Essential oils and ethanolic extracts of seeds of seven organically and conventionally grown accessions (E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, and E7) of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) were examined for their chemical constituents, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Accession E7 presented the highest essential oil yields of 4.30 +/- 0.45 and 3.24 +/- 0.46%, respectively, for organic and conventional mode. However, E6 noted the lowest ethanolic extract yield in the two modes of cultivation. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis of the essential oils revealed the presence of nine essential components in all plant materials. (E)-anethole, methyl-chavicol, fenchone, and limonene were highly abundant. A considerable antioxidant effect was shown for all accessions and a significant difference (p < .05) was reported in the mode of cultivation of essential oils and ethanolic extracts. Concerning antibacterial activity, the essential oils showed generally higher antibacterial activity on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria than ethanolic extracts for organic and conventional fennel seeds. Practical applications Foeniculum vulgare is an aromatic plant widely used nowadays as flavoring as well as food preservative in foods, such as ice cream, meat, and fish dishes. In this context, the chemical composition and biological activities of essential oil and ethanolic extract from fennel seeds cultivated in organic and conventional modes were studied. Fennel seeds extracts presented a richness in polyphenols and flavonoids. In addition, they showed considerable antioxidant activity, while essential oils had a higher antibacterial activity. There is increase demand, nowadays, for such natural and safe products for future applications in the food industries. This article describes a green method for regeneration of carbonyl compounds from various types of oxime compounds under microwave radiation using I-2 and aqueous saponin solution isolated from Shikakai. Effect of saponin concentration on yield percentage of regenerated different types of carbonyl compounds has been discussed. A correlation has been established between saponin concentration and yield percentage of carbonyl compounds. Mechanism of interaction between oxime and saponin is established on the basis of density functional theory. In addition, the quantum chemical parameters for saponin have been determined. Furthermore, electrostatic surface analysis of the saponin is carried out to confirm the mechanism of interaction between saponin and oximes. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Herein, we report the development of a tailor-made fluoride-based heterogeneous catalyst, POLITAG-F, for the waste-minimized continuous production of cyanohydrin silyl ethers. The careful designing of the polymeric support and the choice of fluoride ion as the anionic species resulted in the improvement of catalytic efficiency and allowed the effective conversion of different carbonyls (aldehydes, ketones, and unsaturated ketones). The POLITAG-F catalyst, employed under flow conditions, led to the conversion of large amounts (over 100 mmol) of the substrate with a productivity of 0.1 mmol min(-1). In addition, flow conditions allowed to minimize the waste production reaching an associated E-factor value of 0.04. An exhaustive evaluation of the environmental impact of our protocol has been reported by considering several green metrics (process mass intensity, atom economy, and reaction mass efficiency) and also the benign index and the safety hazard index of the process.

We report herein the synthesis of a polymeric photosensitizer and its application in aerobic photooxidative hydroxylation of boronic acids. The polymeric photosensitizer was synthesized by the condensation of anthraquinone-2-carbonyl chloride (AQ-2-COCl) with poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA). The photo-oxidative hydroxylation of boronic acids using anthraquinone-containing-poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (AQ-PHEMA) was then explored and shown to exhibit high efficiency and broad scope. Moreover, AQ-PHEMA could be easily recovered and reused for more than 20 times without significant loss of the catalytic activity.

The design of multi-target directed ligands (MTDLs) is a valid approach for obtaining effective drugs for complex pathologies. MTDLs that combine neuro-repair properties and block the first steps of neurotoxic cascades could be the so long wanted remedies to treat neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). By linking two privileged scaffolds with well-known activities in ND-targets, the flavonoid and the N,N-dibenzyl(N-methyl)amine (DBMA) fragments, new CNS-permeable flavonoid – DBMA hybrids (1-13) were obtained. They were subjected to biological evaluation in a battery of targets involved in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other NDs, namely human cholinesterases (hAChE/hBuChE), beta-secretase (hBACE-1), monoamine oxidases (hMAO-A/B), lipoxygenase-5 (hLOX-5) and sigma receptors (sigma R-1/sigma R-2). After a funnel-type screening, 6,7-dimethoxychromone – DBMA (6) was highlighted due to its neurogenic properties and an interesting MTD-profile in hAChE, hLOX-5, hBACE-1 and sigma R-1. A simple and highly efficient protocol for the synthesis of derivatives 7, 7-dimethyl-4-phenyl-2-thioxo-2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8-hexahydro-1H-quinazoline-5-one from 5, 5-dimethyl cyclohexane-1, 3-dione (4a-4h) (dimedone) has been described. The aryl aldehydes were substituted with thiourea in the presence of synthesized zinc ferrite nanocatalyst, which increased the yield under reflux through condensation, followed by cyclization to give desired products. The other advantages are that it is eco-friendly and economically affordable for large-scale production. Structural validation and characterization of all the newly synthesized compounds were evaluated by spectral analysis (mass spectrometry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance ((HNMR)-H-1), and Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance((CNMR)-C-13)spectroscopies. The structure of antibacterial and antifungal assays was performed with the newly synthesized compounds. The antimicrobial activity of title compounds possessing electron-withdrawing groups such as (4e-4h) (Cl, Br, and cyano group) exhibited more active potential than the electron-donating groups, C6H5,4-C6H4, 3-OC2H5-4OH-C6H3, etc., (4a-4d) containing moiety.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show promise for catalysis applications due to their porosity, high internal surface area, and structural adaptability. Typical acetylation reactions of aldehydes require elevated temperatures and excess alcohol to drive the reactions to completion. In this current work, MOF-808 is used as a heterogeneous catalyst for acetylation of aldehydes in methanol using a mild photothermal process. Optimized conditions gave 72% yield of 2-(dimethoxymethyl)naphthalene in the presence of 10 mol% MOF-808 at 45 degrees C using only a fluorescent lamp. MOF-808 can be recycled up to 5 times with no loss in catalytic activity. A proof-of-principle substrate scope demonstrates the potential utility for aromatic and aliphatic substrates. The B3NO2 six-membered heterocycle (1,3-dioxa-5-aza-2,4,6-triborinane = DATB), comprising three different non-carbon period 2 elements, has been recently demonstrated to be a powerful catalyst for dehydrative condensation of carboxylic acids and amines. The tedious synthesis of DATB, however, has significantly diminished its utility as a catalyst, and thus the inherent chemical properties of the ring system have remained virtually unexplored. Here, a general and facile synthetic strategy that harnesses a pyrimidine-containing scaffold for the reliable installation of boron atoms is disclosed, giving rise to a series of Pym-DATBs from inexpensive materials in a modular fashion. The identification of a soluble Pym-DATB derivative allowed for the investigation of the dynamic nature of the B3NO2 ring system, revealing differential ring-closing and -opening behaviors depending on the medium. Readily accessible Pym-DATBs proved their utility as efficient catalysts for dehydrative amidation with broad substrate scope and functional-group tolerance, offering a general and practical catalytic alternative to reagent-driven amidation.

An efficient and simple method for determining vanillin, methyl vanillin and ethyl vanillin in milk and dairy products was developed using a liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) procedure coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Different extraction procedures were tested and optimised by spiking three vanillin compounds into a blank matrix in which none of any food additives were detected, and the extraction with acetonitrile solution and n-hexane as cleaning sorbent allowed an efficient recovery of 87.6-101.7% with RSDs less than 5%. The limit of detection (LOD) ranged from 6.2 to 20.1 mu g/kg. High sensitivity, accuracy and selectivity were found for the in-house validated method, which can eliminate the interferences from complicated matrices effectively, and fulfil the quality criteria for routine laboratory application for real samples. The developed method was then finally applied to screen the three analytes in 65 milk and dairy products including infant formula milk powders from local markets to check for compliance with Chinese Regulation. Concentrations of the total vanillin and ethyl vanillin ranged from 0.0323 to 246.3 mg/kg, which is within the limits of Chinese regulations.

A novel series of 7,8-dichlorobenzofuro[3,2-c]quinoline-6,9,10(5H)-triones was obtained regioselectively in good yields. The products were formed by the reactions of the 4-hydroxy-2(1H)-quinolinones with 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone in tetrahydrofuran as the solvent. Infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance (two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance), mass spectra and elemental analysis were used to elucidate the structures of new compounds.
