One-pot synthesis of imines from benzyl alcohols and anilines by heterogeneous catalysis in batch reactor has already been widely studied, but its high cost and low production efficiency limit its application in the fine chemicals industry. In this work, gamma-Al2O3 balls supported CeO2 catalyst (uip-gamma-Al2O3-CeO2) was prepared by a novel unsaturated-impregnation-precipitation method, and was employed as a catalyst for continuous solvent-free synthesis of imines in a fixed bed reactor. Under the optimal technological parameter of fixed bed reactor and reaction condition, uip-gamma-Al2O3-CeO2-500 degrees C obtained remarkable 97 % yield of imine. After 20 days’ continuous operation, the total isolated yield of imine and TONBA/CeO2 reached up to 81 % and 16838, respectively. Importantly, the catalyst could be reactivated in situ in the fixed reactor. Through detailed characterization, the extraordinary catalytic performance of uip-gamma-Al2O3-CeO2-500 degrees C can be attributed to the abundant acid sites of gamma-Al2O3 as well as the synergistic effect between CeO2 and gamma-Al2O3.

Sodium taurocholate cotransport polypeptide (NTCP) plays an important role in the development of hepatitis and acts as a switch to allow hepatitis virus to enter hepatic cells. As the entry receptor protein of hepatitis virus, NTCP is also an effective target for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. Herein, twenty-five benzamide analogues were synthesized based on the virtual screening design and their anti-proliferative activities against HepG2 cells were evaluated in vitro. Compound 35 was found to be promising, with an IC50 value of 2.8 mu M. The apoptosis induced by 35 was characterized by the regulation of markers, including an increase in Box, cleaved-caspase 3, and cleaved-PARP proteins, and a decrease in Bcl-2 protein. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation confirmed that compound 35 can bind tightly to NTCP. Western blot analysis also showed that NTCP was inhibited. Altogether, these results indicate that compound 35 acts as a novel NTCP inhibitor to induce apoptosis in HepG2 cells.

To understand the self-inclusion and the dissociation in a branched beta-cyclodextrin (CD) system, we designed and synthesized a beta-CD trimer in which each CD group is connected to one of bridging arms of a planar triphenylbenzene core through a CuAAC click reaction. Only one rather than two or all of the three host CDs was demonstrated to be in a self-including state in water, while no self-inclusion was observed to occur in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) via the characterization of H-1 and NOESY NMR spectra. The configuration structures of the CD groups in the self-included state were evaluated, and the dissociation to free state in water was investigated under various conditions like heating, increased acidity, and discharging versus the addition of competitive guests. While raised temperature and increased acidity did not break the self-inclusion, two adamantane guest molecules were found to show capability in driving the equilibrium to get back to free state against the self-inclusion. The inclusion process of the added guests was believed to involve in the dissociation of the self-inclusion and the occupation of the guests in CD cavity. The results of host-guest interaction study indicated that the stable combination of guests was favorable for blocking the structural overturning of glucose toward trapping the bridging group into the cavity.

Katritzky salts have emerged as effective alkyl radical sources upon metal- or photocatalysis. Guaiacol, one of the main components and a model compound of lignin-derived bio-oil, was transformed into phenol and methylated phenols over a series of supported iron catalysts under atmospheric pressure. CeO2 support was superior to other conventional supports in view of the activity of supported iron catalysts. The effect of iron loading amount on CeO2 supports showed a linear relationship with an iron loading amount up to 3 wt %, which corresponded to monolayer coverage, and then it was almost constant with a further increase of the iron content. The Fe/CeO2 catalyst with 3 wt % iron loading (Fe(3)/CeO2) had higher stability than the catalysts with higher iron loadings. The optimal Fe(3)/CeO2 catalyst showed a 56% phenol yield and an 87% sum yield of phenol and methylated phenols at 673 K under guaiacol/N-2/H-2 = 1/45/135 flow with W/F = 1.0 g.h.mol(total)(-1). The X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance UV-visible (DRUV-vis), Raman, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) characterizations confirmed that the FeOx species were finely dispersed on the Fe/CeO2 catalyst with <= 3 wt % iron, and higher iron loadings led to formation of Fe2O3 particles in calcined catalysts. Although other supported iron catalysts with 3 wt % iron loading also contained dispersed FeOx species, the reducibility of Fe/CeO2 was higher than that of other supported iron catalysts, which might be related to the higher activity. The XAS characterization of spent catalysts showed that the stable Fe(3)/CeO2 catalyst contained only Fe3+ and Fe2+ species during the reaction, while in the Fe(10)/CeO2 catalyst, the reduction of iron proceeded to a greater extent and Fe3C crystals grew during the reaction. The structure of this monolayer Fe(3)/CeO2 was further characterized by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Rather than a two-dimensional Fe oxide sheet, a structure composed of dispersed Fe4O6 clusters is suggested for monolayer coverage. In this research, in order to synthesize a series of ethyl 2-amino-4-benzoyl-5-oxo-5,6-dihydro-4H-pyrano[3,2-c]quinoline-3-carboxylates, a green and an efficient method is proposed through one-pot three-component reaction of substituted arylglyoxals, ethyl cyanoacetate, and 4-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-one in the presence of terapropylammonium bromide as a catalyst in good yields. All synthesized new substances were characterized by FTIR, H-1-NMR, and C-13-NMR spectral data and elemental analysis.
