In European countries, silage-free feeding is an ancient tradition and has a particularly positive reputation among consumers. In the present study, we compared grass-based forages from the same plot conserved as hay or silage or fed fresh either on pasture or indoors, and we evaluated the differences in sensory properties of milk and uncooked pressed cheese. All herbage from the first cut of a grassland dominated by perennial ryegrass was harvested on the same day and preserved either as hay or silage. The first regrowth of the same plot was used for strip grazing or green feeding indoors. Balanced by breed, 24 Montbeliarde and 24 Holstein cows were allocated to the 4 treatments. Apart from the forages, the late-lactation cows received 3 kg/d of dry matter from concentrate. After 2 wk of dietary adaptation, the bulk milk of 3 subgroups, each with 4 cows, was collected. Part of the milk was pasteurized, and part was left raw and partly transformed to small-sized Cantal-type cheese ripened for 9 wk. Milk and cheese underwent descriptive sensory analysis by a trained sensory panel, as well as analyses of physicochemical traits. Volatile organic compounds of the cheeses were also analyzed. Raw and pasteurized milk from hay-fed cows had less intense odors of cooked milk, cream, and barnyard than milk from grazing cows, whereby the effect of pasteurization did not differ between herbage utilization methods. Cheeses obtained from cows fed fresh herbage (grazing and indoors) were clearly yellower than cheeses from silage- and hay-fed cows, which coincided with the color intensity perceived by the panelists. Moreover, cheeses from cows fed fresh herbage had more intense barnyard and dry fruit flavors, were perceived as creamier and having less lactic odor, and exhibited more fat exudation than those from cows fed conserved herbage. Only a few differences were observed in milk and cheeses from hay-fed compared with silage-fed cows, and those differences were far less pronounced than those of milk and cheeses from cows fed fresh herbage. In conclusion, the present study did not substantiate assumptions of clear sensory differences of milk and uncooked pressed cheese from hay-fed compared with silage-fed cows. For the first time, this study reports that the global flavor intensity of cheeses from indoor green-fed cows is similar to that of cheeses derived from cows fed conserved forages, whereas cheeses from grazing cows have the greatest global flavor intensity.Y

A novel poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)-containing diblock copolymer was synthesized via a sequential living/controlled polymerization approach. First, the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) was carried out to obtain a monohydroxyl-terminated PCL. The terminal hydroxyl group of the PCL chain was then exploited to react with carboxyl group of 2-(dodecylthiocarbonothioylthio)-2-methylpropanoic acid to obtain a trithiocarbonate-terminated PCL. Thereafter, such trithiocarbonate-terminated PCL was used to mediate the radical polymerization of tri-n-butyl-(4-vinylbenzyl) phosphoniumbis(trifluoromethane)sulfonamide (TBP+-TFSI-) to afford PIL diblock copolymers. Notably, the PIL diblock copolymers are capable of displaying self-assembly behavior in selective solvent (e.g., ethyl acetate). In the suspensions of ethyl acetate, the self-assembly generated the spherical micelles with the aggregates of P(TBP+-TFSI-) as the cores and with PCL blocks as the coronas. Such a self-assembly behavior was further employed to obtain epoxy thermoset with nanostructures. Owing to the introduction of fluorine-containing PIL diblock copolymer, the surface dewettability of the thermosets was significantly improved owing to the enrichment of P(TBP+-TFSI-) at the surface. The introduction of PIL microdomains in epoxy resulted that the dielectric constants of the materials were significantly enhanced. More importantly, the dielectric constants were temperature-dependent and can be further enhanced while the nanostructured thermosets were heated above the glass transition temperature of PIL blocks.

A series of esters of ferulic acid and alcohols were synthesized and characterized structurally. All tested synthetic compounds were more cytotoxic against HCT116 cell line (human colon carcinoma) than ferulic acid. Benzyl and phenylethyl esters of ferulic acid were the most active compounds (IC50 = 0.0077 and 0.0065 g/L, respectively). Feruloylated wheat-bran oligosaccharides were less active than free ferulic acid against HCT116 tumor cells.

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) have great potential in plant ecophysiology, yet the role of belowground VOCs in plant stress management remains largely obscure. Analysis of biocontrol producing VOCs into the soil allow detailed insight into their interaction with soil borne pathogens for plant disease management. A root interaction trial was set up to evaluate the effects of VOCs released from Trichoderma viride BHU-V2 on soil-inhabiting fungal pathogen and okra plant growth. VOCs released into soil by T. viride BHU-V2 inhibited the growth of collar rot pathogen, Sclerotium rolfsii. Okra plants responded to VOCs by increasing the root growth (lateral roots) and total biomass content. VOCs exposure increased defense mechanism in okra plants by inducing different enzyme activities i.e. chitinase (0.89 fold), beta-1,3-glucanase (0.42 fold), peroxidase (0.29 fold), poly phenol oxidase (0.33 fold) and phenylalanine lyase (0.7 fold) when inoculated with S. rolfsii. In addition, T. viride BHU-V2 secreted VOCs reduced lipid peroxidation and cell death in okra plants under pathogen inoculated condition. GC/MS analysis of VOCs blend revealed that T. viride BHU-V2 produced more number of antifungal compounds in soil medium as compared to standard medium. Based on the above observations it is concluded that okra plant roots perceive VOCs secreted by T. viride BHU-V2 into soil that involved in induction of plant defense system against S. rolfsii. In an ecological context, the findings reveal that belowground microbial VOCs may play an important role in stress signaling mechanism to interact with plants.

A novel one-pot approach for the synthesis of trichloroacetates is described. Use of inexpensive, commercially available trichloroacetonitrile as a trichloroacyl source has made this protocol have more industrial applications. This one-pot approach is applicable to a wide range of alcohols as demonstrated by 28 examples with good to excellent yields in the order of 93%. Trichloroacetates were characterized by infrared, NMR spectra and further the structure of 2-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)ethyl-2,2,2-trichloroacetate was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Moreover, benzyl trichloroacetates synthesized were converted into corresponding benzyl iodides in good yields (51-70%). In addition, bypassing harsh reagents, use of cheaper, commercially available sodium iodide as nucleophile and mild reaction conditions are some of practical features of this methodology.

Herein, we report a multi-residue method based on dissolution-precipitation extraction combined with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) analysis for targeted screening and quantification of 216 harmful chemicals in plastic children’s toys. We established a spectrogram database containing the first-order mass spectra of all analytes and their second-order mass spectra at different collision energies. Good separation was attained in less than 60 min. As a simple and low-cost extraction method, dissolution-precipitation exhibited good recoveries for the analytes in the plastic samples. The matrix-matched standard curves were accurate for analyte quantification in specific plastics due to the solvent effects and matrix effects. The limits of quantification range were 0.1 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg. A wide linear range of 0.1-200 mg/kg was also observed, with r(2)>= 0.9924. The average recoveries ranged from 63.9% to 137.6%, and the relative standard deviation (n = 6) varied from 0.6% to 13.2%. Finally, 31 ABS actual toys and 30 PVC actual toys were detected and 20 analytes with contents ranging from 0.4 mg/kg to 172 mg/kg and 30 analytes from 0.8 mg/kg to 141,030 mg/kg were discovered respectively. Schiff base Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III) and Fe(III) complexes have been synthesized via the reaction of the 2-amino-3-hydroxy-4-bromopyridine with 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzaldehyde and different transition metal salts. The complexes have been characterized by several methods. In addition, the prepared complexes were tested as precursors for the synthesis of their corresponding metal oxides nanoparticles by controlled aerobic thermal decomposition at 500 degrees C. The structure, composition, morphology and particle size of the prepared nanostructured metal oxides were characterized by FTIR, X-ray powder diffraction and by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the corresponding materials have been tested as catalysts in the heterogeneous selective solvent free oxidation of benzyl alcohol giving high selectivities to benzaldehyde. In addition, the nanostructured metal oxides gave, in general, higher conversions than those of the starting Schiff base metal complexes. Finally, the nanostructured metal oxides have been treated with an organometallic Pd(II) precursor to prepare Pd-doped metal oxides, which have been tested as catalysts in two different C-C coupling reactions, namely, the coupling reaction between iodobenzene and phenylboronic acid and the double coupling of iodobenzene with 2,6-dibromopyridin. In all cases interesting conversions and yields were observed for the nanostructured metal oxides. Graphic

Two novel dinuclear Zn(II) and tetranuclear Co(II) complexes of a tetradentate N2O2 Schiff base ligand (H2L = N,N ‘-bis-(4-hydroxysalicylidene)-1,3-diaminopropane) were prepared. The structures of the H2L ligand, [4(Zn2L(mu-O2CCH3)(O2CCH3)(H2O))] . 4CH(3)OH . 3H(2)O (complex 1) and [Co4L2(mu-O2CCH3)(2)(O2CCH3)(2)].2H(2)O (complex 2) were unambiguously characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that two Zn(II) nuclei of 1 were connected through mu-phenolato and mu-acetato bridges and had distorted square pyramidal and distorted octahedral coordination geometries. Four Co(II) nuclei of 2, on the contrary, showed a Co4O4 cubane-like configuration in which Co(II) cations and O atoms were located at alternating corners of a distorted cube. Density functional theory studies at the B3LYP/6-31 G(d) level were carried out to gain an insight into the thermodynamic stability of the complexes. in vitro cytotoxicity of the ligand and the complexes were evaluated using the MTT assay against breast cancer MCF7 cells, melanoma cancer A375 cells, and prostate cancer PC3 cells as representative human cancer cell lines. Complex 1 showed a remarkable activity against A375 and PC3 cancer cell lines. In addition, 1 and 2 were used as precursors to produce zinc and cobalt oxide nanoparticles via pyrolysis technique. The resulting ZnO and Co3O4 nanoparticles were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Then, these nanoparticles were used as heterogeneous catalysts in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol with hydrogen peroxide at room temperature. Both catalysts showed good recyclability with a negligible decrease in their efficiency during four catalytic cycles. The results of theoretical calculations showed that the most stable product was benzaldehyde, which is in good agreement with the obtained experimental results.

A novel approach was achieved for growing citric acid towards polymer-like graphene quantum dots (PGQD) with high efficiency in the presence of sodium hydroxide as a base catalyst. This protocol is completely safe, simple, fast, and efficient by a bottom up strategy. Thermal treatment of a mixture containing citric acid with NaOH at 300 degrees C gave PGQD during 5 min. The reaction afforded a new heterogeneous catalyst, Pd/PdO/Fe3O4@PGQD, in the presence of Pd and Fe3O4. The magnetically recoverable catalyst showed high activity in the oxidation of alkylarenes and alcohols using H2O2 as a green oxidant at room temperature. Comparison of the results with previous reports showed the efficiency of the catalyst to have high turnover numbers in mild reaction conditions.

The present work deals with the characterization of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in wines from the Slovak Tokaj wine region. Studied wine samples were divided into three groups-varietal wines from registered Tokaj vine varieties, film wines Tokajske samorodne dry, and naturally sweet botrytized wines Tokaj selections. The VOCs from wines were extracted using optimized solid phase microextraction (SPME) and analyzed by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) coupled to high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HRTOF-MS). In total, 176 VOCs were identified in all 46 studied samples. It was found that the total number of VOCs in varietal wines was generally higher than in botrytized wines. All three studied categories showed characteristic VOC profiles with significant differences. Varietal wines were characterized by higher concentrations of esters and terpenoids originating from grapes. The presence of gamma-octalactone, (E)-6-methylhept-2-en-4-one, and lack of benzaldehyde were typical for Tokajske samorodne dry. Tokaj selections expressed the highest concentration of diethyl malate, benzaldehyde, and furfurals. Several interesting trends were also observed. The concentration of fermentation products was highest in varietal wines, while long-term matured Tokaj special wines were typified by the presence of compounds related to noble-rotten raisins (2-phenylacetaldehyde, ethyl 2-phenylacetate, and 2-phenylethanol), wood (cis-whisky lactone), and aging (1,1,6-trimethyl-2H-naphthalene, furfural, and 5-methylfurfural).
