An efficient, convenient and novel method for the selective mono N-arylation of primary O-alkyl thiocarbamates and primary O-alkyl carbamates with aryl halides and arylboronic acids in the presence of a recyclable magnetic Cu(II) nanocatalyst is described. A variety of mono N-arylated O-alkyl thiocarbamates and O-alkyl carbamates were prepared in good to excellent yields with a broad range of aryl coupling partners. The magnetic nanocatalyst can be easily recovered with an external magnetic field and reused at least five times without noticeable leaching or loss of its catalytic activity. This costeffective and eco-friendly methodology has some other advantages, such as easy preparation of the catalyst, simple workup procedure, and easy purification, which makes this protocol interesting for the users in various fields of pharmacology and biotechnology systems.

Photocatalytic selective oxidation reactions hold great promise for the design of high-value-added organic intermediates, but many of these reactions suffer from low conversion efficiency and selectivity due to uncontrollable oxidation processes. In view of using photogenerated reactive oxygen species as the key oxidant in a selective oxidation reaction, we propose that a highly selective oxidation reaction can be achieved by modulating the corresponding photocatalytic molecular oxygen (O-2) activation processes. Using cubic indium sulfide (beta-In2S3) nanosheets as a model system, we show that the charge carriers involved in O-2 activation can be optimized with the introduction of surface S vacancies. Benefiting from the enhanced charge separation and transfer processes, the In2S3 nanosheets with S vacancies could simultaneously activate O-2 into superoxide radicals via electron transfer under visible-light irradiation to display outstanding activity for the selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes with high conversion and selectivity. This study offers a new strategy to optimize photocatalytic selective oxidation reactions.

Photocatalytic membrane coupled to biodegradation offers potential for degrading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in photocatalytic membrane biofilm reactor. An intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation reactor was operated in continuous operation for 500 days to treat simulated waste gas containing toluene. Toluene removal efficiency obtained 99%, with the elimination capacity of 550 g m(-3).h(-1). Membrane photocatalysis coupled to biodegradation was created to improve toluene removal from 11 to 20%. The dominant genera were Lysinibacillus, Hydrogenophctga, Pseudomonas at 30 d, Rudaea, Dongia, Litorilinea at 230 d xyl, Tod, Tcb, Bed, Tmo, Thu, Tou, Dmp, Cat were functional genes of toluene metabolism, as shown by16S rDNA and metagenomic sequencing. Photocatalysis destroyed part of the toluene into biodegradable intermediates that were immediately mineralized by microorganisms in biofilm, some toluene was directly degraded by toluene degrading bacterial community into carbon dioxide and water. The novel hybrid photocatalytic membrane biofilm reactor is a cost-effective and robust alternative to VOCs treatment.

A variety of inorganic and organic nanosheets with characteristic structures and properties can be synthesized through exfoliation of layered materials. However, in general, immense time and efforts are required for exploration of exfoliation conditions and characterization of nanosheets. In addition, it is challenging to improve the yield of nanosheets obtained through exfoliation. Here a materials-informatics-assisted high-yield synthesis of nanosheets is proposed, which does not require experience and intuition. Layered composites containing inorganic layers and interlayer organic guests are delaminated into nanosheets in a variety of dispersion media. First, an experimental screening is performed to find efficient exfoliation conditions and obtain a training dataset for the informatics approach. Sparse modeling is then used facilitating the extraction of important factors predicting the yield of nanosheets. High-yield (up to approximate to 50%) synthesis of nanosheets is demonstrated in unknown systems in a minimum number of experiments. The yield is higher than those typically reported for layered materials. It is expected that the effective combination has potentials for not only discovery of compounds but also structure control of materials.

Cyanobacteria are model photosynthetic prokaryotic organisms often used in biotechnology to produce biofuels including alcohols. The effect of alcohols on cyanobacterial cell physiology and specifically on membrane fluidity is poorly understood. Previous research on various primary aliphatic alcohols found that alcohols with a short hydrocarbon chain (C-1-C-3) do not affect expression of genes related to membrane physical state. In addition, less water-soluble alcohols with a hydrocarbon chain longer than C-8 are found to have a reduced ability to reach cellular membranes hence do not drastically change membrane physical state or induce expression of stress-responsive genes. Therefore, hexan-1-ol (C-6) is suggested to have the most profound effect on cyanobacterial membrane physical state. Here, we studied the effects of hexan-1-ol on the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 transcriptome. The transcriptome data obtained is compared to the previously reported analysis of gene expression induced by benzyl alcohol and butan-1-ol. The set of genes whose expression is induced after exposure to all three studied alcohols is identified. The expression under alcohol stress for several general stress response operons is analyzed, and examples of antisense interactions of RNA are investigated.

A simple gram-scale method for the preparation of esters and dialkylamides of 2-(fluoro/iodo)-2H -azirine-2-carboxylic acids via the halogen exchange (Halex) reaction of 2-bromo-substituted analogues is reported. The method operates with inexpensive and safe reagents-, Bu4NF and potassium iodide, providing high product yields. Alternatively, 2-fluoro-2H-azirine-2-carboxylates can be prepared from 2-iodo- and 2-chloro-analogues. The latter compounds can be obtained in practically quantitative yield by treating the 2-iodo- and 2-bromo-2H-azirine-2-carboxylic esters with Bu4NCl.

We recently developed a novel chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed dynamic kinetic enantioselective acylation (DKEA) and dynamic kinetic diastereoselective acylation (DKDA) of Achmatowicz rearrangement products to generate useful intermediates for the further synthesis of carbohydrates. Ethnopharmacological relevance: Oryeong-san (ORS) is a traditional formula that has long been used for the treatment of dysfunctions of body fluids and electrolyte homeostasis in Korea, China and Japan. Recent reports have shown that ORS may suppress hypertension by controlling the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in the kidney, but its action mechanism has not been well defined. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to decipher the ORS mechanisms in the treatment of hypertension using a systems pharmacology approach. Materials and methods: The compounds of ORS were obtained from the TM-MC (database of medicinal materials and chemical compounds in Northeast Asian traditional medicine), and the drug-likeness (DL) and oral bioavailability (OB) of the compounds were evaluated. The potential targets of the compounds were identified using various pharmacology databases. To analyze the mechanisms of the ORS for hypertension, a Compound-Target Disease (C-T-D) network was established with respect to the genes related to hypertension. Results: A screening evaluation of the DL and OB of the ORS compounds identified a list of 232 active compounds. The pharmacological activity of the targets was investigated by exploring the interaction network between the compounds and the targets. Analysis of the interactions between the compounds and the hypertension related targets revealed that 14 ORS compounds regulate the RAAS and vasoconstrictors in the kidney. Conclusions: This study used the systems pharmacology approach to decipher the mechanisms of action of ORS for the treatment of hypertension. When hypertension drugs and ORS are used in combination for treatment, possible side effects should be considered because most hypertension drugs are related to the RAAS. The results of this study may provide clues to not only analyze the pharmacological activity of ORS for the treatment of hypertension but other diseases as well.
