Two cocoa types are predominantly being cultivated in Ecuador, the highly appreciated fine Nacional and the high-yielding and disease-resistant CCN51, classified as bulk. With the introduction of foreign germplasm in Ecuador and the international demand for high-quality Nacional cocoa, the present study aims to characterize and compare the flavor profile of Nacional hybrids (EET103, EET559, EET576 and EET577) and CCN51, and to assess the effect of the genotype. The fermented dried beans were processed into liquor and their sensory properties, volatile composition and odor fingerprint were analyzed by trained panelists, headspace-solid phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS), and GC electronic nose (e-nose), respectively, combined with multivariate statistics. Seventy volatiles were identified and semi-quantified, among them, 16 and 14 volatiles conferring fruity and floral aroma notes, respectively. CCN51 was mainly characterized by undesirable odor-active volatiles, whereas the EET cultivars contained the highest concentration of most fruity and floral volatiles, with differences in between EET cultivars. Sensory data highlighted organoleptic differences between the fine and bulk liquors, i.e. the fruity and acid EET flavor strongly differed from the bitter, astringent and off-flavor attributes of CCN51. Principal component analysis (PCA) discriminated firstly between fine and bulk, and secondly between EET identity. Partial least squares analysis identified possible correlations between sensory attributes and volatile compounds. Besides, e-nose proved its usefulness for rapid assessment of the liquors’ sensory profile. The results provide a foundation for understanding the genotype’s contribution to and the compositional basis of Ecuadorian fine and bulk cocoa flavor.

Gold catalysts are best known for their selectivity in oxidation reactions, however, there is a promising future for gold in selective hydrogenations. Herein, the hydrogenation of several aldehydes and important bio-based chemical building blocks, namely 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), furfural and vanillin, was performed throughout the combination of Au nanoparticles with Lewis bases. The Au-amine ligand (e.g.. 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine) catalytic system could reduce the aldehyde carbonyl group selectively, without reducing alkene moieties or opening the furanic ring that occur on most traditional catalysts. Otherwise, the reduction of nitro group is preferential and the catalytic system was used for the synthesis of furfurylamines, important intermediates in the synthesis of different pharmaceuticals (e.g., furosemide), through the selective reductive amination of furfural starting from nitro-compounds. Moreover, a fully heterogeneous gold catalyst embedded in N-doped carbon (Au@N-doped carbon/TiO2) was able to perform these reactions in successive recycles without the addition of ligands, with impact in the development of a continuous flow process for biomass valorization.

A novel array double dielectric barrier discharge (ADDBD) combined with a TiO2/Al2O3-Co3O4/AC (Ti-Co) catalyst was applied to remove toluene. The effects of catalyst setting distance, catalyst combination mode, and process factors (including specific input energy, initial toluene concentration, and relative humidity) were investigated in terms of the toluene degradation efficiency (eta(t)(oluene)) and the selectivity of CO2 (S-CO2). When the specific input energy was 65 J.L-1, the initial toluene concentration was 100 mg . m(-3), and the relative humidity was 30%, the highest eta(t)(oluene) of 72% and Scot of 44% could be achieved with TiO2/Al2O3 10 cm and Co3O4/AC 20 cm downstream of the ADDBD. Based on the determination of active substances (e.g., O-3, center dot OH) and the catalyst activation mode, a synergistic effect of active substances and photon between the ADDBD and the Ti-Co catalyst was proposed for the removal of toluene. Finally, the biodegradability and toxicity of the outlet gas were evaluated, and the results showed that the outlet gas was more convenient for subsequent biopurification and less toxic to the surroundings after the treatment by the ADDBD combined with the Ti-Co catalyst. 4-Imidazol-1-yl-butane-1-sulfonic acid (ImBu-SO3H) has been successfully synthetized and fully characterized by FT-IR and high-resolution NMR spectroscopy (H-1, C-13). Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) has been extensively used as the cathode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). But the chemical dissolution of V2O5 in the electrolyte greatly restrains its electrochemical performance, especially cycling stability. In the present research, polypyrrole (PPy)-coated V2O5 yolk-shell nanospheres (V2O5@PPy) were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method in combination with the vapor deposition method. The density functional theory (DFT) analysis demonstrated that the PPy layer formed by oxidative polymerization manifested hydrophobicity and shielded the trace amount of water on electrode materials. Moreover, the polymerization process induced a gradient distribution of oxygen vacancies in the material and facilitated the rapid transfer of charges. The yolk-shell structure provided sufficient spaces to alleviate the structure change of electrode materials during lithiation/delithiation and inhibited the structural degradation. Hence, V2O5@PPy displayed an excellent cycling performance by improving the electrical conductivity and suppressing the chemical dissolution of V2O5. When the discharge current densities were 1 A g(-1) and 5 A g(-1), an ultralong cycling life of 1000 cycles (discharge specific capacity of 133.3 mAh g(-1)) and 5000 cycles (discharge specific capacity of 121 mAh g(-1)) was obtained in the voltage range of 2.5-4.0 V, respectively.

We report the synthesis of uniformly dispersed and stable palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) on N-doped graphitic carbon (N-C) derived from benign chitosan. The Pd@N-C nanocatalyst was synthesized by carbonization of Pd-chitosan complex at 800 degrees C under a nitrogen atmosphere, wherein chitosan obtained from fishery bio-waste served as carbon and nitrogen source. The as-synthesized nanocatalyst was characterized by several techniques; the elemental mapping by SEM and TEM analysis confirmed the uniform distribution of the Pd nanoparticles on the surface of N-doped carbon with an average size in the range of 2-6 nm. Temperature programmed chemisorption studies showed 32.27% Pd metal surface area available for reaction. This catalyst with low loading of active palladium metal was used for the hydrogenation of various reducible groups including > C = C < , > C C < , -NO2, -CHO and epoxides at room temperature (30 degrees C) and moderate H-2 pressure (5 bar). The catalyst offered nearly complete conversion with > 99% selectivity towards desired product. The excellent performance of the catalyst may be attributed to the dual role of N-rich carbon source which acts as a stabilization platform for palladium nanoparticles and also provides a basic environment. Furthermore, the catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled for five cycles without any significant loss in catalytic activity and selectivity.
