around oxygen atoms as well as the positive localized around the hydrogen atoms. Finally, the thermodynamic functions (entropy, heat capacity and enthalpy) were determined from spectroscopic data by statistical methods in the range 100-1000 K and the experimental thermal decomposition behavior was analyzed by TGA. The palladium-catalyzed benzylic-like nucleophilic substitution of benzofuran-2-ylmethyl acetate with N, S, O and C soft nucleophiles has been investigated. The success of the reaction is dramatically influenced by the choice of catalytic system: with nitrogen based nucleophiles the reaction works well with Pd-2(dba)(3)/dppf, while with sulfur, oxygen and carbo-nucleophiles [Pd(eta(3)-C3H5)Cl](2)/XPhos is more efficient. The regiochemical outcome shows that the nucleophilic substitution occurs only on the benzylic position of the eta(3)-(benzofuryl)methyl complex. The high to excellent yields and the simplicity of the experimental procedure make this protocol a versatile synthetic tool for the preparation of 2-substituted benzo[b]furans.

In this project, nano-MnO2@zeolite-Y (NMOZ) was successfully prepared via hydrothermal technique and its structure was confirmed using FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX and BET analyses. MnO2 nanoparticles stabilized on zeolite-NaY were used as nanocatalyst for efficient solventless preparation of 3,4-disubstituted isoxazole-5(4H)-one scaffolds via one-pot three-component reaction of ethyl acetoacetate, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and aromatic aldehydes at 100 degrees C. One of the advantages of this new method is the non-use of a metal oxidant such as KMnO4 (greener method) and the stabilization of MnO2 to the zeolite-Y surface via ion bonding. This causes the MnO2 not be leached from the zeolite during the processes of nanocatalyst recycling in organic reactions. This simple approach also has promising features as like as safe, inexpensive and recyclable nanocatalyst, solvent-free reaction, short reaction times, high to excellent yields, and easy isolation of the products.

Before biobased fuels can replace fossil fuels, several key issues must be addressed. Bio-oils derived through pyrolysis of lignocellulosic material have high acidity and viscosity, and poor energy density and stability. To address these issues, this paper examines the individual and combined behavior of lignocellulosic feedstock components to shed light on the potential to generate preferential biofuel properties through biomass mixing. Dry lignocellulosic biomass is mostly composed of cell wall polysaccharides (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin), which vary widely in type and concentration across biomasses. This heterogeneity leads to increased unpredictability in biobased fuel formation during pyrolysis. Using derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy, and residual gas analysis, this work explores the synergistic interactions of lignocellulosic biomass components during pyrolysis to manipulate bio-oil and gas product composition based on desired compound classes. Cellulose, xylose, xylan, and lignin were blended at different ratios to determine the extent of synergistic effects during pyrolysis. For each mixture, an ‘expected’ outcome was developed by summing the individual behavior (e.g. mass loss rate, H-2 gas evolution, etc.) of the individual components based on mass fraction present. Mixtures containing lignin and/or xylan yield peak DTG mass loss rates at lower temperatures than predicted with corresponding reductions in biochar yield suggesting synergistic interactions that promote devolatilization. By itself, lignin produces large amounts of hydrogen gas, and when mixed with other biomasses promotes dehydrogenation. Lignin increases CO2 formation, resulting in lower oxygen concentrations in the bio-oil and biochar. While suppressing bio-oil generation, the presence of lignin – even at low concentrations – increases the number of phenol compounds produced, while decreasing the yield of furans. The synergistic interactions between different polysaccharides could be exploited depending on the desired biorefinery products – allowing for targeted selection of lignocellulosic biomass mixes to fine-tune resulting fuels.
