The production of esters is largely influenced by functional gene expressions and the nutrition status of grape must. In this study, the effects of unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) mixture (including linoleic acid, oleic acid and linolenic acid) on volatile esters of wine fermented with T73::ATF1 (overexpressing ATFI-encoded alcohol acetyltransferases) and T73::EEB (overexpressing EEB1-encoded acyl-CoA: ethanol O-acyltransferases) were investigated in alcoholic fermentation, respectively. The inoculation of T73::ATF1 into UFAs added juice significantly increased acetate esters production (ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate and phenylethyl acetate) compared to in the control juice. The promotion on ethyl esters biosynthesis was also found in T73::EEB1 when supple. mented with low level of UFAs, but the function became inhibition with the further increment of UFAs concentration. The levels of higher alcohols, medium fatty acids and the major genes expression (ADH1, BAT1, PDC1, ACC1, FAS1 and LAH1) were changed and varied among the both strains. These results indicated that UFAs can modulate the effect of overexpressing ATF1 and EEB1 on esters biosynthesis by influencing the substrates availability. The combination of increasing ATF1 and EEB1 expressions and modulating UFAs content is a potential means to increase the esters production and improve the aromatic quality of wines.

Poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propansulfonic acid) (p(AMPS) hydrogels were synthesized via free radical polymerization reaction technique under mild reaction conditions. The chemical structure of synthesized p(AMPS) anionic macroporous hydrogel was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Synthesized hydrogels were used as template for in situ metal nanoparticle preparation by using Ag(CH3COO) in H2O. Metal nanoparticles embedded p(AMPS)-Ag were visualized by TEM. The metal content of composites was estimated via atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). This metal-nanoparticle porous hydrogel composite was employed in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and H-2 generation from hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH4). The activation energies, enthalpy, and entropy for 4-NP reduction and NaBH4 hydrolysis catalyzed by composite were determined. P(AMPS)-Ag composite was also used as catalyst in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols by emphasizing the effects of different parameters such as temperature, substituent effect, etc. Finally, the catalysts were easily recovered from the reaction media and it could be re-used for the other four runs without significant loss of activity.

A simple and fast method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 75 plastic food contact material (FCM) in liquid food simulants, at levels of a few ng g-1. The method employs an optimised salt-assisted liquid-liquid extraction for all EU-regulated ethanol/H2O food simulants, in the presence of 10% NaCl (simulants A and C) or 5% NaCl (simulant D1), and dichloromethane as the extracting solvent. Gas chromatography with triple-quad MS operating in multiple reaction monitoring acquisition was used, applying isotope dilution with selected deuterated compounds. Adequate sensitivity was demonstrated for all analytes. The results also showed sufficient accuracy for the majority of substances, with recoveries of 70-120% and repeatability (expressed as relative standard deviations, RSDs) smaller than 15%. The method was applied to the analysis of FCM multilayer items after undergoing migration testing according to the specifications of the current EU legislation in force.

Herein, we designed and synthesized an SBA-15 supported 1-methyl-2-azaadamanane N-oxyl (1-Me-AZADO) and investigated its catalytic performance for selective oxidation of alcohols under Anelli’s conditions. The first example of immobilization of 1-Me-AZADO was very important to advance the oxgenation effectively because this supported N-oxyl has excellent catalytic activity for oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds, and more importantly, it can be conveniently recovered and reused at least 6 times without significant effect on its catalytic efficiency.

We report on the preparation of a series of phosphorusnitrogen donor ligand complexes [M(CO)(4)(PN)], where M = Cr, Mo, W and PN is 2-(diphenylphosphino)-ethylamine. The organometallic compounds were readily obtained upon reacting the respective metal hexacarbonyls with equimolar amounts of the pertinent ligand in the presence of tetraethylammonium bromide. The PN-ligated metal carbonyls were fully characterized by standard spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography. The ability of the title compounds to function as homogeneous hydrogenation catalysts was probed in the reduction of acetophenone and benzaldehyde derivatives to yield the corresponding alcohols. The reaction setup was easily assembled by simply combining the components in the autoclave on the bench outside an inert-gas-operated glovebox system

The development of cheap and robust heterogeneous catalysts for the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction is desirable due to the difficulties in product isolation and catalyst recovery associated with the traditional use of homogeneous catalysts for MPV. Herein, we show that microwave heated gamma-Al(2)O(3)can be used for the reduction of aldehydes to alcohols. The reaction is efficient and has a broad substrates scope (19 entries). The products can be isolated by simple filtration, and the catalyst can be regenerated. With the use of microwave heating, we can direct the heating to the catalyst rather than to the whole reaction medium. Furthermore, DFT was used to study the reaction mechanism, and we can conclude that a dual-site mechanism is operative where the aldehyde and 2-propoxide are situated on two adjacent Al sites during the reduction. Additionally, volcano plots were used to rationalize the reactivity of Al(2)O(3)in comparison to other metal oxides.

In this study, benzyl benzoate was successfully synthesized via enzymatic acylation using three immobilized enzymes as biocatalysts. Different acyl donors (benzoic acid and benzoic anhydride), operation regimes (batch, fed-batch), mixing modes (conventional mechanical stirring and ultrasound), process parameters (temperature, substrate molar ratio of acyl donor to acyl acceptor), presence or absence of solvents, enzyme amount and type were evaluated. Benzoic acid is a solid that is difficult to solubilize and, thus, was not efficient as acyl donor for the synthesis of benzyl benzoate. On the other hand, benzoic anhydride was very effective for the acylation of benzyl benzoate, and the presence of an excess of benzyl alcohol was essential to ensure the solute-solvent intermolecular attractions and good substrate solubilization, allowing the ester synthesis to be performed in the absence of organic solvents. The ultrasound was effective in increasing increase the initial reaction rate and the final conversion (88 %). However, the Lipozyme TL-IM and RM-IM supports were damaged, and the reuse was unfeasible. The batch and fed-batch approaches in conventional stirring ensured high conversions of 92 and 90 %, respectively, for batch (anhydride: alcohol 1:6) and fed-batch (1:3) using the Lipozyme TL-IM as biocatalyst. The controlled addition of the anhydride (fed-batch) allowed the reduction of alcohol molar ratio but decreased the reaction rates, and the maximum conversions were reached only after 24 h, while the batch approach had 92 % of conversion after 6 h. The yield of benzyl benzoate was high at 6 wt.% of enzyme, low temperature (50 degrees C), and simple reactor operation (batch). Results show the feasibility of the synthesis of benzyl benzoate via acylation using a green process that may be an alternative route to the chemical synthesis.

Genome sequencing of environmental bacteria allows identification of biosynthetic gene clusters encoding unusual combinations of enzymes that produce unknown natural products. We identified a pathway in which a ribosomally synthesized small peptide serves as a scaffold for nonribosomal peptide extension and chemical modification.
