Volatile content during postharvest is a critical factor affecting the quality of rose products. However, changes in the volatile content of cut rose flowers during vase life have not yet been identified although the maturity of flower petals may result in the significant changes of volatile profiles. The present study investigated volatile changes in the petals of two rose varieties, ‘Fuego’ exhibited to longer vase life and ‘Red eagle, during vase life. ‘Fuego’ petals contained 31 volatiles, of which 12 increased and 11 decreased in content during vase life. ‘Red Eagle’ petals contained 37 volatiles, of which 9 increased and 19 decreased. The major components that increased during vase life included 2-ethylhexan-1-ol and phenylmethanol in ‘Fuego’ and hexan-1-ol and 2-phenylacetaldehyde in both cultivars, whereas the major components that decreased during vase life included methyl butanoate in ‘Fuego’, 3,5-dimethoxytoluene in ‘Red Eagle’, and 2-methylhexane in both cultivars. The total volatile content was maintained in ‘Fuego’ petals during the 6-day vase life, despite the changes in the content of individual volatile compound. By contrast, the total volatile content of ‘Red Eagle’ petals significantly decreased during vase life. Additionally, the volatile compounds that increased in content were relatively small molecules (<= C-8), whereas those that decreased in content during vase life were relatively large molecules (>= C-9). These results suggest that the analysis of volatile changes during vase life contribute to the harvest time selection of rose flowers and the determination of petal stages used for essential oil in many rose varieties.

A Fe-III-triflate complex, bearing a bis-thioether-di-phenolate [OSSO]-type ligand, was discovered to promote the ring-opening of glycidol with alcohols under mild reaction conditions (0.05 mol % catalyst and 80 degrees C). The reaction proceeded with high activity (initial turnover frequency of 1680 h(-1) for EtOH) and selectivity (>95 %) toward the formation of twelve monoalkyl glyceryl ethers (MAGEs) in a regioselective fashion (84-96 % yield of the non-symmetric regioisomer). This synthetic approach allows the conversion of a glycerol-derived platform molecule (i.e., glycidol) to high-value-added products by using an Earth-crust abundant metal-based catalyst.

Indian mustard or Brassica juncea (B. juncea) is an oilseed plant used in many types of food (as mustard or IV range salad). It also has non-food uses (e.g., as green manure), and is a good model for phytoremediation of metals and pesticides. In recent years, it gained special attention due to its biological compounds and potential beneficial effects on human health. In this study, different tissues, namely leaves, stems, roots, and flowers of three accessions of B. juncea: ISCI 99 (Sample A), ISCI Top (Sample B), and Broad-leaf (Sample C) were analyzed by HPLC-PDA/ESI-MS/MS. Most polyphenols identified were bound to sugars and phenolic acids. Among the three cultivars, Sample A flowers turned were the richest ones, and the most abundant bioactive identified was represented by Isorhamnetin 3,7-diglucoside (683.62 mu g/100 mg dry weight (DW) in Sample A, 433.65 mu g/100 mg DW in Sample B, and 644.43 mu g/100 mg DW in Sample C). In addition, the most complex samples, viz. leaves were analyzed by GC-FID/MS. The major volatile constituents of B. juncea L. leaves extract in the three cultivars were benzenepropanenitrile (34.94% in Sample B, 8.16% in Sample A, 6.24% in Sample C), followed by benzofuranone (8.54% in Sample A, 6.32% in Sample C, 3.64% in Sample B), and phytone (3.77% in Sample B, 2.85% in Sample A, 1.01% in Sample C). The overall evaluation of different tissues from three B. juncea accessions, through chemical analysis of the volatile and non-volatile compounds, can be advantageously taken into consideration for future use as dietary supplements and nutraceuticals in food matrices.

Cu(II) ions were precipitated on nanofiberous magnesium silicate support using hydroxide solution. The texture and characterization of the obtained solids have been investigated by physical methods including XRD, SEM, BET, EDS, XPS, and FT-IR. The catalysts showed medium surface area, highly distributed Cu(II) oxide on the sepiolite fibers. In the liquid-phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol at low temperatures, CuO serves as an active component for the selective production of benzaldehyde. The catalytic activity of the prepared CuO/sepiolite was associated with the dispersion and amount of CuO loading, location and oxidation states of active sites, preparation routes, and reaction variables. I found the field of Chemistry; Environmental Sciences & Ecology very interesting. Saw the article Development of a method based on thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for the determination of 103 volatile organic compounds in mattresses published in 2020.0. Formula: C7H8O, Reprint Addresses Cao, SR (corresponding author), Southwest Univ Polit Sci & Law, Forens Identificat Ctr, Chongqing, Peoples R China.. The CAS is 100-51-6. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of Benzyl Alcohol

A sensitive and reliable method based on environment test chamber coupled with thermal desorption and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (ETC-TD-GC/MS) was developed and validated for the determination of 103 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from mattresses. In the study, two commercial sorbent tubes were compared in terms of adsorption efficiency towards the target analytes. The result illustrated that the multisorbent tubes containing Carbopack C, Carbopack B and Carboxen 1000 had better performance than Tenax TA tubes owing to their large surface area, low capacity for water and high temperature stability, which allowed a wide range of VOCs to be absorbed, especially for VOCs with low boiling points and small molecules. To achieve the optimum conditions for the analysis, several thermal desportion parameters were accurately investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the method showed good linearities, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9982 to 0.9999 and the method detection limits and method quantification limitsfor target compounds in the range of 0.006 similar to 0.561 mu g/m(3) and 0.020 similar to 1.870 mu g/m(3), respectively. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed method on real samples, various mattresses from different manufacturers were analysed. All mattress samples were found to emit VOCs and the values of area-specific emission rate (SERs) for total target compounds were in the range of 90.25 similar to 288.63 mu g/m(2)center dot h. Moreover, the SERs of VOCs were influenced by the type of sponge materials and mattress fabric layers. The study demonstrated that the method is sensitive, accurate and well-suited for the determination of VOCs emitted from mattresses.

Simple expressions are presented to determine if a binary system will exhibit a minimum or maximum boiling azeotrope using conventional free energy calculations using molecular simulation or electronic structure calculations in a continuum solvent. The expressions compare the solvation free energy of each component at infinite dilution relative to itself, requiring four total solvation free energy calculations per binary system. The solvation free energies can be related to intermolecular interactions and, therefore, shed insight into why an azeotrope occurs. The application of the expressions is demonstrated for 2366 binary systems using solvation free energies computed using electronic structure calculations in the SM12, SM8, and SMD universal solvent models. The overall success rate for predicting the correct phase behavior was 0.718, 0.711, and 0.685 for SM12, SM8, and SMD, respectively.

The construction of C?N bonds was achieved by the dehydrogenative coupling of alcohol and azide via aza-Wittig type reaction. The reaction is catalyzed by an acridine-derived ruthenium pincer complex and does not use any oxidant. The present protocol offers a wide substrate scope, including aliphatic, aryl or heteroaryl alcohol/azides. This expeditious protocol was successfully applied to construct a C?C bond directly from alcohol via dehydrogenative Wittig reaction. Furthermore, the synthesis of structurally important pyrrolo[1,4]benzodiazepine derivatives was also achieved by this methodology.

A diterpene synthase from Saccharopolyspora spinosa was found to convert geranylgeranyl diphosphate into the new natural products spinodiene A and B, accompanied by 2,7,18-dolabellatriene. The structures and the formation mechanism of the enzyme products were investigated by extensive isotopic labelling experiments, which revealed an unusual branched isomerisation mechanism towards the neutral intermediate 2,7,18-dolabellatriene. A Diels-Alder reaction was used to convert the main diterpene product with its rare conjugated diene moiety into formal sesterterpene alcohols.

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME), purge and trap (P&T), stir bar sportive extraction (SBSE), and dynamic headspace sampling (DHS) were applied to extract, separate and analyze the volatile compounds in the roots of Hangbaizhi, Qibaizhi, and Bobaizhi and the GC-O-MS/MS (AEDA) was utilized for the quantification of key aroma compounds. Totals of 52, 54, and 43 aroma-active compounds extracted from the three samples by the four extraction methods were identified. Among these methods, the SPME effectively extracted the aroma compounds from the A. dahurica. Thus, using the SPME methods for quantitative analysis based on external standards and subsequent dilution analyses, totals of 20, 21, and 17 aroma compounds were detected in the three samples by the sniffing test, and sensory evaluations indicated that the aromas of A. dahurica included herb, spice, and woody. Finally, principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the three kinds A. dahurica formed three separate groups, and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) showed that caryophyllene, (-)-beta-elemene, nonanal, and beta-pinene played an important role in the classification of A. dahurica.

Phthalic anhydride and propylene/ethylene oxide are copolymerized at room temperature by a bicomponent metal-free catalyst comprising a mild phosphazene base and triethylborane. Provided with proper loadings of the two catalytic components, block copolymers with strict (AB)(n)B-m type sequence structures and controlled molar mass (up to 60 kg mol(-1)) can be generated in one synthetic step, and the block architecture can be enriched by the use of mono-, di-, or tetrahydroxy initiators. The obtained polyester-polyether block copolymers readily undergo microphase-separation in bulk and nanoaggregation in selective (aqueous and alcoholic) solvents.
