A simple and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of 3-hydroxy-2-oxoindole derivatives through a direct vinylogous aldol reaction of allylic esters with isatins, catalyzed by 1,5,7-triazabicyclodec-5-ene. This method affords a variety of 3-hydroxy-2-oxoindole derivatives in moderate to excellent yields with high regioselectivities. An asymmetric version of this reaction catalyzed by Corey’s chiral guanidine proceeded with moderate enantioselectivity. The protocol can also be used to synthesize isatin spiro ethers.

A series of highly CO2-soluble open-chain crown ether bridged diphosphates were designed and prepared as chelating ligands which were used to extract lanthanide ions from cellulose paper into supercritical CO2 (ScCO2). These ligands were designed by introducing different ester side chains and joining the two phosphorus groups with different length of ethylene oxide group which could provide enhanced solubility and complexation ability. The solubility data of these synthesized diphosophates in ScCO2 were measured at 313.15 K and 10.65 MPa-13.69 MPa. Lanthanides metal ions including La3+, Ce3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, Gd3+, Er3+, and Yb3+ were successfully removed from the solid matrix by supercritical fluid extractions using these chelating ligands at 313.15 K and 20 MPa. The extraction efficiency of metal ion was affected by chelating ligands’ side chain, which increased from 68% to 94% mainly driven by the increased solubility capability.

Chlorine is the 20th most abundant element on the earth compared to bromine, iodine, and fluorine, a sulfonimide reagent, N-chloro-N-(phenylsulfonyl)benzenesulfonamide (NCBSI) was identified as a mild and selective oxidant. Without activation, the reagent was proved to oxidize primary and secondary alcohols as well as their symmetrical and mixed ethers to corresponding aldehydes and ketones. With recoverable PS-TEMPO catalyst, selective oxidation over chlorination of primary and secondary alcohols and their ethers with electron-donating substituents was achieved. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), also known as glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII), has recently emerged as a prominent biomarker of prostate cancer (PC) and as an attractive protein trap for drug targeting. At the present time, several drugs and molecular diagnostic tools conjugated with selective PSMA ligands are actively evaluated in different preclinical and clinical trials. In the current work, we discuss design, synthesis and a preliminary biological evaluation of PSMA-specific small-molecule carrier equipped by Doxorubicin (Dox). We have introduced an unstable azo-linker between Dox and the carrier hence the designed compound does release the active substance inside cancer cells thereby providing a relatively high Dox concentration in nuclei and a relevant cytotoxic effect. In contrast, we have also synthesized a similar conjugate with a stable amide linker and it did not release the drug at all. This compound was predominantly accumulated in cytoplasm and did not cause cell death. Preliminary in vivo evaluation has showed good efficiency for the degradable conjugate against PC3-PIP(PSMA(+))-containing xenograft mine. Thus, we have demonstrated that the conjugate can be used as a template to design novel analogues with improved targeting, anticancer activity and lower rate of potential side effects. 3D molecular docking study has also been performed to elucidate the underlying mechanism of binding and to further optimization of the linker area for improving the target affinity.

Employing isotope incubation studies, the biosynthetic pathway leading to a series of benzylic derivatives was elucidated in the fermentation broth of the edible mushroom Ischnoderma resinosum (P. Karst). Twenty-six hydroxy- and methoxybenzylic derivatives were screened by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of which 13 were detected in the culture media. Results from the isotope incubation studies showed the transformation of both benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid into benzaldehyde. Benzaldehyde was then converted into 4-methoxybenzaldehyde via hydroxylation and subsequent methylation of the 4-C position. The resulting 4-methoxybenzaldehyde was then hydroxylated in the 3-C position followed by methylation into 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. Based on these findings, a novel metabolic scheme for the biosynthesis of benzylic derivatives in I. resinosum was proposed. The knowledge of the biosynthetic pathway was utilized to produce 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) from 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid (vanillic acid). This is the first report to elucidate the biosynthetic pathway of benzyl derivatives and production of vanillin from I. resinosum.

The heterogeneous metal-organic framework Bi-BTC successfully catalyzed the synthesis of para-xylene from bio-based 2,5-dimethylfuran and acrylic acid in a promising yield (92 %), under relatively mild conditions (160 degrees C, 10 bar), and with a low reaction-energy barrier (47.3 kJ mol(-1)). Benzyl alcohol and a set ofpara-substituted derivatives (-NO2, -Cl, -CH3, -OCH3 and -OH) were converted to the corresponding aldehydes in a commercial continuous-flow microfluidic reactor. Due to the dimension and the rigidity of the commercial microfluidic reactor channels, a stable suspension with few-layer graphitic carbon nitride nanoparticles (GCN-TS) was used to avoid the blockage of the photocatalyst in the channels of the reactor. Preliminary photocatalytic batch experiments revealed that different reaction yields were obtained depending on the aromatic ring activating/deactivating nature of the substituent groups. Regarding the ex-periments under continuous-flow, the highest aldehyde production was obtained for the reactions with 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol as starting molecule, corresponding to 0.19 mM at a retention time of merely 0.75 min. The results show the possibility of employing microfluidic reactors for the selective photocatalytic conversion of aromatic alcohols for both process intensification and screening applications due to the drastic decrease of reaction time.

In order to illustrate the aroma characteristics of the green tea, the volatiles of FPGT was analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O). The results showed that odor activity value (OAV) of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) was 1195.21 and the odor intensity about DMS was 6.2 in FPGT. Aroma recombination experiment also confirmed the important contribution of DMS to cooked corn-like aroma. Aroma character impact (ACI) values of DMS in tea processed by Zhonghuang 1 and Fudingdabai were 72.01% and 37.86%, respectively. This indicated that the high proportion of DMS was the dominant character of green tea with cooked corn-like aroma. In addition, the S-methylmethionine (SMM) content in fresh leaves of Zhonghuang 1 (0.21 mg/g) was significantly higher than that of Fudingdabai (0.16 mg/g), which was an important reason for high DMS content.

The hitherto known polyamidoamines (PAAs) are not suitable as structural materials because they are usually water-soluble or swellable in water. This paper deals with the synthesis and characterization of semi-crystalline hydrophobic PAAs (H-PAAs) by combining different bis-sec-amines with bis-acrylamides obtained from C6-C12 bis-prim-amines. H-PAAs were initially obtained in a solution of benzyl alcohol, a solvent suitable for both monomers and polymers. Their number average molecular weights, M over bar n, which were determined with H-1-NMR by evaluating the percentage of their terminal units, varied from 6000 to >10,000. The solubility, thermal properties, ignitability and water resistance of H-PAAs were determined. They were soluble in organic solvents, semi-crystalline and thermally stable. The most promising ones were also prepared using a bulk process, which has never been previously reported for PAA synthesis. In the form of films, these H-PAAs were apparently unaffected by water. The films underwent tensile and wettability tests. They showed similar Young moduli (260-263 MPa), whereas the maximum stress and the stress at break depended on the number of methylene groups of the starting bis-acrylamides. Their wettability was somewhat higher than that of common Nylons. Interestingly, none of the H-PAAs considered, either as films or powders, ignited after prolonged exposure to a methane flame.
