We have prepared, by a sol-immobilization method, bimetallic catalysts with different Au:Pt atomic ratios supported on commercial SrCO3. The catalytic performance for the oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol of such materials was compared to the monometallic counterparts. aiming at the obtaining of the best composition of the material. It was found that the Au:Pt atomic ratio presents a remarkable effect on the system performance, i.e., Pt-rich systems arc more selective; however, less active. Thus, an equilibrium related to the activity and selectivity of the system was obtained by considering the yield of the system. Also, some density functional theory (DFT) insights were obtained by using a cluster of 14 atoms of Au and 1 or 2 atoms of Pt. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental mapping in scanning transmission electron microscopy before and after catalyst usage, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, Rietveld refinement, among other techniques, were used and associated to the experimental data, which allowed us to propose a catalytic mechanism for the system, which was important since SiCO3 has not been considered before as catalyst support for alcohol oxidation reactions.

The polymeric micelles were prepared through a copolymerization of allyl polyethylene glycol (APEG) and N-isopropylacrylamide in the presence of 2-aminoethanethiol (AET), followed by a ring opening polymerization of gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride (BLG-NCA). Doxorubicin (DOX) as a model drug was covalently conjugated into the core of micelles via hydrazone bonds. The drug loading capacity could reach up to 15% with drug encapsulation efficiency of 80%. The pH/thermo sensitivities were observed in the process of in vitro drug release. The DOX-loaded micelles exhibited accelerated drug release behaviors in an acidic condition, and enhanced therapeutic efficacy was observed. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of micelles against Hela and 3T3 cells was evaluated before and after drug loading. The DOX-loaded micelles showed strong cytotoxic activity to the cancer cells. But the blank micelles showed non-cytotoxicity. Therefore, the thermo/pH dual-responsive polymeric micelles have a promising future applied as a controlled drug delivery system for anticancer drugs.

Selective production of aromatic aldehydes is an important challenge in the synthesis of fine chemicals. This study presents a viable strategy for the production of benzaldehyde using a magnetic recoverable photocatalyst. Graphitic carbon nitride was submitted to a thermal post-treatment, for partial exfoliation (g-CN-T) and combined with magnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4. The composite containing 18 wt.% of Fe3O4 shows a remarkable magnetic response. The efficiency of this composite was evaluated in the selective photocatalytic conversion of benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde. A good compromise was observed in terms of selectivity for benzaldehyde formation and ability of recovery at the end of the photocatalytic reaction by the application of a magnetic field. Reutilization experiments using this hybrid material revealed a slight decrease of efficiency after the first run only. Moreover, hydrogen was generated during the photocatalytic production of benzaldehyde. Thus, the combination of gCN-T and magnetic nanoparticles provided an impetus to design a photocatalyst with easy and inexpensive features for selective synthesis of organic compounds.

Here, a general and facile synthetic strategy that harnesses a pyrimidine-containing scaffold for the reliable installation of boron atoms is disclosed, giving rise to a series of Pym-DATBs from inexpensive materials in a modular fashion. The identification of a soluble Pym-DATB derivative allowed for the investigation of the dynamic nature of the B3NO2 ring system, revealing differential ring-closing and -opening behaviors depending on the medium. Readily accessible Pym-DATBs proved their utility as efficient catalysts for dehydrative amidation with broad substrate scope and functional-group tolerance, offering a general and practical catalytic alternative to reagent-driven amidation.

A cobalt complex catalyzed tandem conversion of nitrile to N-methylated amide is described using a methanol and water mixture. Using this protocol, several nitriles were directly and efficiently converted to the desired N-methylated amides. Kinetic experiments using H2O18 and CD3OD suggested that water and methanol were the source of the oxygen atom and methyl group, respectively, in the final N-methylated amides. Importantly, the participation of active Co(I)-H species in this transformation was realized from the control experiment. The kinetic isotope effect (KIE) study suggested that the activation of the C-H bond of methanol was a kinetically important step. The Hammett plot confirmed that the reaction was faster with the electron deficient nitriles. In addition, the plausible pathway for the formation of N-methylated amides from the nitriles was supported by the computational study.
