We have prepared, by a sol-immobilization method, bimetallic catalysts with different Au:Pt atomic ratios supported on commercial SrCO3. The catalytic performance for the oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol of such materials was compared to the monometallic counterparts. aiming at the obtaining of the best composition of the material. It was found that the Au:Pt atomic ratio presents a remarkable effect on the system performance, i.e., Pt-rich systems arc more selective; however, less active. Thus, an equilibrium related to the activity and selectivity of the system was obtained by considering the yield of the system. Also, some density functional theory (DFT) insights were obtained by using a cluster of 14 atoms of Au and 1 or 2 atoms of Pt. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental mapping in scanning transmission electron microscopy before and after catalyst usage, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, Rietveld refinement, among other techniques, were used and associated to the experimental data, which allowed us to propose a catalytic mechanism for the system, which was important since SiCO3 has not been considered before as catalyst support for alcohol oxidation reactions.

Several flexible and rigid analogs of 4H-1,2,4-triazoles (compounds 8a-g and 9a-g) bearing trimethoxyphenyl pharmacophoric unit, were designed and synthesized as potential anticancer agents. The in vitro cytotoxic assay indicated that both flexible and rigid analogs (8 and 9, respectively) can potentially inhibit the growth of cancerous cells (A549, MCF7, and SKOV3), with IC50 values less than 5.0 mu M. Furthermore, compounds 10a-l as regional isomers of compounds 9 exhibited remarkable cytotoxic activity with IC50 values ranging from 0.30 to 5.0 mu M. The rigid analogs 9a, 10h and 10k were significantly more potent than etoposide against MCF7, SKOV3 and A549 cells, respectively. These compounds showed high selectivity towards cancer cells over normal cells, as they had no significant cytotoxicity against L929 cells. In addition, the representative compounds 9a and 10h could inhibit the tubulin polymerization at micro-molar levels. By determining changes in the colchicine-tubulin fluorescence, it was suggested that compound 10h could bind to the tubulin at the colchicine pocket. The molecular docking study further confirmed the inhibitory activity of promising compounds 9a, 10h and 10k on tubulin polymerization through binding to the colchicine-binding site.

The enzymatic family of heme oxygenase (HO) is accountable for heme breakdown. Among the two isoforms characterized to date, HO-2 is poorly investigated due to the lack of potent HO-2 chemical modulators and the greater attentiveness towards HO-1 isoform. In the present paper, we report the rational design and synthesis of HO-2 inhibitors achieved by modulating the volume of known HO-1 inhibitors. The inhibition preference has been moved from HO-1 to HO-2 by merely increasing the volume of the substituent in the western region of the inhibitors. Docking studies demonstrated that new derivatives soak differently in the two binding pockets, probably due to the presence of a Tyr187 residue in HO-2. These findings could be useful for the design of new selective HO-2 compounds.

For compound 1, six motifs (molecule pairs) and for compound 2, with two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit, thirteen motifs are identified by the PIXEL calculations to have energies, -E-tot, above the cut-offvalue of 10 kJ.mol(-1). We recently identified unique caterpillar-induced plant volatile compounds emitted from apple leaves infested with the larvae of various leafroller species. In subsequent field tests, binary blends of phenylacetonitrile + acetic acid and 2-phenylethanol +acetic acid were found to be attractive to a range of tortricid leafroller species (Tortricidae: Tortricinae) in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. In this work, the caterpillar-induced plant volatiles from the apple-leafroller system were tested in two vineyards in Spain and Hungary for their attractiveness to the grape frugivore Lobesia botrana (Tortricidae: Olethreutinae). As seen for Tortricinae species, a binary blend of phenylacetonitrile +acetic acid attracted significantly more male and female L. botrana to traps than acetic acid or blank lures. Traps baited with other caterpillar-induced plant volatile compounds (benzyl alcohol, 2-phenylethanol, indole, and (E)-nerolidol, each as a binary blend with acetic acid) did not catch significantly more moths than traps containing acetic acid alone. The catches of male and female moths support an optimistic future for new products in female tortricid surveillance and control that are based on combinations of kairomone compounds released from larval-damaged foliage.

This report describes the development and optimization of the one-pot method for the synthesis of N-protected 1-aminoalkylphosphonium salts based on the three-component coupling of aldehydes and either amides, carbamates, lactams, imides, or urea in the presence of triarylphosphonium salts. The proposed strategy is very efficient and easy to carry out even on a larger scale (20 g) in any typical laboratory. Most reactions occur at temperatures between 50 and 100 degrees C in a short time (1-2 h) without requiring any catalyst, and simple workup procedures afford good to excellent yields. The exceptions are condensations with imides, which require much higher temperatures (150-170 degrees C) and longer reaction times (even 30 h). The possibility of carrying out the synthesis under solvent-free conditions (neat reactions) is also demonstrated. It is especially important for less reactive substrates (imides), and reactions required high temperature (or generally harsher conditions). Finally, we prove the developed one-pot methodology can be successfully applied for the synthesis of structurally diverse N-protected 1-aminoalkylphosphonium salts. Mechanistic studies showed the intermediate products of described couplings are 1-hydroxyalkylphosphonium salts, not N-hydroxyalkylamides, -imides, etc., as initially expected.

The synthesis of 1-halonaphthalenes by the Cu-catalyzed benzannulation reaction of 2-(phenylethynyl) benzaldehyde and alkynes in the presence of the halogen reagents such as NBS, NCS, and NIS, was developed. Purpose To investigate the association between vision and hearing impairment and falls in community-dwelling adults aged >= 50 years. Methods This is a prospective study on 50,986 participants assessed in Waves 6 and 7 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe. At baseline, we recorded socio-demographic data, clinical factors and self-reported vision and hearing impairment. We classified participants as having good vision and hearing, impaired vision, impaired hearing or impaired vision and hearing. We recorded falls in the six months prior to the baseline and 2-year follow-up interviews. The cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between vision and hearing impairment categories and falls were analysed by binary logistic regression models; odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. All analyses were adjusted for socio-demographic and clinical factors. Results Mean age was 67.1 years (range 50-102). At baseline, participants with impaired vision, impaired hearing, and impaired vision and hearing had an increased falls risk (OR (95% CI)) of 1.34 (1.22-1.49), 1.34 (1.20-1.50) and 1.67 (1.50-1.87), respectively, compared to those with good vision and hearing (all p < 0.001). At follow-up, participants with impaired vision, without or with impaired hearing, had an increased falls risk of 1.19 (1.08-1.31) and 1.33 (1.20-1.49), respectively, compared to those with good vision and hearing (both p < 0.001); hearing impairment was longitudinally associated with falls in middle-aged women. Conclusion Vision impairment was cross-sectionally and longitudinally associated with an increased falls risk. This risk was highest in adults with dual sensory impairment. Key summary pointsAim To investigate the relationship between self-reported vision and hearing impairment and falls risk in community-dwelling adults aged >= 50 years in the cross-national Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Findings Self-reported vision impairment, versus no impairment, was cross-sectionally and longitudinally associated with an increased falls risk in adults, independent of age, sex, self-rated health, co-morbidities and medications. The risk was highest when vision and hearing impairment coincided. Message Simple questions on self-reported sensory impairment can be used to assess the risk of falls in adults.
