The developed methodology rendered the use of carboxylic acids as a direct surrogate of primary amines, for the synthesis of primary ureas, secondary/tertiary ureas, O/S-carbamates, benzoyl ureas, amides, and N-formyls, exploiting the Curtius reaction. This approach has a potential to provide a diversified library of N-containing compounds, starting from a single carboxylic acid, based on the selection of the nucleophile.

Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) are the least studied allotropes of carbon despite their discovery before nanotubes and fullerenes. CNOs are multilayered fullerenes concentrically arranged one inside the other resembling the structure of an onion. Typically, their size average ranges from 2 to 50 nm in diameter. Recently, CNOs have gained attention in different fields because of their interesting chemical and physical properties. However, their lack of dispersibility in common solvents due to strong intermolecular interactions limits their applications. Here, we studied the dispersion behavior of CNOs prepared by nanodiamond annealing in 20 solvents of different polarities. Dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the dispersion of CNOs in the different solvents. The solvents were classified as good or bad solvents to determine the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) of the CNOs using various optimization approaches. The calculated HSPs (delta(D), delta(p) and delta(H)) were further used to predict the CNO dispersion behavior in other solvents with a very good agreement between expected and observed dispersibilities. Our results will be helpful to estimate the behavior of CNOs in other solvents or their interaction with other materials with known HSPs. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Poly[epsilon-CL-b-(MMA-comb-EMA)]comb-type polymers were synthesized by ATRP and epsilon-caprolactone macroinitiator and macromonomer. Methyl methacrylate macromonomer was synthesized from acylation reaction of methacryloyl chloride with PMMA ended 7-hydroxy coumarin. The macroinitiator was prepared from the reaction of chlorine acetyl chloride P(epsilon-CL). The synthesized polymers were characterized by FT-IR, H-1-NMR and C-13-NMR techniques. The average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymers were measured by GPC method. Thermal properties of samples were studied by DSC/TGA techniques. Dielectric and Ac conductivity measurements were performed. Dielectric constant (epsilon’), dielectric loss factor (epsilon|) and conductivity behaviors of comb-type polymer were measured at room temperature between the frequency of 100-2000 Hz and over the temperature range 303-413 K at 1 kHz reported as compared with each other. Besides, their effects on the electrical properties by doping with EuCl3 for some of the comb copolymers were and were investigated. The activation energy (E-a) was calculated from conductivity. We reported it was determined that the (epsilon’) and (epsilon|) values decreased with increasing frequency. There are also many application areas for comb polymers for example; nanotechnology, medicine. The aim of this study is to synthesize comb-type copolymers in different compositions and to investigate their electrical properties.

Benzyl alcohol oxidation by one-and two-electron oxidized copper(II)-salen complexes with the para-substituted phenolate moieties, [Cu(R-salen)](n+) (H2R-salen = N,N’-bis(3-tert-butyl-5-R-salicylidene)ethylenediamine; R = methoxy (MeO), methylthio (MeS) groups; n = 1, 2) was kinetically investigated under the conditions with large excess of the substrate in comparison to the copper complex concentration (C-BnOH >> C-Cu). The one-and two-electron oxidized complexes [Cu(R-salen)](n+) (n = 1 and 2) oxidized benzyl alcohol irrespective of R-groups to generate benzaldehyde and the Cu(R-salen) species in stoichiometries of complex : substrate = 2 : 1 and 1 : 1, respectively. Kinetic analyses for benzyl alcohol oxidation by the one-electron oxidized complexes [Cu(R-salen)](+) revealed significantly different kinetics depending on R-groups: one-step pseudo second-order kinetics was assigned for R = MeO, while two-step pseudo first-order kinetics was suitable for R = MeS. The reaction kinetics by two-electron oxidized complexes [Cu(R-salen)](2+) were assigned to two-and three-step first-order processes for R = MeO and MeS, respectively, in which the first step consists of parallel pathways of complex : substrate = 1:1 and 1:2 reactions to generate the one-electron oxidized complex intermediates irrespective of the R-group. However, the following steps were different depending on R-groups. Associating with the results of kinetic isotope effect (KIE) measurements, the reaction mechanisms were discussed and proposed.

Novel layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were prepared by a co-precipitation method and characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As-prepared LDH derived catalysts were first evaluated in the gas-phase conversion of methanol. The results indicate that LDH derived materials act as selective catalysts towards dimethyl ether (DME), methane or light olefins formation, depending on their chemical composition. For instance, CuAlOx showed a high selectivity in DME up to 88 %, whilst CuCoOx converted methanol to CH4, C3H8 and DME. NiFeOx allowed achieving a full methanol conversion selectively into CH4 during at least 1800 min. Besides, Ni and Cu-LDHs were successfully tested in the liquid phase benzyl alcohol (BzOH) oxidation leading to more than 50 % conversion. NiAl-LDH appeared as the best catalyst for benzaldehyde production with a 71 % conversion and 100 % selectivity.

A series of novel 3-nitro-4-chromanones were synthesized and their in vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated on castration-resistant prostate cancer cell (CRPC) lines using the sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. The amide derivatives showed more potent antitumor activity than their corresponding ester derivatives. Most of the tested compounds showed less toxicity towards human fibroblasts (HAF) compared with the tumor cell lines. The optimal compound 36 possessed much more potent antiproliferative activity than the positive compound cisplatin. The colony formation, cell cycle distribution, apoptosis, transwell migration and wound healing assays of 36 were performed on CRPC cell lines.

The aim of this work was to evaluate how the use of mixed cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lachancea thermotolerans indigenous yeast strains influences the volatile composition of wine. Multivariate curve resolution (MCR) method has been applied to data analysis. Five fermentation trials were carried out: three co-inoculated with L. thermotolerans: S. cerevisiae, at the ratio of 50:1, 20:1 and 5:1 respectively, and two with a pure culture of each strain. A must from sun-dried Pedro Ximenez grapes was employed. Volatile composition was determined by dual sequential stir bar sorptive extraction, followed by GC-MS analysis. MCR provided 171 peaks. Results in co-inoculation fermentations revealed that the majority compounds obtained in each case followed the same trend as that observed for the pure culture of the strain that was present in a higher proportion. Finally, 50:1 and 20:1 seemed to be the best proportions to obtain a wine with a quality volatile profile.
