This study reveals cobalt-catalyzed sustainable synthesis of benzimidazoles by redox-economical coupling of o-nitroanilines and alcohols. The major advantage of this report is the use of a commercially available cheap cobalt catalyst to produce a wide variety of 2-substituted benzimidazoles by hydrogen autotransfer without using any additional external redox reagent and costly ligand system. A thorough mechanistic insight of the reaction is proposed by performing a series of control experiments.

The spiced beef is exposed to the invading of spoilage bacteria including Listeria monocytogenes. In the present study, the antimicrobial effects against L. monocytogenes of the chitosan (CS) films incorporated with apricot (Prunus armeniaca) kernel essential oil (AKEO) at 0.5% and 1.0% were demonstrated in solid medium, micro-atmosphere, liquidmedia and spiced beef. In the refrigerated storage for 24 days at 4 degrees C, compared with the control sample, the levels of peroxide value (PV) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) of the spiced beef packed by CS films incorporated AKEO at 0.5% and 1.0% were decreased to 4.8 and 3.6 meq peroxide/kg, and 0.5 and 0.4 mg MDA/kg (p < 0.5 or p < 0.1), and the levels for pH and total carbonyls (TC) were decreased to 5.8 and 5.7, and 0.7 and 0.6 nmol/mg protein (p < 0.5 or p < 0.1) on the 24th day, respectively. Furthermore, the sensory evaluation exhibited that the spiced beef packed by CS films incorporated AKEO at 1.0% had better sensory attributes including taste, color, texture and overall acceptance during the whole storage period. Consequently, CS films incorporated AKEO at 1.0% can be developed to be one packaging material for spiced beef. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. SDS of cas: 100-51-6. In this study, the aroma components of bead-shaped green teas were compared through headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/olfactometry (GC-MS/O) coupled with chemometrics. A total of 62 volatile compounds were identified in 16 green tea samples. Notably, comparison of GC-MS/O and odour activity values (OAV) results revealed that nonanal, decanal, (E)-2-nonenal, beta-ionone, and 1-octen-3-one were the most powerful aroma-active compounds that contributed to the aroma profile of the bead-shaped green teas. Furthermore, multivariate statistical techniques (such as principal component analysis, partial least squares-discriminant analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis) were used to characterise the bead-shaped green teas according to their geographical origin and the flavour characteristics of their volatile compounds. Additionally, the variable importance in the projection method was used to identify 20 volatile markers that could successfully distinguish bead-shaped green teas on the basis of three flavour characteristics. The results of the analysis revealed that HS-SPME and GC-MS/O coupled with chemometrics can provide an effective method for characterising and classifying bead-shaped green teas.

An efficient ruthenium-catalyzed tandem cyclization for the formation of C-N bond was developed by using hydrogen transfer reaction and intramolecular cyclization. This process relied on the efficient availability of nitroarenes and primary alcohols to form C-N bond by hydrogen transfer reaction. This method could be widely used in the synthesis of quinazolinone skeletons due to less waste, higher reaction efficiency and better functional groups tolerance. A series of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones derivatives were obtained with high production by using nitroarenes and primary alcohols as the substrates. Finally, based on the experimental results, a reasonable series reaction mechanism was proposed.

The effect of bio-imprinting and water activity on catalytic activities and the thermostability of lipases was investigated for transesterification using vinyl acetate and benzyl alcohol as substrates in ionic liquid, [C(n)mim][PF6] (n=4,6,8), and benzene. The catalytic activities were enhanced by imprinting in benzene and [C(4)mim][PF6], and the relations between the transesterification activities and the water activity in both solvents were approximately bell shaped. The reactivity of the transesterification in benzene was higher than that in [C(4)mim][PF6]. The effects of water activity and imprinting on the kinetic parameters in [C(4)mim][PF6] were examined. Without controlling the water content, the values of K-m,K-VA and K-m,K-BA (Michaelis constants of vinyl acetate and benzyl alcohol, respectively) decreased, and the values of V-m (maximum rate) increased by imprinting. On the other hand, by controlling the water content in the organic media, the values of V-m, K-m,K-VA, and K-m,K-BA increased by imprinting. The activities of lipase in ionic liquid are more strongly affected by water activity and imprinting than those in benzene. We observed effects of water activity on thermostability but none from imprinting.

Background and Aims Flowers emit a wide range of volatile compounds which can be critically important to interactions with pollinators or herbivores. Yet most studies of how the environment influences plant volatiles focus on leaf emissions, with little known about abiotic sources of variation in floral volatiles. Understanding phenotypic plasticity in floral volatile emissions has become increasingly important with globally increasing temperatures and changes in drought frequency and severity. Here quantitative relationships of floral volatile emissions to soil water content were analysed. Methods Plants of the sub-alpine herb Ipomopsis aggregata and hybrids with its closest congener were subjected to a progressive dry down, mimicking the range of soil moistures experienced in the field. Floral volatiles and leaf gas exchange were measured at four time points during the drought. Key Results As the soil dried, floral volatile emissions increased overall and changed in composition, from more 1,3-octadiene and benzyl alcohol to higher representation of some terpenes. Emissions of individual compounds were not linearly related to volumetric water content in the soil. The dominant compound, the monoterpene -pinene, made up the highest percentage of the scent mixture when soil moisture was intermediate. In contrast, emission of the sesquiterpene (E,E)–farnesene accelerated as the drought became more intense. Changes in floral volatiles did not track the time course of changes in photosynthetic rate or stomatal conductance. Conclusions This study shows responses of specific floral volatile organic compounds to soil moisture. The non-linear responses furthermore suggest that extreme droughts may have impacts that are not predictable from milder droughts. Floral volatiles are likely to change seasonally with early summer droughts in the Rocky Mountains, as well as over years as snowmelt becomes progressively earlier. Changes in water availability may have impacts on plant-animal interactions that are mediated through non-linear changes in floral volatiles.

The bromodomain and extraterminal domain (BET) family of epigenetic regulators comprises four proteins (BRD2, BRD3, BRD4, BRDT), each containing tandem bromodomains. To date, small molecule inhibitors of these proteins typically bind all eight bromodomains of the family with similar affinity, resulting in a diverse range of biological effects. To enable further understanding of the broad phenotype characteristic of pan-BET inhibition, the development of inhibitors selective for individual, or sets of, bromodomains within the family is required. In this regard, we report the discovery of a potent probe molecule possessing up to 150-fold selectivity for the N-terminal bromodomains (BD1s) over the C-terminal bromodomains (BD2s) of the BETs. Guided by structural information, a specific amino acid difference between BD1 and BD2 domains was targeted for selective interaction with chemical functionality appended to the previously developed I-BET151 scaffold. Data presented herein demonstrate that selective inhibition of BD1 domains is sufficient to drive anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects.

In this work, we developed a novel strategy to synthesize porous (alumino)silicate materials using a single structure-directing agent composed of an imidazole unit with a hydrophobic tail, namely, 1,2-dimethy1-3-hexadecy1-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide (C(16)dMImz). A wide range of products such as ordered mesoporous silicas, layered silica-alumina, and hierarchically porous mordenite zeolite were obtained by varying synthesis parameters such as temperature and aluminum concentration. By changing crystallization temperature, we could control the degree of silica condensation and tune the textural and morphological properties of the final materials. By varying the aluminum concentration in the gel, we can obtain mesoporous amorphous silica-alumina or crystalline mordenite zeolite with, respectively, weak and strong Bronsted acid sites. Obtained acidic silica-alumina materials displayed promising performance in catalytic reactions of linear paraffin hydroisomerization and Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene with benzyl alcohol.

This work reports a simple, metal free and cost-effective protocol for the preparation of tri substituted 1,3,5-triazine using graphene oxide as a carbo-catalyst. Substituted triazine can be synthesized in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, the use of graphene oxide as a catalyst results in a product free from metal traces. Recyclability study shows that it can be recycled up to six cycles without significant loss in catalytic activity. To show the scalability of the developed methodology, gram scale synthesis was also carried out.
