Benzyl alcohol (BnOH) is a natural colorless liquid organic compound that plays an important role in bacteriostatic and anesthetic processes. It is also used to relieve the nerve and ganglionic pain. In this study, we assessed the effect of topical application of BnOH on the Achilles tendon healing process. Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to an experimentally induced wound in the tendon area and then randomized into four groups. Normal saline (0.5 mL) was applied to rats in control group, and BnOH at the concentrations of 0.5 mL 0.075%, 0.15%, 0.3% were applied to the BnOH treatment groups, respectively. Wound treatment with BnOH led to significantly faster functional recovery than with saline. Moreover, treatment of wounds with 0.3% BnOH accelerated the healing process faster than with 0.075% and 0.15% BnOH. Histological analysis of healed wounds that had been treated with BnOH showed more collagen and blood capillaries and fewer inflammatory cells compared to the control. To study the mechanism of the process, the expression of mRNA of TGF-beta 1, Smad2/3 and Smad7 and protein of TGF-beta 1, p-Smad2/3 and Smad7 were quantified by real-time PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Results of this study showed that wounds treated with BnOH significantly enhanced the expression of TGF-beta 1 and Smad2/3 and reduced the expression of Smad7. In general, the current study demonstrated that BnOH improved the recovery process of tendon healing through the promotion of collagen with angiogenesis and showed that TGF-beta plays a role in BnOH treatment of tendon healing. Optimal performance of multi-step enzymatic one-pot cascades requires a facile balance between enzymatic activity and stability of multiple enzymes under the employed reaction conditions. We here describe the optimization of an exemplary two-step one-pot recycling cascade utilizing the thiamine diphosphate (ThDP)-dependent benzaldehyde lyase from Pseudomonas fluorescens (PfBAL) and the alcohol dehydrogenase from Ralstonia sp. (RADH) for the production of the vicinal 1,2-diol (1R,2R)-1-phenylpropane-1,2-diol (PPD) using both enzymes as catalytically active inclusion bodies (CatIBs). PfBAL is hereby used to convert benzaldehyde and acetalydehyde to (R)-2-hydroxy-1-phenylpropanone (HPP), which is subsequently converted to PPD. For recycling of the nicotinamide cofactor of the RADH, benzyl alcohol is employed as co-substrate, which is oxidized by RADH to benzaldehyde, establishing a recycling cascade. In particular the application of the RADH, required for both the reduction of HPP and the oxidation of benzyl alcohol in the recycling cascade is challenging, since the enzyme shows deviating pH optima for reduction (pH 6-10) and oxidation (pH 10.5), while both enzymes show only low stability at pH>8. This inherent stability problem hampers the application of soluble enzymes and was here successfully addressed by employing CatIBs of PfBAL and RADH, either as single, independently mixed CatIBs, or as co-immobilizates (Co-CatIBs). Single CatIBs, as well as the Co-CatIBs showed improved stability compared to the soluble, purified enzymes. After optimization of the reaction pH, the RADH/PfBAL ratio and the co-solvent content, we could demonstrate that almost full conversion (>90%) was possible with CatIBs, while under the same conditions the soluble enzymes yielded at most >50% conversion. Our study thus provides convincing evidence that (Co-)CatIB-immobilizates can be used efficiently for the realization of cascade reactions, i. e. under conditions where enzyme stability is a limiting issue.

Formulation of delivery systems for active ingredients is of increasing importance for the food industry. For that purpose, we selected cellulose as a carrier polymer of raspberry volatiles. Freeze-dried cellulose/raspberry complexes were prepared by complexation of raspberry juice (constant amount) and cellulose (2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%). In our study, cellulose was shown as a good carrier of raspberry juice volatiles. Thirty-nine volatiles were detected in raspberry juice while 11 of them were lost during preparation of the complexes. Berry flavor note was the dominant one in raspberry juice (40% of overall flavor), followed by citrus and woody notes (each around 18% of overall flavor) and floral, fruity, and green (each around 8% of overall flavor). Cellulose/raspberry complexes had different flavor profiles, but a berry flavor note was still the dominant one in all complexes. These results suggest an efficient plant-based approach to produce value-added cellulose/volatile dry complexes with possible utility as food flavoring ingredients.

Three copper(I) complexes, [CuCl(L)(PPh3)(2)] [L = FL (1), BL (2) or TL (3)] were prepared from [(PPh3)(2)Cu(mu-Cl)(2)Cu(PPh3)] and N-carbamothioylfuran-2-carboxamide (FL), N-carbamothioylbenzamide (BL) or N-carbamothioylthiophene-2-carboxamide (TL) ligands in benzene and four-coordinated tetrahedral copper complexes were well characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (UV/Vis, FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and P-31 NMR). The molecular structure of the ligands (FL and BL) and complexes was established from single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Copper complexes have been shown to catalyse the one-pot synthesis of imines and quinoxalines. Heterogenized catalyst (4) was prepared by reacting more active complex 3 with polystyrene supported triphenylphosphane, and characterized by elemental analyses, and DRS-UV, FT-IR, ICP-OES, and solid-state NMR techniques. Catalytic activity of the complexes (3 and 4) was tested in the formation of imines from alcohols and amines, and quinoxalines from hydroxy ketones and diamines. Heterogeneity and reusability of catalyst 4 were evaluated, and the catalyst can be reused for four runs without any loss in activity.

Linear-brush and star-brush poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) with tunable branching degree and side chain length were successfully obtained via metal-free ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide using hydroxylated polybutadiene (HPB) as a macroinitiator and t-BuP4 as a catalyst. The branching degree and side chain length of brush PEGs can be tailored simply by controlling the number of hydroxyl groups ([OH]) on backbone and the feed ratio of ethylene oxide/[OH], respectively. The effects of molecular weight and macromolecular architecture on crystallization behavior were systematically investigated through crystallization kinetics and morphologies. In all cases, the thermal parameters, including T-c, Delta H-c, and Delta H-m, increase with increasing molecular weight of side chains, while decrease with an increasing the branching degree, suggesting an increased or reduced crystallinity. According to the Avrami equation, the rate constant K decreases while the n values increase with branching degree increasing. POM observations suggested that the spherulites growth rate G decreases with branching degree increasing under the same supercooling. Nonetheless, with increasing the side chain length, the spherulites growth rate G decreases for linear and star PEGs while increases instead for brush PEGs, suggesting that the crystal growth rate of PEGs is influenced by topological structure and supercooling simultaneously. Consequently, with increasing the side chain length, K-g and sigma(e) increase for linear and star PEGs, while K-g and sigma(e) decrease for brush structures. Both K-g and sigma(e) increase regardless of macromolecular architecture with an increasing branching degree. Based on Hoffman-Lauritzen analysis, the transition of regime II to regime III for brushed PEG (Delta T = 15 K) require larger supercooling than linear and star PEGs (Delta T = 10 K).

Sequence-controlled polymerization is the forefront of polymer chemistry. Herein, the feasibility of sequence regulation by using organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP) is demonstrated. In particular, ring expansion strategy is employed to synthesize pre-organized monomers 1 and 2. ROP is conducted by using 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene and benzyl alcohol as the catalyst and initiator, respectively. Poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) P1-P3 comprising glycolic acid, lactic acid, and 7-aminoheptanoic acid units are obtained in high molecular weights and good yields. NMR and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry results verify the microstructural integrity of P1 and P2. Differential scanning calorimetry results show that PEA without methyl branches is crystalline. Moreover, thermal stability, surface wettability, and degradation profiles of P1-P3 are also investigated.

We reported the preparation of well-defined poly(thionophosphoester)s as oxidation-responsive materials that undergo peroxide-triggered degradation. The polymers were synthesized via the controlled ring-opening polymerization of cyclic thionophosphoesters initiated with hydroxyl terminal small molecule and macromolecular initiators and catalyzed with 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. The resulting poly-(thionophosphoester)s were characterized in detail by NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. Polymerization of cyclic oxophosphoester (P=O) monomers exhibited broad molecular weight distribution and severe side reactions, while narrow molecular weight distribution ((D) over bar (M) similar to 1.1) was achieved without significant transesterifications using thionophosphoester (P=S) monomers. The reaction kinetics of thionophosphoester monomers were in agreement with living polymerization characteristics. Furthermore, by replacing P=O bond by P=S, the polymers changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. These well-controlled sulfur-containing polymers are more resistant to hydrolytic degradation but undergo peroxide-triggered degradation. Poly(thionophosphoester)s are thus promising in the field of biomedical materials.

For developing low-temperature processed electron-transporting layer in perovskite solar cells, titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticle was synthesized through the non-hydrolytic sol-gel route. TiO2 nanoparticles showed uniform film coverage, high transparency in the visible region with wide optical bandgap, and high electrical conductivity after systematically optimizing the synthetic reaction time, the thermal annealing temperature, and the concentration of Nb doping. When TiO2 nanoparticle was introduced as an electron-transporting layer through low-temperature deposition process, the perovskite solar cells fabricated in ambient conditions showed high efficiencies of 18.97% and 13.51% on the rigid glass and the flexible plastic substrate, respectively. An impressively high open circuit voltage of 1.17 V and short circuit current density of 22.21 mA cm(-2) were achieved due to the well aligned work function and better electrical conductivity of Nb-doped LT-TiO2 layer. Importantly, solar cells fabricated with TiO2 nanoparticle showed high thermal stability, negligible hysteresis, and reduced charge recombination loss at electron-transporting layer/perovskite interfaces. This study shows that TiO2 nanoparticle can be obtained through the low cost and facile synthesis and has high potential as an electron-transporting layer for low-temperature processable perovskite solar cells.
