Oxidation of alcohols plays an important role in industrial chemistry. Novel green techniques, such as sonochemistry, could be economically interesting by improving industrial synthesis yield. In this paper, we studied the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol as a model of aromatic alcohol compound under various experimental parameters such as substrate concentration, oxidant nature and concentration, catalyst nature and concentration, temperature, pH, reaction duration, and ultrasound frequency. The influence of each parameter was studied with and without ultrasound to identify the individual sonochemical effect on the transformation. Our main finding was an increase in the yield and selectivity for benzaldehyde under ultrasonic conditions. Hydrogen peroxide and iron sulfate were used as green oxidant and catalyst. Coupled with ultrasound, these conditions increased the benzaldehyde yield by +45% compared to silent conditions. Investigation concerning the transformation mechanism revealed the involvement of radical species.

The volatile fraction of hazelnuts encrypts information about: cultivar/geographical origin, post-harvest treatments, oxidative stability and sensory quality. However, sensory features could be buried under other dominant chemical signatures posing challenges to an effective classification based on pleasant/unpleasant notes. Here a novel workflow that combines Untargeted and Targeted (UT) fingerprinting on comprehensive two-dimensional gas-chromatographic patterns is developed to discriminate spoiled hazelnuts from those of acceptable quality. By flash-profiling, six hazelnut classes are defined: Mould, Mould-rancid-solvent, Rancid, Rancid -stale, Rancid -solvent, and Uncoded KO. Chromatographic fingerprinting on composite 2D chromatograms from samples belonging to the same class (i.e., composite class-images) enabled effective selection of chemical markers: (a) octanoic acid that guides the sensory classification being positively correlated to mould; (b) gamma-nonalactone, gamma-hexalactone, acetone, and 1-nonanol that are decisive to classify OK and rancid samples; (c) heptanoic and hexanoic acids and gamma-octalactone present in high relative abundance in rancid-solvent and rancid-stale samples.

The impact of pod storage (PS) and roasting temperature (RT) on the aroma profiles of dark chocolates were evaluated. Cocoa liquor samples comprised of ten different combinations of PS and RT, whilst keeping the roasting time fixed at 35 min. Additionally, commercial cocoa liquors from renowned origins (Ecuador, Madagascar, Venezuela, Vietnam, Ivory Coast and Ghana) were acquired for comparison. From these, 70% dark chocolates were produced under the same conditions after which they were subjected to headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) analysis. Although both PS and RT were found to influence the aroma volatile concentrations, the impact of RT over PS seemed to be greater. An agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) of all chocolates on the basis of their aroma profiles revealed a similar impact as earlier observed, where major clustering of the chocolates was in accordance with the intensity of the roasting process applied. However, within each group, the dissimilarities owing to PS among the chocolates was clearly depicted. Comparatively, chocolates with low (100-120 degrees C), instead of moderate to high (135-160 degrees C) RT’s, rather showed a low dissimilarity with those from the commercial cocoa liquors of the different origins. Although from the same beans, the diversity of aroma profiles of these chocolates as well as the similitude of some treatments to some chocolates from commercial grade cocoa liquors, unequivocally underscores the possibility for steering diverse distinct flavors from ‘bulk’ cocoa through PS and roasting, with beneficial implications, both from an application and an economic point of view.

A series of iminophosphorane-thiourea/urea bifunctional catalysts was synthesized and utilized for the isoselective ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide. The ROPs were promoted efficiently, affording the polylactides with controlled molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution and well-defined end groups without undesired side reactions. The experiment data revealed that ROPs of rac-LA are a controlled/living process. The highest stereoselectivity (P-m) was up to 0.80 using rac-IPU-1 under mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic study indicated that stereoselective ROPs of rac-LA were mainly controlled by a chain-end control mechanism when using rac/(R,R)-IPTU-1/IPU-1 as catalysts. Additionally, the ee values of -11% at 0 degrees C and -17% at -40 degrees C were achieved at about 50% conversion using (S)-IPU-2 as a chiral catalyst. The selectivity factor (s = k(L)/k(D)) of 1.6 indicated that a clear kinetic resolution occurred and the enantiomorphic site control mechanism was involved.

Palladium catalysed carboxytelomerisation of 1,3-butadiene with alcohols yields unsaturated C-9-pelargonic esters in an atom-economic and straightforward way. Although carboxytelomerisation is of current interest, limitations of applicable alcohol substrates have not been fully investigated. In here, we present the transfer of the catalytic system comprising palladium acetate and tri-n-butyl phosphine in pyridine to a broad variety of 20 alcohols with vast difference in nucleophilicity and sterical demands yielding the corresponding esters in a 100% atom economic manner. Effects of nucleophilicity and sterical demands were revealed for monoalcohols, di- and polyols. Whilst yields, chemoselectivity and E/Z-selectivity of the pelargonic acid derivatives were excellent with up to 99%, selectivity towards mono-, di- and triesters could be controlled successfully. Finally, the reaction profile of the carboxytelomerisation glycerol was uncovered, yielding up to 97% of industrially relevant unsaturated C-9-short chain fats.

Silica was prepared from rice husk-agricultural waste-by soaking and pyrolysis method. Ceria and samaria were impregnated on silica by rotavapor-assisted impregnation method. The physicochemical properties of Ce-Sm/Si catalyst were determined by BET, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, and n-butylamine titration. Catalytic activity was evaluated by oxidation of benzyl alcohol (Bzl-OH) to benzaldehyde (B-CHO) using H2O2 as an oxidant in acetonitrile medium. Different reaction parameters like time, temperature, solvent, and catalyst amount on the reaction were also studied. Among the various catalysts, 50Ce50Sm/Si showed the impressive catalytic performance with a selectivity of 91.4% to benzaldehyde. The improved catalytic performance was attributed to the well dispersion of ceria-samaria on the surface of silica. These materials can be reused effectively up to four cycles without significant loss in their selectivity. Moreover, excellent selectivity of benzaldehyde in shorter duration using modified rice husk silica catalysts makes this protocol highly attractive and practically beneficial. Graphical abstract

Propolis also known as bee glue or bee resin is a resinous mixture of bee saliva or bee wax and exudate from tree trunks and flowers, produced by honeybees. The composition of propolis varies depending on the vegetation the bees can access. It is therefore expected that propolis obtained from various localities may have different chemical profiles. In this study, the headspace volatiles of propolis (n = 39) collected from various locations in South Africa (Gauteng, Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces) were explored for the first time using GCxGC-ToF-MS. Several GCxGC parameters were optimised including; incubation time, temperature and modulation period. Multivariate data analysis techniques (principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses) were applied on the GCxGC-ToF-MS data to investigate trends and clustering patterns within propolis samples. The results demonstrated that headspace volatiles of propolis varied between locations. The volatile profiles were dominated by monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene (1.2-46.5%), beta-pinene (2.0-21.8%), dihydrosabinene (trace-17.8%), limonene (trace-11.6%), p-cymene (0.15.3%), 1,8-cineole (0.1-11.0%), 2,7-dimethyl-3-octen-5-yne (trace-11.7%), E-beta-ocimene (trace-17.8%), octanal (trace-12.9%), styrene (trace-13.5%) and alpha-thujene (trace-11.0%). Principal component analysis revealed chemical variation within propolis from the various locations. The heatmap of the averages revealed dehydrosabinene, isopropentyltoluene, p-cymene, acetophenone and alpha-thujene as chemical markers for the Northern Cape propolis, while lambda-terpinene, propanoic acid, furfural, 2-methoxy benzyl alcohol and hexanoic acid methylester were filtered out as markers for Gauteng propolis. The propolis samples originating from the Western Cape Province were dominated by prenal, cinnamaldehyde styrene, 1,8-cineole, decanal, prenyl acetate and butanoic acid. Using GCxGC-ToF-MS in combination with chemometrics, it was possible to profile headspace volatile constituents of propolis and further identify marker compounds that differentiate propolis from various provinces in South Africa. We recently identified unique caterpillar-induced plant volatile compounds emitted from apple leaves infested with the larvae of various leafroller species. In subsequent field tests, binary blends of phenylacetonitrile + acetic acid and 2-phenylethanol +acetic acid were found to be attractive to a range of tortricid leafroller species (Tortricidae: Tortricinae) in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. In this work, the caterpillar-induced plant volatiles from the apple-leafroller system were tested in two vineyards in Spain and Hungary for their attractiveness to the grape frugivore Lobesia botrana (Tortricidae: Olethreutinae). As seen for Tortricinae species, a binary blend of phenylacetonitrile +acetic acid attracted significantly more male and female L. botrana to traps than acetic acid or blank lures. Traps baited with other caterpillar-induced plant volatile compounds (benzyl alcohol, 2-phenylethanol, indole, and (E)-nerolidol, each as a binary blend with acetic acid) did not catch significantly more moths than traps containing acetic acid alone. The catches of male and female moths support an optimistic future for new products in female tortricid surveillance and control that are based on combinations of kairomone compounds released from larval-damaged foliage.
