Several families of polymers possessing various end-groups are characterized by ion mobility mass spectrometry (IMMS). A significant contribution of the end-groups to the ion collision cross section (CCS) is observed, although their role is neglected in current fitting models described in literature. Comparing polymers prepared from different synthetic procedures might thus, be misleading with the current theoretical treatments. We show that this issue is alleviated by comparing the CCS of various polymer ions (polyesters and polyethers) as a function of the number of atoms in the macroion instead of the usual representation involving the degree of polymerization. Finally, we extract the atom number density from the spectra which gives us the possibility to evaluate the compaction of polymer ions, and by extension to discern isomeric polymers.

A series of 3,3′-disubstituted 5,5′-bi(1,2,4-triazine) derivatives was synthesized and screened against the erythrocytic stage of Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 line. The most potent dimer, 6k, with an IC50 (50% inhibitory concentration) of 0.008 mu M, had high in vitro potency against P. falciparum lines resistant to chloroquine (W2, IC50 = 0.0047 +/- 0.0011 mu M) and artemisinin (MRA1240, IC50 = 0.0086 +/- 0.0010 mu M). Excellent ex vivo potency of 6k was shown against clinical field isolates of both P. falciparum (IC50 = 0.022-0.034 mu M) and Plasmodium vivax (IC50 = 0.0093-0.031 mu M) from the blood of outpatients with uncomplicated malaria. Despite 6k being cleared relatively rapidly in mice, it suppressed parasitemia in the Peters 4-day test, with a mean ED50 value (50% effective dose) of 1.47 mg kg(-1) day(-1) following oral administration. The disubstituted triazine dimer 6k represents a new class of orally available antimalarial compounds of considerable interest for further development.

The one-pot synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical ethers from aldehydes and ketones can be conveniently performed using Yb(OTf)(3) as catalyst and triethylsilane as reducing agent in presence of alcohols. This methodology leads to the synthesis of ether derivatives with good yields. Notably, this process resulted a useful tool to protect alcohols as benzyl ether derivatives using differently substituted benzaldehydes as protecting agents under mild conditions. A plausible mechanism was also proposed.

A series of highly CO2-soluble open-chain crown ether bridged diphosphates were designed and prepared as chelating ligands which were used to extract lanthanide ions from cellulose paper into supercritical CO2 (ScCO2). These ligands were designed by introducing different ester side chains and joining the two phosphorus groups with different length of ethylene oxide group which could provide enhanced solubility and complexation ability. The solubility data of these synthesized diphosophates in ScCO2 were measured at 313.15 K and 10.65 MPa-13.69 MPa. Lanthanides metal ions including La3+, Ce3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, Gd3+, Er3+, and Yb3+ were successfully removed from the solid matrix by supercritical fluid extractions using these chelating ligands at 313.15 K and 20 MPa. The extraction efficiency of metal ion was affected by chelating ligands’ side chain, which increased from 68% to 94% mainly driven by the increased solubility capability.

Alkaline lignin obtained from paper manufacturing is a potential feedstock for upgrading to produce value-added chemicals. This study demonstrates the efficiencies of synthesized Ni supported CeO2-ZrO2 catalysts to convert this low-cost alkaline lignin into value-added phenolic-based chemicals for further commercial applications. Lignin depolymerization was performed under mild reaction conditions, namely, reaction temperature of 200-300 degrees C, and reaction time of 1-5 h. Three different catalyst preparation methods (simple wet-impregnation, wet-impregnation assisted reduction in H-2 atmosphere and one-step chemical reduction) were investigated and used to evaluate possible correlations between the active Ni phase and catalytic performance in lignin depolymerization. The active Ni phase was successfully formed by one-step chemical reduction method which showed a significant improvement on product yield, especially lignin oil. The best result obtained in lignin depolymerization was by using 10%Ni/CeO2-ZrO2-red catalyst which resulted in producing a high yield of lignin oil (46.8%) from lignin feedstock under mild condition of 250 degrees C. The major phenolic compounds in lignin oil were: guaiacol, methyl-guaiacol, ethyl-guaiacol, vanillin, acetovanillone, and homovanillic acid. Furthermore, the reaction temperature affected the product yield and product distribution resulting in higher diversity of phenolic compounds in lignin oil.

Heteroatom-doped carbon materials (HDCMs) with abundant active functional groups and stable structural characteristics are promising catalysts for eco-friendly metal-free catalysis. In this work, phosphorus-doped carbon materials with a highly porous structure and extremely high surface area (>1600 m(2) g(-1)) were successfully prepared via a convenient and scalable strategy using easily available soluble starch and phosphoric acid, which are expected to show good performance in mass-transfer and thus promote the catalytic process. As expected, the as-prepared PC-700 catalyst showed remarkable catalytic performance in aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol with a higher TOF value than other previously reported heteroatom-doped carbon catalysts. It also exhibited great tolerance for various substrates, including aromatic, alicyclic, heterocyclic, and aliphatic alcohols. On the basis of the related characterization studies and experimental results, it was proved that the P-O-C species and the defects caused by P-O species doping in the PC-700 catalyst are the active sites for aerobic oxidation. A unique mechanism was proposed for the catalytic process, which is different from that of N-doped graphene and graphene oxide catalyzed reactions that follow a free radical mechanism. In addition, the recycling test and characterization of the reused catalyst indicate that the PC-700 shows extraordinary performance in terms of both recyclability and stability and retains high reactivity even after eight cycles.

Phthalocyanines of Fe(II) and Ni(II) were immobilized on microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) via chemical binding. MCC was obtained from cotton as a cheap and abundant source of cellulose. The new composites were characterized by FT-IR, Flame Absorption Atomic Spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope, and Transmission Electron Microscope. The nanocomposites showed high surface areas due to use of MCC as the support in the syntheses procedures. The catalytic activities of composites were examined in the oxidations of alcohols, and ethylbenzene. The oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones and ethylbenzene to acetophenone were carried out with high yields and excellent selectivities. The catalysts are recyclable for 6 times without any decrease in the oxidation reaction yield. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Ligand-modified liposomes are used for breast tumor-specific drug delivery to improve the efficacy and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy; however, only a few liposomes with high targeting efficiency have been developed because the mono-targeting, ligand-modified liposomes are generally unable to deliver an adequate therapeutic dose. In this study, we designed biotin-glucose branched ligand-modified, dual-targeting liposomes (Bio-Glu-Lip) and evaluated their potential as a targeted chemotherapy delivery system in vitro and in vivo. When compared with the non-targeting liposome (Lip), Bio-Lip, and Glu-Lip, Bio-Glu-Lip had the highest cell uptake in 4T1 cells (3.00-fold, 1.60-fold, and 1.95-fold higher, respectively) and in MCF-7 cells (2.63-fold, 1.63-fold, and 1.85-fold higher, respectively). The subsequent cytotoxicity and in vivo assays further supported the dual-targeting liposome is a promising drug delivery carrier for the treatment of breast cancer.

Background: One of the future applications of magnetic nanoparticles is the development of new iron-oxide-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) negative contrast agents, which are intended to improve the results of diagnostics and complement existing Gd-based contrast media. Results: Iron oxide nanoparticles designed for use as MRI contrast media are precisely examined by a variety of methods: powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy and zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance (ZF-NMR) spectroscopy. TEM and XRD measurements reveal a spherical shape of the nanoparticles with an average diameter of 5-8 nm and a cubic spinel-type crystal structure of space group Fd-3m. Raman, Mossbauer and NMR spectroscopy clearly indicate the presence of the maghemite gamma-Fe2O3 phase. Moreover, a difference in the magnetic behavior of uncoated and human serum albumin coated iron oxide nanoparticles was observed by Mossbauer spectroscopy. Conclusion: This difference in magnetic behavior is explained by the influence of biofunctionalization on the magnetic and electronic properties of the iron oxide nanoparticles. The ZF-NMR spectra analysis allowed us to determine the relative amount of iron located in the core and the surface layer of the nanoparticles. The obtained results are important for understanding the structural and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles used as T-2 contrast agents for MRI.
