In this study, Fe3O4@graphite sheets were successfully synthesized in one-pot via a simple hydrothermal method and subsequently employed as an effective electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). HER is the crucial electrochemical reactions for the next-generation energy devices. Hydrogen is a clean and renewable energy resource and is one of the most promising candidates for fuel. The shape of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles is nearly spherical with a size of about 10 nm and the Fe3O4 nanoparticles distributed evenly on the graphite sheets. The synthesized Fe3O4@graphite sheets have a specific surface area about 125 m(2) g(-1) with slit-shaped open micro/mesopores. Overall the physicochemical characterization techniques have confirmed the formation, structural stability, and elemental composition of synthesized Fe3O4@graphite sheets. The resulting Fe3O4@graphite sheets were demonstrated towards electrocatalytic HER in 0.1 M KOH solution. The synthesized Fe3O4@graphite sheets delivered the lowest Tafel slope (78 mV dec(-1)) and overpotential (-120 mV(RHE)) at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrate that HER are highly favorable on the Fe3O4@graphite sheets due to the relatively low charge transfer resistance. The experimental results reveal that Fe3O4@graphite sheets possess remarkable electrocatalytic HER activities and are highly stable. The good electrocatalytic activity of Fe3O4@graphite sheet can be ascribed to the synergistic effect between Fe3O4 and graphite sheets, which can facilitate charge transfer kinetics to enhance electrocatalytic HER performance.

Selective hydrogenation of biomass oxygenates to valuable chemicals is a desired catalytic process from energy and environment. Traditional catalysts for selective hydrogenation of biomass oxygenates are prepared from co-impregnation or co-precipitation method. In this work, 93.6% of a 1,4-pentanediol yield as well as high stability was obtained on CeO(2 )supported cobalt and copper species (Cu3Co1/CeO2) by pyrolyzing a MOF composite from one-pot synthesis. Comparison showed that catalytic performances on Cu3Co1/CeO2 were higher than most literature sources, Cu3Co1/CeO2-CP and individual Co-0 or Cu-0 on CeO2. Additionally, Cu3Co1/CeO2 also presents the yields of higher than 92.5% for gamma-valerolactone, furfural, benzaldehyde, acetophenone and phenol to corresponding alcohol products. Characterization results indicated high catalytic results are derived from the coexistence of highly dispersed Cu-0 and strong Lewis acid, copper and cobalt oxides, on Cu3Co1/CeO2 . Redox support CeO2 facilitates dispersion of cobalt while the synergistic effect on dispersion and reduction of cobalt and copper achieves high efficient hydrogenation of biomass oxygenates. Leishmania braziliensis is one of the pathogenic agents of cutaneous and mucocutanoeous leishmaniasis. There are no validated vaccines to prevent the infection and the treatment relies on drugs that often present severe side effects, which justify the efforts to find new potential antileishmanial drugs. An alternative to promote the discovery of new drugs would be the association of different chemical groups of bioactive compounds. Here we describe the synthesis and bioactivity evaluation against L. braziliensis of cinnamic acid derivatives possessing isobenzofuranone and 1,2,3-triazole functionalities. We tested 25 compounds at 10 mu M concentration against extracellular promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes during macrophage infection. Most compounds were more active against amastigotes than to promastigotes. The derivatives (E)-3-oxo-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-yl-(3,4,5-trimethoxy) cinnamate (5c), (1-(3,4-difluorobenzyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl cinnamate (9g), and (1-(2-bromobenzyl)-1H-1,2,3triazol-4-yl)methyl cinnamate (91) were the most effective presenting over 80% toxicity on L braziliensis amastigotes. While compound 5c is a cinnamate with an isobenzofuranone portion, 9g and 9l are triazolic cinnamic acid derivatives. The action of these compounds was comparable to amphotericin B used as positive control. Ultrastructural analysis revealed that 5c-treated parasites showed impaired cytokinesis and apoptosis triggering. Blossom blight caused by Botrytis cinerea is one among the most devastating diseases that cause complete post-harvest loss in flower crops. The present study focuses on the development of effective bioformulation towards suppression of blossom blight and plant growth promotion in rose. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (VB2) and Bacillus subtilis (AP) effectively inhibited mycelial growth of B. cinerea in vitro. Genome screening of VB2 and AP revealed the presence of antimicrobial peptide genes including, ituD, ipa14, bacA, bacD, srfA, sfP, spaC, spaS responsible for the biosynthesis of antibiotics such as iturin, bacilysin, bacillomycin, surfactin and subtilin. Further, the presence of volatile antifungal compounds in the bacterial secretome was identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. Upon treatment, AP accelerated the metabolite profile of the plants and a rise in peak area of antifungal compounds such as, pentadecanoic acid, n-hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid (stearic acid) and tetradecanoic acid was observed. In vitro, VB2 produced maximum indole acetic acid (9.17 mu g/ml) and gibberellic acid (8.20 mu g/ml) in nutrient broth. Under field conditions, foliar spray of VB2 at 0.5% (5 ml/l), four times at weekly interval suppressed blossom blight incidence (64% reduction over control) and also promoted yield. Future research towards development of an effective bioformulation with extended shelf life will aid in the management of various fungal, bacterial and viral diseases in different crop plants.

The anticancer mechanism of NO is difficult to study owing to its short lifetime and high reactivity. Thus, a theranostic anticancer NO donor assembled with NO on-demand release abilities, accurate lysosome location capabilities and signal feedback behavior was developed. Profiting from the theranostic properties, the specific mechanism was comprehensively studied. Spectral and cell imaging studies revealed that the as prepared NO donors could release NO in solution or within cancer cells. Fluorescence co-dyeing experiments demonstrated that Mo-Nap-NO entered lysosomes specifically and disrupted them after being triggered by light. Upon irradiation with 460 nm visible light, both the donors demonstrated considerable in vitro anticancer effects. A further mechanistic study showed that after entering the lysosome and being triggered by 460 nm irradiation, NO ruptured the lysosome, resulting in the release of cathepsin D into the cytosol, which activated the caspase3 mediated apoptosis pathway.

CuO-WO3-ZrO2, catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method. Structures and surface properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction ( XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray fluorescence( XRF), N-2 physisorption, temperature programmed hydrogen reduction (H-2-TPR) , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Addition of WO3 into CuO-ZrO2 induced the transformation of ZrO2 from monoclinic to tetragonal phases, improved the dispersion of CuO species, changed the acid-base properties of the catalysts as well as the catalyst textural features such as surface area and the average pore diameter. As a consequence, the catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol was greatly promoted by the introduction of WO3. For the optimal catalyst containing 10% (mass fraction) CuO and 18% (mass fraction) WO3, the conversion of benzaldehyde and the selectivity to benzyl alcohol reached 94. 76% and 92. 03%, respectively.

This study investigated the accumulation of esters in three hybrid grape cultivars during berry development under two vintages to elucidate the differentiation on their esters biosynthesis. Results showed ‘Moldova’ showed lower esters content than ‘Campbell Early’ and ‘Catawba’ resulting from its limited AAT gene expression and 20 different encoded amino acids. The volatile esters compositions of ‘Campbell Early’ and ‘Catawba’ in both vintages were different. Catalytic oxidation of alcohols containing heteroatoms with molecular oxygen is usually rather challenging, as transition metal catalysts are easily deactivated by heteroatoms. In contrast to conventional results, herein facile oxidation of 2-pyridinemethanol with dioxgyen was observed over simple vanadium catalysts including VOSO4 or VO(acac)(2), which seemed much easier than that of benzyl alcohol. 2-Pyridinemethanol could coordinate with the vanadium center, which would promote oxidation of 2-pyridinemethanol itself, rather than deactivate vanadium catalysts. This study would provide a new clue to develop efficient catalysts for transformations of heterocyclic compounds.

The irradiation of red light-emitting-diode light (lambda = 660 nm) to 3-acyl-2-methoxyindolizines in the presence of a catalytic amount of methylene blue triggered the photooxidation of the indolizine ring, resulting in a nearly quantitative release of alcohols or carboxylic acids within a few minutes. The method was applicable for photouncaging various functional molecules such as a carboxylic anticancer drug and a phenolic fluorescent dye from the corresponding indolizine conjugates, including an insulin- indolizine-dye conjugate.

Dehydrogenative amide bond formation from alcohols and amines has been regarded as an atom-economic and sustainable process. Among various catalytic systems, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based Ru catalytic systems have attracted growing interest due to the outstanding properties of NHCs as ligands. Herein, an NHC/Ru complex (1) was prepared and its structure was further confirmed with X-ray crystallography. In the presence of Cs2CO3, two NHC/Ru-based catalytic systems were disclosed to be active for this amide synthesis. System A, which did not contain any added ligand, required a catalyst loading of 1.00 mol%. Interestingly, improved catalytic performance was realized by the addition of an NHC precursor (L). Optimization of the amounts of L and other conditions gave rise to system B, a much more potent system with the Ru loading as low as 0.25 mol%. Moreover, an NHC-Ru-carbonate complex 6 was identified from the refluxing toluene of 1 and Cs2CO3, and further investigations revealed that 6 was an important intermediate for this catalytic reaction. Based on the above results, we claimed that the role of Cs2CO3 was to facilitate the formation of key intermediate 6. On the other hand, it provided the optimized basicity for the selective amide formation.
