Malylglutamate, a newly identified metabolite in earthworms, was synthesized using a traditional peptide coupling approach for assembling the amide from protected malate and glutamate precursors. The proposed structure (1) and a diastereomer were synthesized, but their NMR spectra did not match the natural sample. Further analysis of the natural sample using HMBC spectroscopy suggested an alternative attachment of the malyl moiety, and beta-malylglutamate (2) diastereomers were synthesized, L,L-2 and D,D-2. NMR spectra were an excellent match with the natural sample, and chiral-phase chromatography was employed to identify (-)-beta-L-malyl-L-glutamate (2) as the isomer native to Eisenia fetida.

Chemical ionization of organic compounds with negligible vapor pressures (VP) is achieved at atmospheric pressure when the proximal sample is exposed to corona discharge. The vapor-phase analyte is produced through a reactive olfaction process, which is determined to include electrostatic charge induction in the proximal condensed-phase sample, resulting in the liberation of free particles. With no requirement for physical contact, a new contained nano-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (nAPCI) source was developed that allowed direct mass spectrometry analysis of complex mixtures at a sample consumption rate less than nmol/min. The contained nAPCI source was applied to analyze a wide range of samples including the detection of 1 ng/mL cocaine in serum and 200 pg/mL caffeine in raw urine, as well as the differentiation of chemical composition of perfumes and beverages. Polar (e.g., carminic acid; estimated VP 5.1 x 10(-25) kPa) and nonpolar (e.g., vitamin D2; VP 8.5 x 10(-11) kPa) compounds were successfully ionized by the contained nAPCI ion source under ambient conditions, with the corresponding ion types of 78 other organic compounds characterized.

1,2-Ethylene-bis(para-methyl pyridinium) dichromate, (C14H18N2) [Cr2O7], is used as a new oxidizing agent in conversion of some alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl compounds in CH3CN solvent and also under solvent-free conditions. In both procedures, high conversion percentages are observed. However, a much shorter reaction time is achieved in solvent-free conditions. For allylic alcohols, the C=C bond is not oxidized and the examined saturated alcohol in this work (i.e. cyclo-hexanol) remains intact, which illustrates the mild nature of reagent used. The structure of the reagent is investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The C-H center dot center dot center dot O and O center dot center dot center dot pi interactions are the most important features of crystal packing, which are visualized by the Hirshfeld surface map.

Different synthetic routes have been developed to obtain the aqua complex trans-[Ru-II(trpy)(pypz-H)(OH2)](PF6)(2), Ru6. This complex, together with the chlorido intermediate complexes cis- and trans-[(RuCl)-Cl-II(pypz-H)(trpy)](+), Ru5a and Ru5b, have been fully characterized by analytical, spectroscopic, and electrochemical methods. Furthermore, the trans-Ru5b complex has been characterized in the solid state through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Herein a new Ru-phosphine complex (1) with molecular formula [RuL(PPh3)Cl-2] is reported where L is a redox active pincer ligand 2,6-bis(phenylazo)pyridine. The isolated complex has been characterized by usual spectroscopic techniques including single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis. Complex 1 efficiently catalyzes aerobic oxidation of a wide range of primary and secondary benzylic, allylic, heterocyclic, alicyclic alcohols under mild conditions and is found to be superior over several other Ru (0, +2 and + 3), Ru-H and Ru-PPh3 catalysts. Mechanistic studies indicate that a transient Ru-H intermediate is formed in the catalytic cycle which gets switched into a Ru-hydrazo intermediate via hydrogen-walking mechanism. The catalyst is regenerated by aerial oxidation producing H2O2 as a by-product.

The synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical and photophysical properties of the phosphonate-derivatized carbazole (CBZ) and boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) chromophores in the dyes, BODIPY(CBZ)(2)PO3H2 (8) and BODIPY(Tol)(2)PO3H2 (7), are described. The oxide-bound dyes have been explored as light absorbers in dyesensitized photoelectrosynthesis cell (DSPEC) applications. The BODIPY-CBZ phosphonate ester (6) features a broad, intense UV-visible absorption spectrum with absorptions at 297 and 650 nm that arise from mixed transitions at the CBZ and BODIPY units. Electrochemical measurements on BODIPY(CBZ)(2)Br (4) in 0.1 M [nBu(4)N] [PF6] in dichloromethane, vs normal hydrogen electrode (NHE), reveal reversible oxidations at 1.19 and 1.41 V and a reversible reduction at -0.59 V. On indium tin oxide (ITO) and TiO2, a reversible one-electron oxidation appears for 7 at 0.86 and 0.90 V vs NHE in dichloromethane, respectively, which demonstrates the redox stability on metal oxide surfaces. The results of nanosecond transient absorption measurements on SnO2/TiO2 electrodes provide direct evidence for excited-state electron injection into the conduction band of TiO2 following 590 nm excitation. A longer lifetime for 8(+) compared to 7(+) is consistent with extensive intramolecular charge separation between the CBZ and BODIPY units on the surface. Photoelectrochemical studies on 8 on a SnO2/TiO2 photoanode resulted in sustained photocurrents with current maxima of similar to 200 mu A/cm(2) with hydroquinone added as a reductant under 1 sun (AM1.5 100 mWcm(-2)) illumination at pH 4.5 in 0.1 M acetate buffer and 0.4 M LiClO4. On mixed SnO2/TiO2 electrode surfaces, with the added catalyst [Ru(Mebimpy)((4,4′-(OH)(2)PO-CH2)(2)bpy)(OH2)](2+) and chromophores 7 and 8, addition of 0.1 M benzyl alcohol resulted in sustained photocurrents of 12 and 35 mu A/cm(2), consistent with oxidation to benzaldehyde.

Herein we report the development of a photocatalytic strategy for the divergent preparation of functionalized bicyclo[1.1.1]pentylamines. This approach exploits, for the first time, the ability of nitrogen-radicals to undergo strain-release reaction with [1.1.1]propellane. This reactivity is facilitated by the electrophilic nature of these open-shell intermediates and the presence of strong polar effects in the transition-state for C-N bond formation/ring-opening. With the aid of a simple reductive quenching photoredox cycle, we have successfully harnessed this novel radical strain-release amination as part of a multicomponent cascade compatible with several external trapping agents. Overall, this radical strategy enables the rapid construction of novel amino-functionalized building blocks with potential application in medicinal chemistry programs as p-substituted aniline bioisosteres.

A novel technique called AOSD@Job’s, combining asynchronous orthogonal sample design scheme (AOSD) with Job’s method, is proposed to estimate the stoichiometric ratio of two substances that form a supramolecular aggregate under intermolecular interactions. First, a mathematical analysis was performed along with the procedure of the AOSD@Job’s method. Then, the validity of the AOSD@Job’s method was manifested by computer simulation on two model systems. Finally, the AOSD@Job’s method was applied on two real chemical systems. The stoichiometric ratio between the coordination complex of Ni2+ and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA) was estimated to be 1.0. Benzyl alcohol (BA) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) were determined to form a 1 : 1 host-guest complex. These values were consistent with the values reported in the literature. Compared with the traditional Job’s method, the AOSD@Job’s method has an evident advantage since it is still valid even if all the peaks of the supramolecular aggregate severely overlap with the peaks of the substances that form the aggregate.

We prepared a high-concentration suspension of boron nitride (BN) nanoplates stabilized with benzyl alcohol (BBN) in epoxy resin as a polymer composite adhesive for a highly efficient heat dissipation. At a BN concentration of 40 wt%, the polymer composite with B-BN exhibited a high thermal conductivity (kappa = 1.51 W/m center dot K at 25 degrees C) comparable to that of a composite with bulk BN and significantly higher than that of a composite with a chemically modified BN (S-BN). Furthermore, the concentration of B-BN in the epoxy resin was increased to 46 wt% without a significant increase in viscosity, leading to a further improvement in the thermal conductivity to 2.11 W/m.K. The epoxy resin with B-BN exhibited a low coefficient of thermal expansion and high effective modulus owing to the strong affinity to the epoxy. Finally, we recycled benzyl alcohol more than 10 times for the preparation of B-BN, which may reduce the manufacturing cost and environmental pollution. Therefore, B-BN could be a promising filler for heat dissipation as well as starting material for additional modification.

The aromatic C-H bond etherification with alcohols is one of the most atom-efficient ways to construct aryl ethers. However, it often requires a large excess of alcohols as etherification reagents, which limits the substrate scope (especially for the valuable alcohols). Herein, an alternative mechanochemical C-H bond etherification of oximes with diverse primary and secondary alcohols was developed for the first time. Given the solvent-less condition of ball milling technique, the amount of alcohols used in this chemistry has been significantly reduced (1.5-3.0 equiv to the substrates), thus enabling the incorporation of a wide range of alcohols in the C-H bond etherification for the first time. The present mechanochemical protocol enhances the application prospect of the cross dehydrogenative C-H etherification strategy in the late-stage synthesis of complex aromatic ethers.
