The synthesis and characterization of air-stable cationic mono nitrosonium Fe(I) PNP pincer complexes of the type [Fe(PNP)(NO)Cl](+) are described. These complexes are obtained via direct nitroslyation of [Fe(PNP)Cl-2] with nitric oxide at ambient pressure. On the basis of magnetic and EPR measurements as well as DFT calculations, these compounds were found to adopt a low-spin d(7) configuration and feature a nearly linear bound NO ligand suggesting (FeNO+)-N-I rather than (FeNO center dot)-N-II character. X-ray structures of all nitrosonium Fe(I) PNP complexes are presented. Preliminary investigations reveal that [Fe(PNPNH-iPr)(NO)(Cl](+) efficiently catalyzes the conversion of primary alcohols and aromatic and benzylic amines to yield mono N-alkylated amines in good isolated yields.

Various aryl nitriles were readily synthesized from aerobic oxidation of substituted benzyl alcohols in deep eutectic solvent composed of choline chloride (ChCl) andp-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO), followed by condensation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride. High yields of corresponding nitriles have been obtained under mild reactions conditions. This strategy belongs to a novel and environmentally benign transition-metal-free one-pot cascade process for the synthesis of nitriles.

This work reports an efficient method for the oxidation reaction of aliphatic, aromatic allylic, and benzylic alcohols into aldehydes catalyzed by the cyclopentadienyl ruthenium(II) complex (RuCpCl(PPh3)(2)) with bubbled O-2. Through further optimizing controlled studies, the tendency order of oxidation reactivity was determined as follows: benzylic alcohols>aromatic allylic alcohols>>aliphatic alcohols. In addition, this method has several advantages, including a small amount of catalyst (0.5mol%) and selective application of high discrimination activity of aliphatic, aromatic allylic, and benzylic alcohols.

Development of degradable polyester elastomers plays an important role in the applications of soft mateirals. Noncrystalline polymenthides (PMs) from menthol derived lactone monomers are excellent soft segments for preparing degradable polyester elastomers. By using cyclic trimeric phosphazene base (CTPB) as an organocatalyst, we successfully synthesized PMs with different molecular weights (8.2 kDa to 100.7 kDa) in high yields via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of menthide. When a CTPB/urea binary catalytic system was adopted, the polymerizations proceeded in a more controlled manner. Using glycerol as initiator, star shaped PMs with well-defined structure were synthesized and subsequently end-capped by acrylate. UV irradiation of the terminal acrylate groups in the star-shaped PMs resulted in formation of chemically cross-linked polyester elastomers without heat or other stimuli. The obtained polyester elastomers exhibit matched modulus (3.8-5.5 MPa), tensile strength (0.56-0.68 MPa), and strain at break (280%-320%) with soft body tissues, displaying great potential in biomedical applications.

The aim of this study was to develop a bioprocess for low temperature fruit wine making from ready-to-use freeze-dried raw materials: sour cherry (Prunus cerasus) juice and the psychrotolerant and alcohol resistant yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae AXAZ -1 immobilized on porous delignified cellulose. The effect of storage time of the freeze-dried raw materials at 4 degrees C (0, 30, and 60 days) on the fermentation efficiency of the yeast, as well as on the quality of the produced wines was evaluated. Sweet wines (>14% v/v alcohol) were produced without need for extra commercial alcohol addition. The sweet, sour cherry wines produced at 10 degrees C using the freeze-dried raw materials, were analyzed for their aroma profile by headspace SPME GC-MS analysis as well as for their sensory attributes. All wines had similar aroma characteristics with fresh and fruity (cherry) notes, and high esters content. The fermentation kinetics and the sensory characteristics indicate the potential of the freeze-dried raw materials as a ready-to-use mixture for good quality sour cherry sweet wine making even at low temperatures. A trade-off between enhancement of physical properties of the final part and the processability during manufacturing always exists for the application of nanocarbon materials in thermoset-based composites. For different epoxy resins, this study elaborates the impact of nanocarbon particle type, functionalization, and filler loading on the resulting properties, i.e., rheological, electrical, thermo-mechanical, as well as the fracture toughness in mode I and mode II loading. Therefore, a comprehensive set of carbon nanoparticles, consisting of carbon black (CB), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), few layer graphene (FLG), and electrochemically expanded graphite (ExG), in purified or functionalized configuration was introduced in various epoxy resins, with different molecular weight distributions. A novel technique to introduce sharp cracks into single-edge notched bending (SENB) fracture toughness specimens led to true values. SWCNT show highest potential for increasing electrical properties without an increase in viscosity. Functionalized MWCNT and planar particles significantly increase the fracture toughness in mode I by a factor of two.

Four polar stationary phases (ethylene-bridged hybrid silica, cyanopropyl, 2-ethylpyridine, and zwitterionic sulfobetaine) have been characterized in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) by linear free energy relationships (LFER) method with an extended set of Abraham’s descriptors. Temperature (25-55 degrees C) and pressure (110-180 bar) effects on analyte retention, separation selectivity and LFER-coefficients of chromatographic systems have been studied using the 89 test compounds of various chemical classes and carbon dioxide – methanol (9:1 v/v) binary solvent as a mobile phase. It was found that for the selected stationary phases temperature and pressure had only moderate effects on selectivity. The retention times of all analytes decrease, as can be expected, if the pressure rises at the isothermal conditions due to the increase of the fluid density and its eluting power. The effect of temperature on retention is complicated and depends both on the chemical class of analyzed compounds and the stationary phase type. Temperature and pressure variations lead to small changes in the LFER-coefficients, and general trends observed do not depend much on the stationary phase type. It may be difficult to interpret the LFER-analysis results because of the evident, more significant chromatographic phenomena. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Co-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective reductive coupling of alkynes and aldehydes has been developed under visible light photoredox dual catalysis. A variety of enantioenriched allylic alcohols have been obtained by using unsymmetrical internal alkynes and commercially available catalyst, chiral ligand, and reagents. It is noteworthy that this approach has considerable advantages, such as excellent regio- (>95:5 for >40 examples), stereo- (up to >95:5 E/Z), and enantioselectivity (92-99% ee, >35 examples) control, mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and good functional group compatibility, making it a great improvement to enantioselective alkyne-aldehyde reductive coupling reactions.

Volatile composition plays a fundamental role in wine aroma and quality. However, the concentrations of volatiles depend on climate conditions and agricultural practices, such as irrigation. The aim of the current study was to assess the effects of irrigation on the volatile composition and sensory characteristics of wines from Vitis vinifera (L.) cultivar ‘Albarino’ in two zones of NW Spain (Rias Baixas and Ribeiro) during three consecutive years (2012, 2013, and 2014). Irrigation was scheduled by the vine grower in Rias Baixas, whereas it was fixed at 50% of the estimated crop evapotranspiration in Ribeiro. Water was applied in August, mainly, in Rias Baixas and from mid-July to mid-August in Ribeiro. Irrigation significantly altered the concentrations of several volatiles, which differed between zones and years. For instance, wines from the irrigated treatment had lower concentrations of isoamyl acetate, 2-phenylethyl acetate, and ethyl hexanoate than those from the rain-fed treatment in Rias Baixas. In contrast, irrigation increased the concentrations of ethyl hexanoate and ethyl octanoate, while reduced those of free terpenes in wines from Ribeiro. Mainly, these differences between zones were caused by the climate conditions of each region.

Low temperature offers a promising avenue to preserve sashimi, but traditional frozen methods can hardly avoid the undesirable effects caused by fluids’ freezing. The aim of this work is to establish a superchilling storage-ice glazing (SS-IG) approach using essential oils (EOs) from Zanthoxylum acanthopodium (ZA) and Zanthoxylum simulans (ZS) to preserve sashimi. Different compound of EOs were identified using GC-MS. Twelve main active compositions accounted for 52.85% and 63.19% of the total oils. Fresh salmon sashimi fillets were coated by 0.3% of EOs and stored at (- 1 +/- 0.2) degrees C for 25 days. EOs-based ice-glazing layers were formed on the surface of sashimi, while the fluids in sashimi samples still kept at liquid state. As the results, the microstructure and sensory quality of sashimi were maximally maintained. The growth of microbial populations and production of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) in sashimi were inhibited. The degree of lipid oxidation in sashimi was limited at a low range. The results revealed this SS-IG approach can effectively retain the overall quality of sashimi during storage and will be a promising means for the development of sushi industry.
