Novel single-group bifunctional hydrogen-bonding catalysts based on thiazolium were developed. The integration of hydrogen-bonding donor and acceptor in a single thiazolium ring not only amplified synergetic effect, but also enhanced the stability and the controllability for catalysis, and hence prompt thiazolium an efficient metal-free catalyst for melt ROP of cyclic esters. More interestingly, thiazolium may form a compacted active center with monomer and initiator (or propagating chain end), thus enabling it to selectively activate lower sterically encumbered substrates in ROP.

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) have great potential in plant ecophysiology, yet the role of belowground VOCs in plant stress management remains largely obscure. Analysis of biocontrol producing VOCs into the soil allow detailed insight into their interaction with soil borne pathogens for plant disease management. A root interaction trial was set up to evaluate the effects of VOCs released from Trichoderma viride BHU-V2 on soil-inhabiting fungal pathogen and okra plant growth. VOCs released into soil by T. viride BHU-V2 inhibited the growth of collar rot pathogen, Sclerotium rolfsii. Okra plants responded to VOCs by increasing the root growth (lateral roots) and total biomass content. VOCs exposure increased defense mechanism in okra plants by inducing different enzyme activities i.e. chitinase (0.89 fold), beta-1,3-glucanase (0.42 fold), peroxidase (0.29 fold), poly phenol oxidase (0.33 fold) and phenylalanine lyase (0.7 fold) when inoculated with S. rolfsii. In addition, T. viride BHU-V2 secreted VOCs reduced lipid peroxidation and cell death in okra plants under pathogen inoculated condition. GC/MS analysis of VOCs blend revealed that T. viride BHU-V2 produced more number of antifungal compounds in soil medium as compared to standard medium. Based on the above observations it is concluded that okra plant roots perceive VOCs secreted by T. viride BHU-V2 into soil that involved in induction of plant defense system against S. rolfsii. In an ecological context, the findings reveal that belowground microbial VOCs may play an important role in stress signaling mechanism to interact with plants.

The catalytic properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing triangular Fe(iii) clusters in the promotion of organic syntheses and photocatalysis applications have been receiving substantial attention for decades. These clusters are appealing due to the strong Lewis acidity afforded by coordinatively unsaturated sites upon the removal of solvent from the framework. In this paper, triangular Fe(iii) cluster-based MOFs were shown to be highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the solvent-free one-pot condensation of 2-aminobenzamide and alcohols to form quinazolin-4-ones under microwave irradiation. The Fe-MOF catalysts ranging from microporous to mesoporous structures with a variety of geometrical pore structures were investigated. Because of the open accessible spaces for reactants and high density of active sites, MOF-907, built from trimer Fe clusters and a mixture of two linkers, was more effective than other Fe(iii)-MOFs. The catalyst can be used for a broad substrate scope and recycled several times without a significant drop-off in its activity.

One-pot conversion of furfural to the target product gamma-valerolactone (GVL) is a challenging and meaningful part of biomass exploitation. Development of heterogeneous catalysts with both Bronsted and Lewis acid properties has proved to be promising and useful because they offer an efficient way to tandem cascade reactions from furfural to GVL. Herein, we successfully synthesized sulfated DUT-67(Hf), a novel bifunctional catalyst, via a post-synthetic modification method. The prepared sulfated DUT-67(Hf) was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, N-2 adsorption-desorption, Elemental (N, C, H, S) analyses, situ infrared spectra of pyridine adsorptions, XPS, FTIR, TG, and NH3-TPD. The acidity of the catalysts could be adjusted by submersion in different concentrations of aqueous sulfuric acid, giving 0.01 mol/L sulfuric acid for 0.42 mmol/g acidity to 0.1 mol/L sulfuric acid for 2.16 mmol/g acidity. Sulfated DUT-67(Hf) possessed by 0.06 mol/L aqueous sulfuric acid exhibited optimal catalytic activity and showed an 87.1% yield of GVL under the conditions of 180 degrees C after 24 h of reaction. Moreover, the mechanism of introducing Bronsted acid sites into DUT-67(Hf) and the better hydrogen donors was also investigated through contrasting experiments.

Encapsulation of flavin mononucleotide (FMN) in a porphyrinatomanganese(III)-based cubic cage allowed the fast reduction of manganese(III) porphyrin in the presence of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). This supramolecular system was capable of efficiently activating dioxygen and catalyzing the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Control experiments suggested that the close proximity between FMN and manganese(III) porphyrins forced by the host-guest interaction might benefit the electron-transfer process from the FMN cofactor to the metal centers.

A Diaminocyclopentadienone iron tricarbonyl complex has been applied in chemoselective hydrogen transfer reductions. The ring-opening polymerizations of e-caprolactone (CL) using 5- and 6-membered ring Zn complexes bearing Schiff base as catalysts were comparatively studied. The 5-membered ring Zn complexes exhibited a considerably higher polymerization rate than the 6-membered ring Zn complexes (2-12 fold for CL polymerization) did. X-ray data revealed that 5-membered ring L-2(5-Ph) Zn creates larger empty space around the Zn center than 6-membered ring L-2(6-Bn) Zn. This allows higher interaction between the initiator and Zn complex and easy CL coordination.

Homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalyzed aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol in acetic acid to benzaldehyde was performed in polytetrafluoroethylene microreactors operated under slug flow at temperatures up to 150 degrees C and pressures up to 5 bar. Depending on the bubble velocity and length, a wetted or dewetted slug flow was observed, characterized typically by a complete or partially wetting liquid film around the bubble body. The latter flow suffered from a limited interfacial area for mass transfer. Experiments at temperatures up to ca. 90 degrees C were under kinetic control given no product yield difference under wetted and dewetted slug flows and were used to establish a simplified kinetic expression (first order in benzyl alcohol and zero order in oxygen). This allows to develop a mass transfer model combined with an instantaneous reaction regime that well described the experimental results at higher temperatures where mass transfer was limiting in the dewetted slug flow.
