Two different hydrolysis strategies, namely acid hydrolysis (pH 0 and 3) and enzyme hydrolysis (Rapidase AR2000, beta-glucosidase, 5.6 nkat/mg), and the effect of hydrolysis time on the liberation of glycosidically bound volatiles from tamarillo (Solanum beaceum Cay.), were evaluated. Free and bound volatile profiles in tamarillo were also compared. Enzymatic hydrolysis was favoured for the liberation of aldehydes, esters, and terpenes. Harsh acidic hydrolysis (pH 0) was particularly effective at releasing C-13-norisoprenoids including 3-hydroxy-beta-damascone and 1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene (TDN), but those compounds cannot contribute to the pleasant odour. Moreover, the longer the duration of enzymatic hydrolysis, the higher was the concentration of alcohols, terpenes, benzenoids, ketones, and volatile phenols. On the other hand, 33 free and 49 bound volatiles were identified in tamarillo with a complementary profile: the major free volatiles were alcohols ((Z)-3-hexenol, 1-hexanol) and esters (methyl caproate, methyl butanoate and ethyl butanoate), while bound volatile compounds showed higher concentrations of benzenoids (benzyl alcohol and phenylethyl alcohol) and terpenes, including prenol, linalool and alpha-terpineol. Many glycosidically bound volatiles are available as aroma reservoirs in tamarillo, and to liberate these compounds during tamarillo-based product development, attention should be given to hydrolysis strategies and incubation time.

The copolymerization of vinyl benzyl alcohol (VBA) and carbon monoxide (CO) to give a new polyester poly(VBA-CO) has been achieved via palladium-catalyzed hydroesterification. Reaction conditions involve moderate temperatures, moderate to low CO pressures, and low catalyst loadings to give a low molar mass (M-n similar to 3-4 kg/mol) polymer as a similar to 2:1 mixture of linear to branched repeat units. The polymer molar mass increase is consistent with a step-growth polymerization mechanism, and ester yields of >97% are achieved within 24 h. However, increases in M-n cease beyond 16 h. Control experiments indicate that the degree of polymerization is limited due to a combination of side reactions such as alcoholic end-group oxidation, hydroxycarbonylation, and alcohol acetylation, which lead to the degradation of monomeric and polymeric end groups. When a less promiscuous substrate is used such as 10-undecenol, higher molar masses (M-n similar to 16 kg/mol) are achieved. This method has the potential to be a mild route to new polyester architectures with appropriate mitigation of side reactions.

The dispersibility of photocatalytic polymeric materials is currently a limiting factor for wide scale use. Indeed, the dispersibility of photocatalytic material in solvents dictates its use as heterogenous catalysts, due in part to reagent solubility. Here, we describe a new platform for producing porous polymer photocatalytic nanoparticles that are easily dispersible in a broad range of solvents. Photocatalytic porous classical polymer nanoparticles have been designed, based on classical porous nanoparticles copolymerised with photocatalytic moieties. The combination of both classical and photocatalytic monomers results in an affordable highly photocatalytically effective material, that can be easily dispersed in a wide range of solvents. The versatility and useability of this new material has been demonstrated by photocatalysing a number of pharmaceutically relevant compounds in solvents with varying polarity.

The kinetics of aliphatic polyester synthesis is critical to understanding the mechanism of ring-opening polymerization and making the reaction more controllable. In this paper, we introduce a gas-driven droplet flow reactor to determine the reaction kinetics of 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) catalyzed delta-valerolactone polymerization. Only 2 mL reaction solution was used for each test, which significantly reduced the work in preparing the anhydrous reactants. The experimental results indicated that the orders of the catalyst and the alcohol in the kinetic model are close to 1 and 0, respectively, and therefore the rate-determining step was the activation reaction between the monomer and catalyst. Then, the activated monomer quickly reacts with the end hydroxyl in the polymer chain to finish the reaction. In the end, we calculated the activation energy of the rate-determining reaction, which is only 7.302 +/- 0.047 kJ mol(-1).

The aim of this study was the production of blueberry wine and the characterization of the volatile compounds of fermented and aging in bottle products. Multivariate data analysis indicated similarity of volatile compounds released when fermentations were conducted at laboratory-scale and midscale, with the exception of one replicate creating a distinctive group characterized by low concentrations of acetaldehyde, methanol, 1-hexanol, and ethyl hexanoate, and the production of polyalcohols such as 2,3-butanediols. This experiment was the only one where no adjustments of YAN were performed. Some of the major volatile compounds (acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, 2-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and 2-phenylethanol) were found above their perception thresholds. Esters and terpenic compounds were the groups of volatiles expressed the most in blueberry wines, followed by volatile fatty acids, alcohols, and norisoprenoids (3-hydroxy-7,8-dihydro-beta-ionone, 3-oxo-a-ionol, and 3-hydroxy-7,8-dihydro-beta-ionol). The wines that experienced bottle-aging are characterized by high concentrations of ethyl esters, diethyl succinate, ethyl lactate, and diethyl malonate. The results contribute for deeper knowledge of the technological procedure, analytical characteristics, and volatile compounds of blueberry wines, reinforcing the interest in this beverage and opening perspectives for further studies on the production of new blueberry-based products with differential characteristics that value its nutraceutical and functional properties.

A large library of thioether/selenoether-phosphite ligands have been tested in the Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic substitution reaction. The presented ligands are derived from cheap and available carbohydrates and they are air-stable solids and easy to handle. Their highly modular nature has made it possible to achieve excellent enantioselectivities in the substitution of a range of hindered and unhindered substrates (ees up to 99% and 91%, respectively). In addition, twelve C-, N- and O-nucleophiles can be efficiently introduced, independently of their nature. Among the whole library, ligands that contain an additional chiral centre in the alkyl backbone chain next to the phosphite group and an enantiopure biaryl phosphite group provided the best enantioselectivities. In general, there is a cooperative effect between these two chiral elements, and therefore, a matched combination between them is necessary to achieve the highest enantioselectivities. However, in the case of cyclic substrates, this cooperative effect is less pronounced and advantageously, both enantiomers of the product can be obtained by setting up the desired configuration of the biaryl phosphite group. Studies of the key Pd-pi-allyl intermediates allowed us to better understand the enantioselectivities obtained experimentally.

Carbon-supported palladium catalysts are widely used for hydrogenation of various organic compounds in the fine chemical industry. The nanoscale geometry and electronic structure of supported Pd nanoparticles play a crucial role in providing the necessary catalytic properties. To improve catalytic activity and selectivity of Pd nanoparticles, it is possible to fine tune their intrinsic properties (e.g., size and oxidation state) by controlling the chemical transformations at different stages of catalyst preparation. Recent years have seen considerable advancement in developing new catalyst preparation techniques as well as in understanding the mechanism of active site formation. This review summarizes some of the existing approaches to regulating the catalytic properties of carbon-supported palladium by variation of the carbon support, the composition of palladium precursor and its reduction conditions, as well as the addition of a second active metal.
