Four polar stationary phases (ethylene-bridged hybrid silica, cyanopropyl, 2-ethylpyridine, and zwitterionic sulfobetaine) have been characterized in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) by linear free energy relationships (LFER) method with an extended set of Abraham’s descriptors. Temperature (25-55 degrees C) and pressure (110-180 bar) effects on analyte retention, separation selectivity and LFER-coefficients of chromatographic systems have been studied using the 89 test compounds of various chemical classes and carbon dioxide – methanol (9:1 v/v) binary solvent as a mobile phase. It was found that for the selected stationary phases temperature and pressure had only moderate effects on selectivity. The retention times of all analytes decrease, as can be expected, if the pressure rises at the isothermal conditions due to the increase of the fluid density and its eluting power. The effect of temperature on retention is complicated and depends both on the chemical class of analyzed compounds and the stationary phase type. Temperature and pressure variations lead to small changes in the LFER-coefficients, and general trends observed do not depend much on the stationary phase type. It may be difficult to interpret the LFER-analysis results because of the evident, more significant chromatographic phenomena. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Improper formation or remodeling of the pharyngeal arch arteries (PAAs) 3, 4, and 6 contribute to some of the most severe forms of congenital heart disease. To study the formation of PAAs, we developed a protocol using whole-mount immunofluorescence coupled with benzyl alcohol/benzyl benzoate (BABB) tissue clearing, and confocal microscopy. This allows for the visualization of the pharyngeal arch endothelium at a fine cellular resolution as well as the 3D connectivity of the vasculature. Using software, we have established a protocol to quantify the number of endothelial cells (ECs) in PAAs, as well as the number of ECs within the vascular plexus surrounding the PAAs within pharyngeal arches 3, 4, and 6. When applied to the whole embryo, this methodology provides a comprehensive visualization and quantitative analysis of embryonic vasculature.

There is growing evidence that the very presence of human beings in an enclosed environment can impact air quality by affecting the concentrations of certain airborne volatile organic compounds (VOC). This influence increases considerably when humans perform different activities, such as using toiletries, or simply eating and drinking. To understand the influence of these parameters on the concentrations of selected airborne constituents, a study was performed under simulated residential conditions in an environmentally-controlled exposure room. The human subjects either simply remained for a certain time in the exposure room, or performed pre-defined activities in the room (drinking wine, doing sport, using toiletries, and preparation of a meal containing melted cheese). The impact of each activity was assessed separately using our analytical platform and exposure room under controlled environmental conditions. The results showed that prolonged human presence leads to increased levels of isoprene, TVOCs, formaldehyde and, to a lesser extent, acetaldehyde. These outcomes were further supported by results of meta-analyses of data acquired during several internal studies performed over two years. Furthermore, it was seen that the indoor concentrations of several of the selected constituents rose when the recreational and daily living activities were performed. Indeed, an increase in acetaldehyde was observed for all tested conditions, and these higher indoor levels were especially notable during wine-drinking as well as cheese meal preparation. Formaldehyde increased during the sessions involving sport, using toiletries, and cheese meal preparation. Like acetaldehyde, acrolein, crotonaldehyde and particulate matter levels rose significantly during the cheese meal preparation session. In conclusion, prolonged human residence indoors and some recreational and daily living activities caused substantial emissions of several airborne pollutants under ventilation typical for residential environments. An efficient and highly selective phosphine-free NN-manganese(I) complex catalyst system was developed for the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with amines to form imines. The coupling reactions underwent at 3 mol % catalyst loading, and a large range of alcohols and amines with diverse functional groups was applied, including challenging diol and diamine. The target imine products were obtained in good to excellent yields. The present work provides an alternative method to construct highly active nonprecious metal complex catalysts based on phosphine-free ligands.

Intrinsically disordered proteins are an emerging class of proteins without a folded structure and currently disorder-based drug targeting remains a challenge. p53 is the principal regulator of cell division and growth whereas MDM2 consists its main negative regulator. Metal-doped zeolitic microporous materials are often viewed as something extremely negative as catalysis for the reactions involving aromatic molecules because of severe diffusion limitation. For these reasons, many chemists aim to development of the large microporous or hierarchical micro-mesoporous zeolites as supports that allow for the access of the bulky reactants. But the small micropore with respect to an aromatic molecules-involving reaction is not always a negative point. Here we employed a hierarchical micro-mesoporous CeAlPO-5 molecular sieve (HP-CeAlPO-5) as the catalyst that can catalyze stereoselective synthesis of E-imines through the reaction of alcohols with amines. Control reactions, DFT calculations and GC-MS analyses demonstrated that the feature of the uniform small micropore in the HP-CeAlPO-5 catalyst play a key role in the stereoselective synthesis of E-imines. In addition, the reaction tolerates a broad range of alcohols and amines, and can be performed with as little as 0.89 mole percent catalyst in more than 90.6 percent yield and about 99.7 : 0.3 stereoselective ratio. This zeolitic catalyst provides a conceptually new and practical protocol to stereoselective synthesis of E-imine compounds.

The palladium catalyst for the nucleophilic substitution of benzyl carbonates was improved by using 1,1′-bis(diisopropylphosphino)ferrocene (DiPrPF) as the ligand. The [Pd(eta(3)-C3H5)(cod)]BF4-DiPrPF catalyst allows the benzylic substitution with soft carbanions to proceed even at 30 degrees C, affording the desired products in high yields (up to 99% yield). Thermally unstable pyridylmethyl esters are employable as the electrophilic substrates for the benzylic alkylation with the improved catalyst. Furthermore, we investigated the mechanism of the catalytic benzylic alkylation by means of DiPrPF ligand. The palladium(0) complex bearing DiPrPF activates the benzylic C-O bond to form the (benzyl)palladium(II) intermediate at room temperature. The coordination mode of the benzyl ligand would be equilibrium between the eta(1)- and eta(3)-manner. The nucleophile would preferentially react with the eta(3)-benzyl ligand to give the desired product.
