Safety of Benzyl Alcohol

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC x GC-TOF-MS) was combined with conventional mono-dimensional GC-MS to differentiate Croatian virgin olive oils (VOO) according to variety and geographical origin, based on the profile of volatile aroma compounds isolated by HS-SPME. More than 1000 compounds were detected after untargeted profiling and 256 were identified or tentatively identified, providing one of the most detailed profiles of volatile aroma compounds in VOO up to date. Among them, 131 volatile compounds were significantly different across monovarietal VOOs, while 60 were found useful for the discrimination according to geographical origin. Many major lipoxygenase and minor non-lipoxygenase-generated compounds were shown to have discriminating ability with respect to both factors. Multivariate statistical analysis extracted twenty-one volatile markers with the highest discriminant power for varietal differentiation. The approach reported may have practical application in better understanding, defining, managing, and communicating the varietal or geographical typicity of monovarietal VOOs.

Up to four different phases can be present in the heterogeneously catalyzed, liquid phase, aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol over Pt/TiO2. It is shown that the rate of benzyl alcohol oxidation is greatly enhanced upon addition of water to the initial reaction mixture but is not affected by the split between the two liquid phases. The rate of reaction correlates with the composition of water in the phase associated with the catalyst, i. e. the water-poor phase. Water may have various kinetic effects, e. g. a change in the distribution of surface species. It is argued on grounds of thermodynamic consistency that the liquid phase surrounding the catalyst is an intricate part of the catalyst in the aerobic benzyl alcohol oxidation over Pt/TiO2; water present in this liquid phase interacts with species on the surface altering the reaction kinetics.

H-bond donor (HBD) and base co-catalysis achieved great success in ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Parallel H-bond donor and Bronsted acid (HBD-BA) cocatalysis has been scarcely explored in ROPs. In developing the HBD-BA catalysis in to versatile toolbox for ring-opening polymerizations of wider scope and better control, tunable HBDs including boronate pinacol ester urea (BU), urea (U), and thiourea (TU) were evaluated in cooperation with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in HBD-BA catalytic mode. Each of the HBD-TFA co-catalyst promoted ROPs of S-valerolactone (VL) and e-caprolactone (CL) successfully. The catalytic performances of the HBD-TFA on the HBD part was in an order of BU > U > TU to their corresponding ROPs of VL and CL. The turnover frequencies of the catalyzed ROPs of VL and CL by BU-TFA was twice as that of TFA. The ROPs afforded homopolymers with predicted molecular weights (PVL, Mn,NMR = 2.51-9.92 kg mol(-1); PCL, Mn,NMR = 2.51-11.1 kg mol(-1)) and narrow dispersities (PVL, D <= 1.16; PCL, D <= 1.18) by ratios of monomer to initiator from 20 to 100. The obtained polymers were analyzed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and MALDI-ToF MS, the results indicated the high chain-end fidelity. Chain extension experiments were conducted by a first ROP of VL/ CL and second ROP of CL/VL with precise molecular weights (from 2.98 kg mol(-1) to 6.15 kg mol(-1)) and narrow dispersities below 1.18. The kinetics plots showed a distinct first order relationship between ln([VL](o)/[VL]) versus the reaction time, it indicated the controlled nature of the catalytic ROP. NMR titrations supported the proposed mechanism that HBD associated with TFA and promoted the cationic polymerization. Photocatalytic hydrogen production coupled with selective oxidation of organic substrates to produce high-value-added fine chemicals has drawn increasing attention. Herein, we report a noble metal-free photocatalyst for the highly efficient and simultaneous generation of hydrogen and the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde over CdS@MoS(2)heterostructures under visible light. Without the need for a sacrificial agent, CdS@MoS(2)displayed an excellent hydrogen production rate of 4233 mu mol g(-1)h(-1)with 0.3 mmol benzyl alcohol, which is approximately 53 times higher than that of bare CdS nanorods (80 mu mol g(-1)h(-1)). The reaction system was highly selective for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde. When the amount of benzyl alcohol increased to 1.0 mmol, the hydrogen production reached 9033 mu mol g(-1)h(-1). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images revealed that p-type MoS(2)sheets with a flower-like structure closely adhered to n-type semiconductor CdS nanorods through the formation of a p-n heterojunction. As a potential Z-scheme photocatalyst, the CdS@MoS(2)heterostructure effectively produces and separates electron-hole pairs under visible light. Thus, the electrons are used for reduction to generate hydrogen, and the holes oxidize benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde. Moreover, a mechanism of photogenerated charge transfer and separation was proposed and verified by photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, photocurrent and Mott-Schottky measurements. The results reveal that the CdS@MoS(2)heterojunctions have rapid and efficient charge separation and transfer, thereby greatly improving benzyl alcohol dehydrogenation. This work provides insight into the rational design of high-performance Z-scheme photocatalysts and the use of holes and electrons to obtain two valuable chemicals simultaneously.

This investigation mainly focuses on the characteristic study on combustion, performance and emission of gasoline blended with lower order alcohol, i.e. ethanol and higher order alcohol, i.e. benzyl alcohol in the ratio of 10% and 20% by volume of the overall quantity. These two alcohols were blended with gasoline and investigated solely to find the comparison between higher and lower order alcohols and thus to identify the optimum blend based on the performance and emission characteristics. The blends were tested in a commercial two-cylinder 624 cc gasoline engine with multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) system and data acquisition capability. The fuel blends were tested at different loads ranging from 20% to 100% with a step size of 20% in ascending sequence. At full load, higher alcohol blend showed an improvement in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of 32.8% and 33.2% for Bn10 and Bn20, when compared to neat gasoline 29.77% and BTE of lower alcohol registered a slight improvement in comparison to gasoline, i.e. 30.41% and 31.1% for E10 and E20 respectively. HC emissions were reduced to 70 ppm and 57 ppm for lower and higher alcohol blends respectively, which is lower compared to 88 ppm for gasoline. CO and CO2 emissions were reduced with both lower and higher alcohol blends in comparison with neat gasoline. NOx emissions show a reduction nature with alcohol blends when compared to neat gasoline at all the load conditions. It is perceived that based on the performance, emission and combustion characteristics, higher alcohol namely benzyl alcohol blend with gasoline is optimum.

Preparation of mixed carbonates proceeded in one step from ketones and aldehydes via treatment with NaBH4 in dimethyl or diethyl carbonate solvent at elevated temperatures. This is an efficient and convenient alternative to the traditional two-step sequence of carbonyl reduction to alcohol and subsequent carbonate formation by treatment with an alkyl chloroformate. 25 examples are presented from 49 to 92% yield, highlighting the versatility of this reaction. Great efforts have been made to enhance the efficiency of the solar light-activated photocatalyst in recent years. In this work, monodispersed copper nanoclusters protected by N-acetyl-L-cysteine ligand (Cu@NALC) were synthesized. The optical properties and chemical composition of the synthesized copper clusters were studied by UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopies, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The charge of copper atoms in Cu@NALC clusters was zero as was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A novel nanocomposite consisting of similar to 1 nm copper clusters, Degussa TiO2 P25, and activated carbon (Cu@NALC/TiO2/AC) was prepared to use as a solar light-activated photocatalyst. The synthesized copper clusters showed significantly increase solar light absorption and improved the efficiency of Cu@NALC/TiO2/AC nanocomposite for photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA), compared with Cu@NALC/AC and TiO2/AC nanocomposites. Cu@NALC clusters induce the TiO2 to absorb the visible light, where the copper nanoclusters absorb visible light from 400-700 nm. The copper clusters mainly adsorb on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles, as well on the activated carbon surface as shown in HR-TEM analysis. The highly efficient photocatalytic activity of this nanocomposite is attributed also to the large surface area of activated carbon as shown in surface area analysis (692.8 m(2)/g). Cu@NALC/TiO2/AC nanocomposite achieved 100% conversion of BA with >= 99 % selectivity after 6 h solar irradiation; however Cu@NALC/AC, TiO2/AC and TiO2 -P25 showed only 66.35 %, 55.43 % and 44.78 %, respectively. All the components of this nanocomposite are cheap and available, in addition to the high photocatalytic activity, were found to be the most economically and suitable system for the industrial application.

In this study, a comparative efficacy of Cananga odorata EO (CoEO) and its nanoencapsulated formulation into chitosan nanoemulsion (CoEO-CsNe) against a toxigenic strain of Aspergillus flavus (AF-M-K5) were investigated for the first time in order to determine its efficacy in preservation of stored food from fungal, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination and lipid peroxidation. GC and GC-MS analysis of CoEO revealed the presence of linalool (24.56%) and benzyl acetate (22.43%) as the major components. CoEO was encapsulated into chitosan nanoemulsion (CsNe) through ionic-gelation technique and characterized by High Resolution-Scanning Electron Microscopy (HR-SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The CoEO-CsNe during in vitro investigation against A. flavus completely inhibited the growth and AFB1 production at 1.0 mu L/mL and 0.75 mu L/mL, respectively. Additionally, CoEO-CsNe showed improved antioxidant activity against DPPH center dot and ABTS(center dot)+ with IC50 value 0.93 and 0.72 mu L/mL, respectively. Further, CoEO-CsNe suppressed fungal growth, AFB1 secretion and lipid peroxidation in Arachis hypogea L. during in situ investigation without causing any adverse effect on seed germination. Overall results demonstrated that the CoEO-CsNe has potential of being utilized as a suitable plant based antifungal agent to improve the shelf-life of stored food against AFB1 and lipid peroxidation mediated biodeterioration. Accurate, reliable, and informative mapping of untargeted and targeted components across many samples is here performed by combining off-line GC-Olfactometry (GC-O) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry with variable ionization energy (TOF MS featuring Tandem Ionization (TM)). In particular, untargeted and targeted (UT) features patterns are processed by chromatographic fingerprinting, giving differential priority to potent odorants’ retention-times regions. Distinguishing peppermint essential oil (EO) from Piedmont (Italy – Mentha x piperita L. var. Italo-Mitcham – Menta di Pancalieri EO), with its unique sensory fingerprint (i.e., freshness and long-lasting sweetness), from high-quality peppermint EOs produced in other areas poses a great challenge. Chromatographic UT fingerprinting provided a great chemical dimensionality by mapping more than 350 peak-regions at 70 eV and 135 at 12 eV. From them, 95 components were identified and responses compared to available literature. Then, potent odorants, detected by GC-O using the aroma extraction dilution analysis (AEDA), were tracked over the chromatographic space and tentatively identified. With the highest flavor dilution (FD), 1,8-cineole (eucalyptus, fresh, camphoraceous); menthone (minty, herbaceous); and menthofuran (minty, musty, petroleum-like) were highlighted. Responsible for creamy and coumarinic notes were the diasteroisomers of (3,6)-dimethyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]-furan-2(3H)-one (i.e., menthofurolactones), detected in higher relative abundance in Pancalieri EOs. By prioritizing the investigation of volatiles on higher LogFD retention regions, including 131 untargeted/targeted features, Pancalieri EOs were separately clustered from United States samples. Besides pre-targeted analytes, additional untargeted features were post-processed for identification within marker chemicals. Myrtenyl methyl ether, ethyl 3-methyl butanoate, propyl-2-methylbutanoate, and (E)-2-hexenal were putatively identified. Of the unknown – knowns with diagnostic roles, all metadata were collected including low energy spectra at 12 eV, which were found to be highly complementary to 70 eV spectra. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V.
