Catalytic oxidation of alcohols containing heteroatoms with molecular oxygen is usually rather challenging, as transition metal catalysts are easily deactivated by heteroatoms. In contrast to conventional results, herein facile oxidation of 2-pyridinemethanol with dioxgyen was observed over simple vanadium catalysts including VOSO4 or VO(acac)(2), which seemed much easier than that of benzyl alcohol. 2-Pyridinemethanol could coordinate with the vanadium center, which would promote oxidation of 2-pyridinemethanol itself, rather than deactivate vanadium catalysts. This study would provide a new clue to develop efficient catalysts for transformations of heterocyclic compounds.

A novel approach was achieved for growing citric acid towards polymer-like graphene quantum dots (PGQD) with high efficiency in the presence of sodium hydroxide as a base catalyst. This protocol is completely safe, simple, fast, and efficient by a bottom up strategy. Thermal treatment of a mixture containing citric acid with NaOH at 300 degrees C gave PGQD during 5 min. The reaction afforded a new heterogeneous catalyst, Pd/PdO/Fe3O4@PGQD, in the presence of Pd and Fe3O4. The magnetically recoverable catalyst showed high activity in the oxidation of alkylarenes and alcohols using H2O2 as a green oxidant at room temperature. Comparison of the results with previous reports showed the efficiency of the catalyst to have high turnover numbers in mild reaction conditions.

An Auxiliary Activity Family 5 (AA5) copper-radical alcohol oxidase (AlcOx) with promiscuous activity towards simple alkyl and aromatic alcohols was evaluated using real-time reaction progress monitoring. Reaction kinetics using variable time normalization analysis (VTNA) were determined from reaction progress curves. By this approach, a detailed view of the entire reaction time course under various conditions was obtained and used to identify parameters that will inform further process optimization development. Optimal activity was found impacted by several factors, including reaction pH, oxygen saturation, and the source of a co-oxidant, either HRP or a chemical alternative, potassium ferricyanide. Analysis of reaction progress curves demonstrated that reaction stalling occurred as a result of oxygen depletion and from a loss of enzyme activity over time. The cooperativity between AlcOx, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), and catalase that result in enhanced reactivity was explored, with reaction pH being identified as a key factor for optimal activity. The results show that a process with HRP is more robust than with potassium ferricyanide, but that both oxidants likely activate AlcOx by a similar mechanism. The phenomenon of product inhibition was investigated for representative reactants, revealing that reaction inhibition was more significant for butyraldehyde than for benzaldehyde. Our analysis suggests that this is linked to the greater proportion in which butyraldehyde exists in the hydrated form.

The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has approved only a negligible number of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA)-based microsphere formulations, indicating the difficulty in developing a PLGA microsphere. A thorough understanding of microsphere formulations is essential to meet the challenge of developing innovative or generic microspheres. In this study, the key factors, especially the key process factors of the marketed PLGA microspheres, were revealed for the first time via a reverse engineering study on Vivitrol(R) and verified by the development of a generic naltrexone-loaded microsphere (GNM). Qualitative and quantitative similarity with Vivitrol(R), in terms of inactive ingredients, was accomplished by the determination of PLGA. Physicochemical characterization of Vivitrol(R) helped to identify the critical process parameters in each manufacturing step. After being prepared according to the process parameters revealed by reverse engineering, the GNM demonstrated similarity to Vivitrol(R) in terms of quality attributes and in vitro release (f(2) = 65.3). The research on the development of bioequivalent microspheres based on the similar technology of Vivitrol(R) will benefit the development of other generic or innovative microspheres.

The preparation of a new series of dihydridoboranes supported by N,N-chelating ligands, [R(2)NCH(2)CH(2)NAe](-) (R = alkyl, Ar = aryl), is reported. These new boranes react selectively with carbonyls, imines, and a series of electron-deficient fluoroarenes. In this work we synthetized the bioinspired benzoxanthene lignans (BXLs)3,14-22, and the phenazine derivative23as potential antimycotic agents. MICs and MFCs againstCandidastrains were determined. In a preliminary screening, compounds3,15,20,21,22were substantially inactive. Compounds14and17showed antifungal activity, being able to inhibit the growth of the majority ofCandidastrains with MIC values in the range 4.6-19.2 mu M (14) and 26.0-104.3 mu M (17); for three strains, the MICs were lower than those obtained using the antimycotic drug fluconazole. The three BXLs18,19and23showed some MIC values lower than that of fluconazole;18was also active against two non-albicans Candidastrains resistant to fluconazole. Phenazine23, although active only against one strain (MIC = 1.3 mu M), was one order of magnitude more potent than fluconazole. All the BXLs were fungicidal.

In this paper we describe a straightforward supramolecular strategy to encapsulate silicon phthalocyanine (SiPc) photosensitizers (PS) in polymeric micelles made of poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-b-methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) (PCL-PEG) block copolymers. While PCL-PEG micelles are promising nanocarriers based on their biocompatibility and biodegradability, the design of our new PS favors their encapsulation. In particular, they combine two axial benzoyl substituents, each of them carrying either three hydrophilic methoxy(triethylenoxy) chains (1), three hydrophobic dodecyloxy chains (3), or both kinds of chains (2). The SiPc derivatives 1 and 2 are therefore amphiphilic, with the SiPc unit contributing to the hydrophobic core, while lipophilicity increases along the series, making it possible to correlate the loading efficacy in PCL-PEG micelles with the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance of the PS structure. This has led to a new kind of third-generation nano-PS that efficiently photogenerates O-1(2), while preliminary in vitro experiments demonstrate an excellent cellular uptake and a promising PDT activity.

Reduced graphene oxide-nanocrystals has attracted considerable attention since it has great potential due to its great chemical activity, high mechanical stability and excellent electrical properties. But the synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-nanocrystals still faces challenges, for example introduce of RGO would contribute to change the morphology of nanocrystals. To address the challenge, we designed a simple method to prepare the common composite material and it was successfully adopted to fabricate glucose sensor with higher catalytic activity. Under the optimal conditions, the experimental results indicated that RGO-Pd NCs@CuO/GC electrode showed excellent electrocatalysis for glucose oxidation with a lower detection limit of 10 nM. This sensor was of excellent stability and sensitivity. This study not only provides a new sensor for selective and reliable detection of glucose but also offers a common and facile strategy for syntheses of nanocrystals supported on reduced graphene oxide. The tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, the strongest quake ever recorded in Japan, deposited tsunami sediments along the coastline of the affected area. Because the sediments contained a wide variety of hazardous chemicals, including organic micropollutants, a method for rapidly evaluating the environmental and human health risks of such chemicals is necessary. For this purpose, we propose a novel three-step scheme designated rapid screening for environmental micropollutants in emergency situations (REPE). In the first step, samples are subjected to target screening analysis using an automated identification and quantification system (TSA-AIQS) involving gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In the second step, the chemicals detected by TSA-AIQS analysis are quantified precisely by conventional target analysis. The third step is risk assessment of the target chemicals. TSA-AIQS analysis of the tsunami sediments detected 63 substances, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (both native and alkylated PAHs) at high concentrations. These PAHs were precisely quantified by target analysis, and the concentrations were used to assess the health risks posed by oral intake, which were found to be negligible. Our results suggest that the REPE scheme will be useful for rapid, comprehensive screening and risk assessment in emergency situations. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Transition-metal-free visible-light photoredox catalyzed decarboxylative radical addition has been developed for the construction of alpha,beta-diamino esters from amino acids with glyoxylic oxime ethers under mild conditions. Cyclic and chain amino acids, dipeptides, and simple aliphatic acids are amenable to this addition as the alkyl radical source. A variety of alpha,beta-diamino esters with broad functional groups were synthesized in satisfactory yields at room temperature. The employment of acridinium as the photocatalyst and its potential scalability also demonstrate the synthetic value in practice.
