Particles of differing sizes are notoriously prone to segregation in shear driven flows under the action of gravity. This has important implications in many industrial processes, where particle-size segregation can lead to flow problems and reduced product quality, as well as longer product development and start-up times. Particle-size segregation also readily occurs in many hazardous geophysical mass flows (such as snow avalanches, debris flows and volcanic pyroclastic flows) and can lead to the formation of destructive bouldery flow fronts and significantly longer runouts. Although general theories exist to model particle-size segregation, the detailed functional dependence of the segregation flux on the shear rate, gravity, pressure, particle concentration, grain size and grain-size ratio is still not known. This paper describes refractive-index matched oscillatory shear-cell experiments that shed light on the segregation velocity in the two extreme cases of (i) a single large intruder rising up through a matrix of smaller grains, and (ii) a single small intruder percolating down through a matrix of large particles. Despite the sometimes markedly different time scales for segregation in these two situations, a unifying scaling law has been found that is able to collapse all the experimental data over a wide range of shear rates and grain-size ratios in the range . The resulting functional form is easily generalizable to intermediate concentrations and can quantitatively capture laboratory experiments and numerical simulations with a mix of large and small grains.

Selective and efficient hydrosilylations of esters to alcohols by a well-defined manganese(I) complex with a commercially available bisphosphine ligand are described. These reactions are easy alternatives for stoichiometric hydride reduction or hydrogenation, and employing cheap, abundant, and nonprecious metal is attractive. Thus, there is a broad understanding of the neurobiological effects that menthol plus nicotine has on the brain including enhancing nicotine reward, altering nicotinic acetylcholine receptor number and function, and altering midbrain neuron excitability. This review seeks to summarize the current knowledge on nicotine addiction and the various brain regions and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes involved, as well as describe the most recent findings regarding menthol and green apple flavorants, and their roles in nicotine addiction and vaping-related behaviors.

Reduced graphene oxide-nanocrystals has attracted considerable attention since it has great potential due to its great chemical activity, high mechanical stability and excellent electrical properties. But the synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-nanocrystals still faces challenges, for example introduce of RGO would contribute to change the morphology of nanocrystals. To address the challenge, we designed a simple method to prepare the common composite material and it was successfully adopted to fabricate glucose sensor with higher catalytic activity. Under the optimal conditions, the experimental results indicated that RGO-Pd NCs@CuO/GC electrode showed excellent electrocatalysis for glucose oxidation with a lower detection limit of 10 nM. This sensor was of excellent stability and sensitivity. This study not only provides a new sensor for selective and reliable detection of glucose but also offers a common and facile strategy for syntheses of nanocrystals supported on reduced graphene oxide. We report a pyridyl-phosphine ruthenium(II) catalyzed tandem alcohol amination/Pictet-Spengler reaction sequence to synthesize tetrahydro-beta-carbolines from an alcohol and tryptamine. Our conditions use a Lewis acid cocatalyst, In(OTf)(3), that is compatible with typically base catalyzed amination and an acid catalyzed Pictet-Spengler cyclization. This method proceeds well with benzylic alcohols, heterocyclic carbinols, and aliphatic alcohols. We also show how combining this reaction with a subsequent cycloamination enables a direct synthesis of tetracyclic alkaloids like harmicine.

The enantioselective assembly of quaternary stereocenters through sequential functionalization of versatile carbon-atom precursors has the potential to systematize the synthesis of these ubiquitous stereogenic elements. Herein, we report two catalytic processes that allow the realization of this concept in the enantioselective synthesis of cyclopropanes. We demonstrate that C-H functionalization, carbene-transfer, and decarboxylative cross-coupling can sequentially take place in the same carbon atom to obtain highly enantioenriched cyclopropane products. The reactions reported herein give access to redox-active analogues of privileged aryldiazoacetates and demonstrate their enantioselective carbene transfer with a simple and practical rhodium catalyst.

The floral fragrance of plants is an important indicator in their evaluation. The aroma of sweet cherry flowers is mainly derived from their essential oil. In this study, based on the results of a single-factor experiment, a Box-Behnken design was adopted for ultrasound- and microwave-assisted extraction of essential oil from sweet cherry flowers of the Brooks cultivar. With the objective of extracting the maximum essential oil yield (w/w), the optimal extraction process conditions were a liquid-solid ratio of 52 mL g(-1), an extraction time of 27 min, and a microwave power of 435 W. The essential oil yield was 1.23%, which was close to the theoretical prediction. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the sweet cherry flowers of four cultivars (Brooks, Black Pearl, Tieton and Summit) were identified via headspace solid phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that a total of 155 VOCs were identified and classified in the essential oil from sweet cherry flowers of four cultivars, 65 of which were shared among the cultivars. The highest contents of VOCs were aldehydes, alcohols, ketones and esters. Ethanol, linalool, lilac alcohol, acetaldehyde, (E)-2-hexenal, benzaldehyde and dimethyl sulfide were the major volatiles, which were mainly responsible for the characteristic aroma of sweet cherry flowers. It was concluded that the VOCs of sweet cherry flowers were qualitatively similar; however, relative content differences were observed in the four cultivars. This study provides a theoretical basis for the metabolism and regulation of the VOCs of sweet cherry flowers.

Acid catalyzed carboxymethylation of alcohols is an emerging organic transformation that has grabbed the attention of scientific community in recent years. In the present study, sulfonated mesoporous polymer (MP-SO3H) is presented as a highly active solid acid catalyst to convert a wide range of alcohols into alkyl methyl carbonates. The remarkable catalytic activity of MP-SO3H is comparable to that of reported homogeneous acid catalysts. A good correlation was established between the catalytic activity and textural properties of the material. An exceptional catalytic activity of MP-SO3H was observed for DMC mediated carboxymethylation of bio-derived alcohols which is unmatchable to conventional resins and zeolites. This superior activity of MP-SO3H is ascribed to its intrinsic mesoporosity, high acid strength and uniform coverage of surface area by active sites. The catalyst is recyclable, resistant towards leaching and can be used in successive runs without losing the original activity. To the best of our knowledge, MP-SO3H is the first solid acid catalyst to exemplify highest activity for the synthesis of different alkyl methyl carbonates using DMC. The protocol developed herein opens up new avenues to transform wide range of bio-alcohols into useful organic carbonates in the future.

A Ru-II-NH3 complex, 2, was oxidized through a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism with a Ce-IV complex in water at pH 2.5 to generate a Ru-v=NH complex, 5. Complex 5 was characterized with various spectroscopies, and the spin state was determined by the Evans method to be S = 1/2. The reactivity of 5 in substrate C-H oxidation was scrutinized in acidic water, using water-soluble organic substrates such as sodium ethylbenzene-sulfonate (EBS), which gave the corresponding 1-phenylethanol derivative as the product. In the substrate oxidation, complex 5 was converted to the corresponding Ru-III-NH3 complex, 3. The formation of 1-phenylethanol derivative from EBS and that of 3 indicate that complex 5 as the oxidant does not perform nitrogen-atom transfer, in sharp contrast to other high-valent metal-imido complexes reported so far. Oxidation of cyclobutanol by 5 afforded only cyclobutanone as the product, indicating that the substrate oxidation by 5 proceeds through a hydride-transfer mechanism. In the kinetic analysis on the C-H oxidation, we observed kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) on the C-H oxidation with use of deuterated substrates and remarkably large solvent KIE (sKIE) in D2O. These positive KIEs indicate that the rate-determining step involves not only cleavage of the C-H bond of the substrate but also proton transfer from water molecules to 5. The unique hydride-transfer mechanism in the substrate oxidation by 5 is probably derived from the fact that the Ru-IV-NH2 complex (4) formed from 5 by 1e(-)/1H(+) reduction is unstable and quickly disproportionates into 3 and 5.

Cyanobacteria is blue-green microalgae that produces a variety of secondary metabolites such as antibiotic, cytotoxic and antimicrobial agents. Present investigation proposed to study an extraction of active agents from Cyanobacteria and its antibacterial activity. The Cyanobacteria were collected, and isolated colony was found to be Oscillatoria sp. and it was grown in BG 11 medium for mass cultivation. Then the centrifuged biomass was weighed and used for extraction of bioactive compounds. GCMS analysis from Oscillatoria sp. determines fatty acid, triazine derivatives, pyridine derivatives, acridine derivatives. The result revealed that Oscillatoria sp. can play crucial roles as antibacterial agents because the methanolic extract are inhibiting the growth of S. aureus for gram-positive whereas P. aeruginosa for gram-negative bacteria. The crude extract was effective against S. aureus with the highest concentration, 100 mg/ml where area of the zone was 14.10 +/- 0.8 mm. The crude extract actively inhibited P. aeruginosa at 75 and 100 mg/ml with highest area of inhibition were in the average of 13.23 +/- 0.1 and 15.43 +/- 0.2 mm.
