An efficient Cu(II)-catalyzed radical addition of maleimides has been achieved. The identified copper catalyst enables the formation of oxime radicals (N-O-center dot) by cleaving the O-H bond in ketoximes, followed by the radical addition to N-substituted maleimides. The oxime radicals (N-O-center dot) were detected and confirmed by EPR spectroscopy and variable-temperature H-1 NMR. The simple one-pot reaction realizes the facile preparation of a variety of oxime ether adduct products in moderate to good yields. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aurone-derived azadienes are well-known four-atom synthons for direct [4 + n] cycloadditions owing to their s-cis conformation as well as the thermodynamically favored aromatization nature of these processes. However, distinct from this common reactivity, herein we report an unusual formal migrative annulation with siloxy alkynes initiated by [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Unexpectedly, this process generates benzofuran-fused nitrogen heterocyclic products with formal substituent migration. This observation is rationalized by less common [2 + 2] cycloaddition followed by 4 pi and 6 pi electrocyclic events. DFT calculations provided support to the proposed mechanism.

Cocoa fermentation is an essential step for chocolate production whereby flavor potential is generated and bitterness and astringency are moderated. To facilitate fermentation research in laboratories geographically distant from cocoa-growing regions, and to simplify and control the fermentation system, a laboratory fermentation model system was developed. The model system consisted of dried unfermented beans, artificial pulp medium, and laboratory incubator to control temperature and aeration. The model system developed in this study showed a succession of key microorganisms including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus fermentum, Acetobacter pasteurianus, and Acetobacter tropicalis. The pH of cocoa beans decreased to an acceptable final pH (4.8). Sugars were well consumed and acetic acid and ethanol were produced during fermentation. Desirable volatile compounds including phenylethyl alcohol, acetoin, 2-phenylethyl acetate, and 3-methylbutyl acetate increased in the cocoa beans during fermentation. In addition, the concentration of polyphenols decreased with fermentation. These results lead to the conclusion that the model system developed in this study was able to simulate the microbial and chemical changes occurring in in situ cocoa fermentation. This laboratory-scale model system will enable systematic examination of the effects of process parameters on fermented bean quality.

A novel method was used to prepare a magnetic phenylene-based periodic mesoporous organosilica nanocomposite with yolk-shell structure (Fe3O4@YSPMO). The Fe3O4@YSPMO nanomaterial was prepared by using easily accessible pluronic-P123 and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactants under basic conditions. This material was employed for effective immobilization of potassium perruthenate to prepare an Fe3O4@YSPMO@Ru nanocatalyst for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols. Isomerization-based strategies to enable the stereodivergent construction of complex polyenes from geometrically defined alkene linchpins remain conspicuously underdeveloped. Some new fluoro-heterocyclic compounds containing thiazole and pyridine moities have been synthesized and studied for their antiproliferative activity. Thiazole derivatives have been synthesized by the reaction of alpha-halo carbonyl compounds with thiosemicarbazones. Some pyridine derivatives have been synthesized by the reaction of chalcone with cyanothioacetamide and/or malononitrile. Spectroscopic methods have been used for elucidating molecular structures of the products. Cytotoxic activity of several derivatives has been tested against human breast cancer (MCF-7), human colon cancer (HCT-116) and human liver cancer (Hep-G2) by the SRB method. Most of compounds exhibit mild effect on the tested cell lines. One of thiazolidin-4-one derivatives has been characterized by moderate to strong effect on MCF-7 cell line.

BackgroundLaminitis is a common and serve disease which caused by inflammation and pathological changes of the laminar junction. However, the pathologic mechanism remains unclear. In this study we aimed to investigate changes of the gut microbiota and metabolomics in oligofructose-induced laminitis of horses.ResultsAnimals submitted to treatment with oligofructose had lower fecal pH but higher lactic acid, histamine, and Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in serum. Meanwhile, oligofructose altered composition of the hindgut bacterial community, demonstrated by increasing relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Megasphaera. In addition, the metabolome analysis revealed that treatment with oligofructose decreased 84 metabolites while 53 metabolites increased, such as dihydrothymine, N3,N4-Dimethyl-L-arginine, 10E,12Z-Octadecadienoic acid, and asparagine. Pathway analysis revealed that aldosterone synthesis and secretion, regulation of lipolysis in adipocytes, steroid hormone biosynthesis, pyrimidine metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, and galactose metabolism were significantly different between healthy and laminitis horses. Furthermore, correlation analysis between gut microbiota and metabolites indicated that Lactobacillus and/or Megasphaera were positively associated with the dihydrothymine, N3,N4-Dimethyl-L-arginine, 10E,12Z-Octadecadienoic acid, and asparagine.ConclusionsThese results revealed that disturbance of gut microbiota and changes of metabolites were occurred during the development of equine laminitis, and these results may provide novel insights to detect biomarkers for a better understanding of the potential mechanism and prevention strategies for laminitis in horses.

Citronellol is one of the most widely used fragrances for bouquetting purposes and it is a starting material for synthesis of several other terpenoids. Nevertheless, few data have been reported on citronellol selective oxidation. Accordingly, we report our findings on the selective oxidation of citronellol with hydrogen peroxide using a set of titanosilicate catalysts with different morphologies and textural properties-conventional titanium silicalite 1 (TS-1), mesoporous TS-1, layered TS-1 and silica-titania pillared TS-1 and also studying the effect of the solvent used. Epoxidation of C6=C7 double bond was the main primary reaction in this system and trace signals of C5 allylic oxidation products were observed without formation of citronellal. Due to the presence of post-synthesis introduced additional Ti sites, the silica-titania pillared TS-1 (TS-1-PITi) provided the highest conversion among the tested catalysts; nevertheless, citronellol was oxidized over all the studied catalysts including conventional TS-1; therefore, showing that it penetrates even into MFI micropores (0.55 nm in diameter). When using acetonitrile as a solvent, the conversion was proportional to the titanium content of the catalyst. When studying the effect of the solvent, acetonitrile provided the highest epoxide selectivity (55%) while in methanol, 2-propanol and 1,4-dioxane, ring opening reactions caused epoxide decomposition.
