A series of hybrids 10a-v based on coumarin/pyrazole oxime have been synthesized, and exhibit good to excellent antitumor activities. Compound 10n has shown remarkable anticancer effect on SMMC-7721 cells (IC50 = 2.08 mu M), which is considerably lower than 5-FU (IC50 = 37.8 mu M) and similar to ADM (IC50 = 2.67 mu M), with little effect on normal hepatic cells LO2. Notably, the suppression experiments of metastatic activities reveal that 10n also displays significant anti-metastasis effects through inhibiting cell migration and invasion in highly metastatic SMMC-7721 cell line, and dose-dependently reverses TGF-beta 1-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) procedure better than ADM. Finally, 10n also possesses low acute toxicity and potent tumor growth inhibitory property against SMMC-7721 cell lines in vivo. Benzyl alcohol oxidation by one-and two-electron oxidized copper(II)-salen complexes with the para-substituted phenolate moieties, [Cu(R-salen)](n+) (H2R-salen = N,N’-bis(3-tert-butyl-5-R-salicylidene)ethylenediamine; R = methoxy (MeO), methylthio (MeS) groups; n = 1, 2) was kinetically investigated under the conditions with large excess of the substrate in comparison to the copper complex concentration (C-BnOH >> C-Cu). Kinetic analyses for benzyl alcohol oxidation by the one-electron oxidized complexes [Cu(R-salen)](+) revealed significantly different kinetics depending on R-groups: one-step pseudo second-order kinetics was assigned for R = MeO, while two-step pseudo first-order kinetics was suitable for R = MeS. The reaction kinetics by two-electron oxidized complexes [Cu(R-salen)](2+) were assigned to two-and three-step first-order processes for R = MeO and MeS, respectively, in which the first step consists of parallel pathways of complex : substrate = 1:1 and 1:2 reactions to generate the one-electron oxidized complex intermediates irrespective of the R-group. However, the following steps were different depending on R-groups. Associating with the results of kinetic isotope effect (KIE) measurements, the reaction mechanisms were discussed and proposed.

Poly[epsilon-CL-b-(MMA-comb-EMA)]comb-type polymers were synthesized by ATRP and epsilon-caprolactone macroinitiator and macromonomer. Methyl methacrylate macromonomer was synthesized from acylation reaction of methacryloyl chloride with PMMA ended 7-hydroxy coumarin. The macroinitiator was prepared from the reaction of chlorine acetyl chloride P(epsilon-CL). The synthesized polymers were characterized by FT-IR, H-1-NMR and C-13-NMR techniques. The average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymers were measured by GPC method. Thermal properties of samples were studied by DSC/TGA techniques. Dielectric and Ac conductivity measurements were performed. Dielectric constant (epsilon’), dielectric loss factor (epsilon|) and conductivity behaviors of comb-type polymer were measured at room temperature between the frequency of 100-2000 Hz and over the temperature range 303-413 K at 1 kHz reported as compared with each other. Besides, their effects on the electrical properties by doping with EuCl3 for some of the comb copolymers were and were investigated. The activation energy (E-a) was calculated from conductivity. We reported it was determined that the (epsilon’) and (epsilon|) values decreased with increasing frequency. There are also many application areas for comb polymers for example; nanotechnology, medicine. The aim of this study is to synthesize comb-type copolymers in different compositions and to investigate their electrical properties.

Herein we describe the synthesis of five new 2-aryl and 2-alkylimidazolone derivatives via an effective one-pot synthetic strategy assisted by microwave irradiations which allowed us to access the desired product in a reduced time reaction compared to the thermal heating and a slightly better yield (48% compared to 45%). The new imidazolone derivatives were evaluated for their anticancer activity in vitro against MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and HepG2 cell lines. The results showed good cytotoxic effects for some of these derivatives on both MCF-7 and HepG2 cell lines in the range of 5.7-11.3 mu M. Among the synthesized derivatives, 2ab and 2b showed the strongest activity with IC50 values of 7 and 5.7 mu M (MCF-7) and 6.2 and 8.6 mu M (HepG2), respectively. The cytotoxic activities of these derivatives were moderate compared to those of doxorubicin. However, this product showed higher toxicity in vivo on the development of zebrafish embryos than the synthesized imidazolones. These derivatives at high concentrations exhibited some morphological abnormalities on the embryos.

Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) are the least studied allotropes of carbon despite their discovery before nanotubes and fullerenes. CNOs are multilayered fullerenes concentrically arranged one inside the other resembling the structure of an onion. Typically, their size average ranges from 2 to 50 nm in diameter. Recently, CNOs have gained attention in different fields because of their interesting chemical and physical properties. However, their lack of dispersibility in common solvents due to strong intermolecular interactions limits their applications. Here, we studied the dispersion behavior of CNOs prepared by nanodiamond annealing in 20 solvents of different polarities. Dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the dispersion of CNOs in the different solvents. The solvents were classified as good or bad solvents to determine the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) of the CNOs using various optimization approaches. The calculated HSPs (delta(D), delta(p) and delta(H)) were further used to predict the CNO dispersion behavior in other solvents with a very good agreement between expected and observed dispersibilities. Our results will be helpful to estimate the behavior of CNOs in other solvents or their interaction with other materials with known HSPs. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the synthesis of magnetic cored amino group terminated dendrimer (Fe3O4@SiO2@PAMAM-G(2)) through covalent bonding was described. The Lake Tian E Zhou (TEZ, an oxbow lake) was formed during the rerouting of the Changjiang River in 1972, with strong influences from the main river channel and flood events. Herein, a sediment core was collected from the Lake TEZ for the measurements of carbon isotopes and biomarkers, including stable carbon isotopes (delta C-13), radiocarbon composition (Delta C-14), and lignin phenols, as well as lead-210 to reconstruct recent heavy flood events over the past 70 years. At the 24-26 cm interval, the sediment contained the highest OC%, TN%, and lignin phenols content, as well as significantly depleted C-13 but enriched C-14, corresponding to the extreme flood event in 1998. In addition, statistics from t-test showed that lignin phenols normalized to OC (?8), the concentration of 3, 5-dihydroxy benzoic acid (3, 5-BD), and the ratio of p-hydroxy benzophenone to total hydroxyl phenols (PHB/HP) were all significantly different between the layers containing flood deposits and the layers deposited under normal non-flood conditions (p<0.05). These results indicate that the later three parameters are highly related to flood events and can be used as compelling proxies, along with sediment chronology, for hydrological changes and storm/flood events in the river basin and coastal marine environments. Owing to the rapid rise in antibiotic resistance, infectious diseases have become serious threat to public health. There is an urgent need to develop new antimicrobial agents with diverse chemical structures and novel mechanisms of action to overcome the resistance. In recent years, Quinazoline-benzimidazole hybrids have emerged as a new class of antimicrobial agents active against S. aureus and M. tuberculosis. In the current study, we designed and synthesized fifteen new Quinazoline-benzimidazole hybrids and evaluated them for their antimicrobial activity against S. aureus ATCC 29213 and M. tuberculosis H37Rv. These studies led to the identification of nine potent antibacterial agents 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8f, 8g, 8h, 8i and 10c with MICs in the range of 4-64 mu g/mL. Further, these selected compounds were found to possess potent antibacterial potential against a panel of drug-resistant clinical isolates which include methicillin and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus. The selected compounds were found to be less toxic to Vero cells (CC50 = 40->= 200 mu g/mL) and demonstrated a favourable selectivity index. Based on the encouraging results obtained these new benzimidazol-2-yl quinazoline derivatives have emerged as promising antimicrobial agents for the treatment of MDR-S. aureus and Mycobacterial infections.
