Herein we report a straightforward synthetic approach to 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles from readily available primary alcohols using arene diruthenium(II) catalysts. Dinuclear arene ruthenium complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized with the aid of analytical and spectral techniques. A library of 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles was achieved with a yield up to 95% by loading 0.25 mol% of the catalyst. The present protocol is environmentally benign, which is performed under aerobic conditions and liberates water as the sole by-product.

Starting from commonly available (E/Z)-mixtures of alkenyl bromides, (E)-configured vinyl arenes or dienes are formed exclusively. Mechanistic studies show that this selectivity is achieved because the (E)configured alkenyl bromides undergo a smooth coupling, whereas the (Z)-isomers are rapidly eliminated with the formation of alkynes.

A novel chiral nucleophilic organocatalyst easily synthesized from simple starting materials bearing a 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine skeleton has been developed and successfully applied in the direct enantioselective C-acylation of 3-substituted benzofuranones. Its catalytic efficiency was shown to be comparable to that of the previously reported chiral 6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]imidazole catalyst. A wide range of 3,3-disubstituted benzofuranones, possessing a quaternary stereocenter, were synthesized with high yields and enantioselectivities.

In this study, the sinocalamus oldhami alkali lignin was depolymerized into phenolic products in a combined system by using the composite alkali and Ni-W2C/activated carbon (AC) as catalysts. FT-IR, GPC, TG, 2D-HSQC and GC-MS were used to analyze the composition, structure and distribution of degradation products, and the synergistic effect of metal and alkali catalysts on the depolymerization of lignin was also studied. The results showed that Ni-W2C/AC and composite alkali could effectively improve the catalytic degradation efficiency of lignin under mild conditions, 94.4% of lignin was converted and 17.18% of phenolic monomers were obtained under 260 degrees C for 5 h. In this composite system, the synergism of the basic sites, the metal active sites and the Lewis acid sites could promote the cleavage of C-O bonds in the lignin molecule and lower the char formation during the base-catalyzed solvolysis. Phenolic monomers were mainly composed of phenol, 2-methyl-phenol and p-cresol etc.

The paper presents an innovative, chemically modified (methylcyanated) asphaltene-based adsorbent that can be an interesting low-cost alternative for traditional adsorbents. Adsorption properties of adsorbents were examined by inverse gas chromatography technique, adsorption isotherms, and breakthrough curves. A significant increase in retention volume for pyridine, 2-pentanone, nitropropane, toluene, and 1-butanol was observed. Rohrschneider-McReynolds constants revealed an increase in strength of interactions as a result of the modification, especially in strong proton-acceptor interaction (by a factor of 4.6). The surface-free energy of asphaltene adsorbents increased from 136.71 to 169.95 mJ m(-2) after modification. It is similar to the surface-free energy of silica or alumina. Moreover, modified adsorbent shows very high adsorption potential for pyridine. Adsorption isotherms revealed that monolayer adsorption capacity for pyridine increased 1.5 times after modification. Breakthrough curves of pyridine indicate that chemical modification increased the adsorption capacity, removal efficiency, and throughput. Scale-up calculations revealed that adsorption column packed with modified asphaltene adsorbent would be almost two times smaller compared to a column packed with unmodified one. Graphic abstract

The developed methodology rendered the use of carboxylic acids as a direct surrogate of primary amines, for the synthesis of primary ureas, secondary/tertiary ureas, O/S-carbamates, benzoyl ureas, amides, and N-formyls, exploiting the Curtius reaction. This approach has a potential to provide a diversified library of N-containing compounds, starting from a single carboxylic acid, based on the selection of the nucleophile.

The synthesis of four novel non-symmetric Ni(ii)-POCOP pincer complexes meta-functionalized with either benzothiazole or benzimidazole at the central aryl ring is described. All complexes were fully characterised in solution by various analytical techniques and the molecular structures in the solid state of complexes 1b, 2a and 2b were unequivocally determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, the Ni(ii)-POCOP pincer complexes were efficiently used as catalysts in the synthesis of diarylketones by cross-coupling reactions of functionalized benzaldehydes and boronic acid derivatives under relatively mild conditions. An important aspect of this transformation is the dependence on the steric properties of the donor groups (OPR2) of the pincer ligands, the more active compounds having the phosphinitos bearing isopropyl groups (1a and 2a) than those containing tert-butyl substituents (1b and 2b).

Ketones are of great importance in synthesis, biology, and pharmaceuticals. This paper reports an iridium complexes-catalyzed cross-coupling of alcohols via hydrogen borrowing, affording a series of alpha-alkylated ketones in high yield (86 %-95 %) and chemoselectivities (>99 : 1). This methodology has the advantages of low catalyst loading (0.1 mol%) and environmentally benign water as the solvent. Studies have shown the amount of base has a great impact on chemoselectivities. Meanwhile, deuteration experiments show water plays an important role in accelerating the reduction of the unsaturated ketones intermediates. Remarkably, a gram-scale experiment demonstrates this methodology of iridium-catalyzed cross-coupling of alcohols has potential application in the practical synthesis of alpha-alkylated ketones.
