The morphology and size of Co-MOF-74 were effectively controlled by adjusting the water portion in DMF-H2O mixed solvent system, and six different Co-MOF-74 samples were successfully obtained. The water content can alter the deprotonation rate of the organic ligand and then change the nucleation rate of crystal, thus regulate morphology and size of Co-MOF-74. The discrepancy of morphology and size has significant effect on texture structure of Co-MOF-74 but without changing their composition. The formation mechanism of crystal growth was proposed by studying the change of reaction solution pH value. These samples exhibit morphology and size dependent catalytic activity in toluene oxidation. The flower-like sample has the best catalytic performance with 12.1% toluene conversion and 63.8% benzaldehyde selectivity. Additionally, the influence of reaction parameters on the catalytic oxidation reaction was also examined. Rearserch on the structure-property relationship of catalyst would be useful for rationally synthesizing novel MOF in heterogeneous catalysis.

This paper aimed to provide an insight into the mechanism of transdermal penetration of drug molecules with respect to their physicochemical properties, such as solubility (S), the presence of enantiomer (ET) and logarithm of octanol-water partition coefficient (log P), molecular weight (MW), and melting point (MP). Propionic acid derivatives were evaluated for their flux through full-thickness skin excised from hairless mice upon being delivered from silicone-based pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) matrices in the presence or absence of various enhancers. The skin fluxes of model compounds were calculated based on the data obtained using the method engaged with the diffusion cell system. The statistical design of experiments (DoE) based on the factorial approach was used to find variables that have a significant impact on the outcomes. For the prediction of skin flux, a quantitative equation was derived using the data-mining approach on the relationship between skin permeation of model compounds (similar to 125 mg/ml) and involved physicochemical variables. The most influential variables for the skin flux of propionic acid derivatives were the melting point (0.97) followed by the presence of enantiomer (0.95), molecular mass (0.93), log P values (0.86), and aqueous solubility (0.80). It was concluded that the skin flux of molecular compounds can be predicted based on the relationship between their physicochemical properties and the interaction with cofactors including additives and enhancers in the vehicles.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC x GC-TOF-MS) was combined with conventional mono-dimensional GC-MS to differentiate Croatian virgin olive oils (VOO) according to variety and geographical origin, based on the profile of volatile aroma compounds isolated by HS-SPME. More than 1000 compounds were detected after untargeted profiling and 256 were identified or tentatively identified, providing one of the most detailed profiles of volatile aroma compounds in VOO up to date. Among them, 131 volatile compounds were significantly different across monovarietal VOOs, while 60 were found useful for the discrimination according to geographical origin. Many major lipoxygenase and minor non-lipoxygenase-generated compounds were shown to have discriminating ability with respect to both factors. Multivariate statistical analysis extracted twenty-one volatile markers with the highest discriminant power for varietal differentiation. The approach reported may have practical application in better understanding, defining, managing, and communicating the varietal or geographical typicity of monovarietal VOOs.

Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction (MPVr) is a sustainable route for the chemoselective transformation of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes. However, tailoring ZrO2 catalysts for improved surface-active sites and maximum performance in the MPV reaction is still a challenge. Here, we synthesized mesoporous zirconia (ZrO2) and metal-doped zirconia (M_ZrO2, M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni). The incorporation of metal dopants into zirconia’s crystal framework alters its physico-chemical properties such as surface area and total acidity-basicity. The prepared catalysts were evaluated in the MPVr using 2-propanol as a hydrogen donor under mild reaction conditions. The catalysts’ remarkable reactivity depends mainly on their surface mesostructure’s intrinsic properties rather than the specific surface area. Cr_ZrO2, which is stable and sustainable, presented superior activity and 100% selectivity to unsaturated alcohols. The synergistic effect between Cr and Zr species in the binary oxide facilitated the Lewis acidity-induced performance of the Cr_ZrO2 catalyst. Our work presents the first innovative application of a well-designed mesoporous Cr_ZrO2 in the green synthesis of unsaturated alcohols with exceptional reactivity.

Recently, short synthetic peptides have gained interest as targeting agents in the design of site-specific nanomedicines. In this context, our work aimed at developing new tools for the diagnosis and/or therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by grafting the hepatotropic George Baker (GB) virus A (GBVA10-9) and Plasmodium circumsporozoite protein (CPB)-derived peptides to the biocompatible poly(benzyl malate), PMLABe. We successfully synthesized PMLABe derivatives end-functionalized with peptides GBVA10-9, CPB, and their corresponding scrambled peptides through a thiol/maleimide reaction. The corresponding nanoparticles (NPs), varying by the nature of the peptide (GBVA10-9, CPB, and their scrambled peptides) and the absence or presence of poly(ethylene glycol) were also successfully formulated using nanoprecipitation technique. NPs were further characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), highlighting a diameter lower than 150 nm, a negative surface charge, and a more or less spherical shape. Moreover, a fluorescent probe (DiD Oil) has been encapsulated during the nanoprecipitation process. Finally, preliminary in vitro internalisation assays using HepaRG hepatoma cells demonstrated that CPB peptide-functionalized PMLABe NPs were efficiently internalized by endocytosis, and that such nanoobjects may be promising drug delivery systems for the theranostics of HCC.

Because H2O decreases the acidity of sulfonic acid-based catalysts and initiates catalytic side reactions, the catalytic activity and selectivity of these catalysts are often unsatisfactory in many reactions that generate H2O as a byproduct. Herein, for the first time, hydrophobic acid-functionalized biochar is prepared by a new route based on a two-step diazo grafting method using 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid as the sulfonated agent and 4-tert-butylaniline as the hydrophobic agent. The acid density and hydrophobicity can be easily regulated by the amounts of benzenesulfonic acid and tert-butylbenzene groups, respectively. The resulting catalysts have a large specific surface area of 400-700 m(2)/g, high acid density of greater than 2.0 mmol/g, and strong hydrophobicity with an H2O contact angle of up to 136 degrees. Compared with Amberlyst-15 and H2SO4-sulfonated biochar, the hydrophobic acidic biochar exhibits higher activity and selectivity in the alkylation of 4-ethylphenol with phenylmethanol and of 2-methylfuran with cyclic ketones (cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone) for the production of high-density biofuels. The successful preparation of the hydrophobic acidic biochar not only results in an efficient catalyst for reaction systems in which H2O has a deleterious effect but also paves a way for the functional modification of carbonaceous materials.

Catalytic ozone decomposition on various manganese oxide-based catalysts was investigated at 40 degrees C for ozone concentrations in the range 2-20 ppm in dry and humid conditions. Ozone conversion efficiency shows a slight dependence with ozone concentration, slightly decreasing when ozone concentration increases. A strong but reversible inhibiting effect was observed when water is present in the gas phase likely due to the reversible adsorption of water on ozone reaction sites. Whatever the catalyst used, the same behavior was observed which is characterized by a transient decrease in efficiency at the beginning of the reaction until reaching the steady-state. A kinetic model was developed, based on the mechanism of ozone decomposition proposed by Oyama and co-workers, allowing us to properly describe the reaction behavior of ozone on manganese oxide catalysts for variable initial reactant concentrations. Additionally, the transient behavior of the MnO2 catalysts experimentally observed at the beginning of the ozone decomposition reaction was kinetically described for the first time, as well as the steady-state.
