To determine the key aroma compounds in Chinese rice wine (CRW), four types of CRW (YH, JF, SN, and XX) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), and sensory evaluation. The contributions of the key aroma compounds to the flavor characteristics were determined by partial least squares regression. Sixty-one aroma compounds were detected. Twenty-five components were identified as odor-active compounds. On the basis of their odor active values, 18 odor-active compounds were determined as key aroma compounds. Ethyl isovalerate, ethyl butyrate, ethyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, and phenylethyl alcohol were key aroma compounds in all four types of wine. The unique key aroma compounds of JF wine were isovaleraldehyde and isoamyl acetate; those of XX wine were 1-butanol, benzaldehyde, ethyl benzoate, ethyl phenylacetate, 2-octanone, and furfural; that of YH wine was ethyl 2-methylbutyrate; and those of SN wine were 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, 2-butenoic acid ethyl ester, and 3-methyl-1-butanol.

A 3D nano-/micrometer-scaled NiO material with urchin-like structure was prepared via a facile, green synthesis route, and served as a highly efficient and durable catalyst for catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of bio-based furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FAOL) using 2-propanol as H-donor and solvent. The as-prepared NiO possessed a good active-site accessibility owing to a high surface area and large amount of acid-base sites, resulting in high FF conversion of 97.3% with 94.2% FAOL yield at 120 degrees C and 3 h of reaction, which was a superior catalytic performance compared to commercial NiO nanoparticles. Besides, the excellent catalytic performance of the sea urchin-like NiO was validated for gram-scale FAOL synthesis, and recyclability test confirmed the catalyst to be reusable for multiple reaction runs without significant activity loss after intermediary calcination in air. Notably, the introduced catalytic system was also applicable to CTH of alternative bio-derived aldehydes.

Xinjiang is a multiethnic region of China. Traditionally, most ethnic minorities are known to produce and consume cheese. Nomadic people have been reported to use lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for decades to produce fermented dairy products as part of a balanced diet. Non-starter LAB (NSLAB) contribute to different degrees of ripening, depending on the cheese variety. In the present study, we screened three types of NSLAB with good proteolysis and autolytic abilities from traditional Kazakh cheese: Pediococcus acidilactici R3-5, Staphylococcus epidermidis R4-2, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus R9-6. A control (no NSLAB) was also included, resulting in four distinct types of cheese samples. We used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the electronic nose system to identify volatile compounds and analyze the effect of NSLAB on cheese flavor at the ripening stage. The physicochemical indicators changed significantly during the ripening of Kazakh cheese. Compared with the control, the protein content, free fatty acid content, pH, flavor compounds, and odor profiles of the test cheeses were significantly different. The major chemical differences among cheeses were the synthesis of some key volatile components (ethyl caprylate, ethyl caprate, myristyl carbonate, capric acid, caprylic acid, nonanal, and benzyl alcohol). NSLAB can be used as an adjunct starter to make Kazakh cheese and the use of NSLAB affected the cheese flavor quality positively.

5-Substituted benzylidene 3-acylthiotetronic acids are antifungal. A series of 3-acylthiotetronic acid derivatives with varying substitutions at the 5-position were designed, synthesized, and characterized, based on the binding pose of 3-acyl thiolactone with the protein C171Q KasA. Fungicidal activities of these compounds were screened against Valsa Mali, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium graminearum, and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. Most target compounds exhibited excellent fungicidal activities against target fungi at the concentration of 50 mu g.mL(-1). Compounds 11c and 11i displayed the highest activity with a broad spectrum. The median effective concentration (EC50) values of 11c and 11i were 1.9-10.7 and 3.1-7.8 mu g.mL(-1), respectively, against the tested fungi, while the EC50 values of the fungicides azoxystrobin, carbendazim, and fluopyram were respectively 0.30, 4.22, and > 50 mu g.mL(-1) against V. Mali; 6.7, 41.7, and 0.18 mu g.mL(-1) against C. lunata; 22.4, 0.42, and 0.43 mu g.mL(-1) against F. graminearum; and 4.3, 0.12, and > 50 mu g.mL(-1) against F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. The structures and activities of the target compounds against C. lunata were analyzed to obtain a statistically significant comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) model with high prediction abilities (q(2) = 0.9816, r(2) = 0.8060), and its reliability was verified. The different substituents on the benzylidene at the 5-position had significant effects on the activity, while the introduction of a halogen atom at the benzene ring of benzylidene was able to improve the activity against the tested fungi. A novel nanocomposite-based non-volatile resistance switching random access memory device introducing single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)@TiO2 core-shell wires was proposed for flexible electronics. The SWCNT was de-bundled by ultrasonication with sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), and then the TiO2 skin layer on the SWCNT surface was successfully introduced by adding benzyl alcohol as a weak surfactant. The nanocomposite resistance switching layer was composed of the SWCNT@TiO2 core-shell wires and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix by a simple spin-coating method. The device exhibited reproducible resistance switching performance with a remarkably narrow distribution of operating parameters (V-SET and V-RESET were 2.63 +/- 0.16 and 0.95 +/- 0.11 V, respectively) with a large R-ON/R-OFF ratio of 10(5) for 200 consecutive switching cycles. Furthermore, the excellent resistance switching behavior in our device was maintained against mechanical stress up to 10(5) bending test. We believe that the nanocomposite memory device with SWCNT@TiO2 core-shell wires would be a critical asset to realize practical application for a flexible non-volatile memory field.

A simple hydrothermal reaction is used to synthesize a truncated tetragonal bipyramid BiVO4 with exposing {010} and {110} facets. Pt is deposited on BiVO4 surface respectively under visible light or ultraviolet light irradiation. Pt deposition is quite different in particle size, uniformity, and tightness of contact with catalyst, because of the different growth rate of Pt with different light sources. This study aimed at producing the biodegradable composite from lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) and Pebax (R) thermoplastic elastomer. For this purpose, LCNFs at different levels of 0, 1, 3, and 5% were considered. The LCNFs were prepared by benzyl alcohol and then mixed with Pebax (R). The liquid phase of the LCNFs and soluble polymer was prepared and then the masterbatches were mixed in an internal mixer (Model 815802, Brabender, Germany). The mixtures from the internal mixer were put into a hot press and test samples were compress-molded. The physical properties results indicated that water absorption and thickness swelling decreased by the addition of more amount of LCNF. By the addition of LCNFs to polymer, the tensile strength and modulus and impact strength were increased compared to samples without LCNF. No regular trend of enthalpy changes was observed as the content of LCNF changed. When the LCNF concentration was increased to 5%, the crystallization temperature was increased. As the LCNF concentration increased to 3%, the glass transition temperature (T-g) was decreased, whereas by incorporating more LCNFs, the T-g was increased. The result of the Fourier transform infrared spectra showed the peaks at 1740 cm(-1) which indicated the presence of polyamide bonds. Also, new peaks were observed in the range of 1400-1500 cm(-1) that was probably related to the presence of C-C bonds of glucose at LCNFs chains.

The tea geometrid Ectropis grisescens is an important pest of tea plant (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze). It feeds on the new leaves and tender stems of tea plants, causing serious damage. The green leaf volatile (Z)-3-hexenol (z3HOL) can effectively activate the defense of tea against E. grisescens in the laboratory. In this study, z3HOL was confirmed to activate the tea mitogen-activated protein kinase and jasmonic acid (JA) burst in the laboratory. We investigated effects of z3HOL on the defense responses of tea plants under field conditions. Our results showed that tea plants exposed to z3HOL showed higher levels of JA and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and emitted increased quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to non-exposed plants. Less E. grisescens larvae were observed in z3HOL-treated plots and less damage was found in z3HOL-treated plants than control. The number of Apanteles sp. and the parasitism of E. grisescens were also enhanced by z3HOL. These findings indicate that synthetic z3HOL can triggers tea defense responses against E. grisescens in the field, and that it could be used as a chemical elicitor to enhance biological control of tea geometrid in the future.

In the present research, beta-bismuthene nanosheet (beta-BiNS) is used as a base substrate to adsorb two volatile organic vapors evolved from sewer headspace, namely, benzyl alcohol (BA), and 2-methyldecalin (MD). Initially, the structural firmness of beta-BiNS is established using cohesive formation energy and observed to be stable. The surface adsorption of BA and MD molecules on beta-BiNS are explored with regard to the density of states, energy gap variation, adsorption energy, and charge transfer. Besides, beta-BiNS exhibits chemi-resistive behavior upon adsorption and desorption of BA and MD vapors, which indicates its use as chemosensor towards toxic vapors evolved from sewer headspace.
