Construction and application of novel hydrogenation catalysts is important for the conversion of carbonyl or aldehyde compounds into alcohols in the field of biomass utilization. In this work, a novel, efficient, and easily prepared hafnium-graphite oxide (Hf-GO) catalyst was constructed via the coordination between Hf4+ and the carboxylic groups in GO. The catalyst was applied into the hydrogenation of biomass derived carbonyl compounds via the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reaction. The catalyst gave high efficiency under mild conditions. An interesting phenomenon was found whereby the activity of the catalyst increased gradually in the initial stage during reaction. The solvent, isopropanol, was proved to have an activation effect on the catalyst, and the activation effect varied with different alcohols and temperatures. Further characterizations showed that isopropanol played the activation effect via replacing the residual solvent (DMF) in micro- and mesopores during the preparation process, which was hard to be completely removed by common drying process.

Conventional detection and identification of the fungi causing postharvest diseases in fruits are time-consuming, laborious, and can only be performed after the manifestation of symptoms. In this work, an alternative method based on headspace analysis, and which allows the early detection of fungi species frequently found papaya fruit, is presented. Volatile compounds of four in vitro fungi cultures (Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium solani, and Lasiodiplodia theobromae) were extracted using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The resulting chromatographic fingerprints were explored by conventional principal component analysis (PCA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA)-PCA. Decomposition of the original matrix, according to the factors proposed in the experimental design, by ANOVA before applying the PCA improved the distinction of the control and fungi samples. The main chromatographic peaks referring to the metabolites produced by each species were successfully identified using the proposed analysis. A primary alcohol with five carbons and phenylethyl alcohol were observed in all fungi species and so could be used as an indicative of postharvest disease. Although unique metabolites were detected for all fungi species, only those from C. gloeosporioides and another from F. solani could be surely identified, such as thymolmethyl and 3,6-dimethylhept-6-en-4-yn-3-ol, respectively. The in vitro results obtained are promising, and it is expected that the biomarkers detected in this work will be useful in future development of methods for the early detection and classification of papaya fungi species.

Recently, the research work concerning B(C6F5)(3) catalyzed reduction of carbonyl compounds revealed that this Lewis acid B(C6F5)(3) presents, actually, a rather water-tolerant system. This fact considerably broadens the scope of the water/base tolerant frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP) chemistry. In this research, an efficient chemoselective reduction of aldehydes and ketones to alcohols catalyzed by the Lewis acid B(C6F5)(3) has been developed. It is the first report about the chemoselective reduction of carbonyl compounds under aqueous conditions catalyzed by FLPs with hydridosilanes as reducing agents. The selectivity and activity of different hydridosilanes and the influence of substituents in carbonyl compounds have been studied. The effect of water concentration on the chemoselectivity of the reaction has also been investigated. It has been found that a 2 similar to 3 fold excess of water relatively to hydridosilanes usually exhibits better selectivity and overall yields than in the equimolar case. The reduction reaction can even be successfully performed with pure water as a solvent without any loss of the reactivity. Such a procedure has been successfully applied to reduce 14 differently substituted aldehydes and ketones into alcohols with up to 100% yields under mild conditions, but failed in case of the diaryl substituted ketones. Both experimental and computational methods have been performed to confirm the possibility of the water mediated mechanism and the effects of different Lewis bases on the LB-H-OH-LA three-component aggregates. These mechanistic studies have revealed that such water mediation between a carbonyl compound and a catalyst advantageously (i) activates the C=O group by protonation and (ii) fixes the catalytic borane moiety by formation of a B-O bond, which to some extent prevents the direct hydrolysis of hydridosilane and makes the reaction possible under moist conditions. Detailed clarification of the actual role of water in the reduction reaction of question will promote the further development of FLP-catalyzed and related reactions in the green chemistry field.

Bimetallic transition metal phosphide catalysts are promising materials for low-temperature, liquid-phase hydrogenation reactions. This work explores the chemoselective hydrogenation ability of RuMoP using various functionalized aromatic hydrocarbons to provide insight into how the functional groups compete for reduction on the surface of RuMoP. Using molecular hydrogen as the reductant, high selectivity (similar to 99%) to reduction of the substituent is achieved for the hydrogenation of electron withdrawing functionalities such as nitrobenzene, benzaldehyde, and benzophenone with RuMoP to yield aniline, benzyl alcohol, and diphenylmethanol, respectively. In contrast, aromatics with electron donating groups such as phenol, anisole, and toluene, show high ring hydrogenation selectivity (similar to 99%) to form cyclohexanol, methoxycyclohexane, and methyl cyclohexane, respectively, although the reaction proceeded slowly with RuMoP. Pyridine adsorption was studied via diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), which provided evidence of surface electron deficient sites (i.e., Lewis acids) that are responsible for targeting the electron-rich portion of the substrate. Additional DRIFTS experiments were performed using nitrobenzene, anisole, and a mixture of the two. From these experiments, features associated with -NO2 adsorption in nitrobenzene and ring adsorption in anisole were observed, which correlated well with the observed reaction results. Finally, a solvent study provided evidence for the competitive adsorption of isopropanol and the pi-electrons from the aromatic ring of phenol with the former being more favorable on RuMoP surface.

Incorporation of mesopores and active sites into metal-organic framework (MOF) materials to uncover new efficient catalysts is a highly desirable but challenging task. We report the first example of a mesoporous MOF obtained by templated electrosynthesis using an ionic liquid as both electrolyte and template. The mesoporous Cu(II)-MOF MFM-100 has been synthesised in 100 seconds at room temperature, and this material incorporates crystal defects with uncoupled Cu(II) centres as evidenced by confocal fluorescence microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. MFM-100 prepared in this way shows exceptional catalytic activity for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols to produce aldehydes in near quantitative yield and selectivity under mild conditions, as well as having excellent stability and reusability over repeated cycles. The catalyst-substrate binding interactions have been probed by inelastic neutron scattering. This study offers a simple strategy to create mesopores and active sites simultaneously via electrochemical formation of crystal defects to promote efficient catalysis using MOFs.

We report Pd-catalyzed ortho-C-H methoxylation and chlorination of benzaldehydes by employing monodentate transient directing groups (TDGs) as an alternative strategy to bidentate TDGs. More importantly, a single crystal of benzaldehyde imine ortho-cyclopalladium intermediate was successfully obtained, and its structure was unambiguously determined by X-ray diffraction, which clearly showed that it was a binuclear palladium species bridged by a pyridone ligand. The utility of this approach was further demonstrated through the synthesis of key intermediates of natural products and drugs.

The direct trifluoromethylation of a variety of aliphatic alcohols using a hypervalent iodosulfoximine reagent afforded the corresponding ethers in moderate to good yields (14-72 %). Primary, secondary, and even tertiary alcohols, including examples derived from natural products, underwent this transformation in the presence of catalytic amounts of zinc bis(triflimide). Typical reaction conditions involved a neat mixture of 6.0 equivalents of the alcohol with 1.0 equivalent of the reagent, with the majority of reactions complete within 2 h with 2.5 mol % of the Lewis acid catalyst. The novel metal-organic framework Co-2(bdda)(1.5)(OAc)(1)5H(2)O (UoB-3) was synthesized via a simple method at room temperature. UoB-3 was characterized by the different methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N-2-adsorption/desorption and elemental analysis. The catalytic ability of UoB-3 was detected to be excellent for primary and secondary alcohols oxidation reaction with high yields under solvent-free conditions. Moreover, UoB-3 was highly active for Henry reaction of different aldehydes with nitromethane in water as a green solvent. The nanocatalyst can be recycled for five consecutive cycles without losing its activity and structural rigidity. The antibacterial activity of UoB-3 nanostructures towards Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria, Bacillus cereus was also evaluated by using an inhibition zone test. These nanostructures exhibited strong antibacterial effect against both of them. The purpose of this study was the developing metal-organic framework materials with the enhanced activity in various fields.

A cheap, facile and metal-free photochemical protocol for the activation of aromatic aldehydes has been developed. Utilizing thioxanthen-9-one as the photocatalyst and cheap household lamps as the light source, a variety of aromatic aldehydes have been activated and subsequently converted in a one-pot reaction into amides, hydroxamic acids and esters in good to high yields. The applicability of this method was highlighted in the synthesis of Moclobemide, a drug against depression and social anxiety. Extended and detailed mechanistic studies have been conducted, in order to determine a plausible mechanism for the reaction.
