Carbon supported Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles catalyst was prepared in a flow reactor toachieve enhanced catalytic activities with low Pt loading for the acceptorless dehydrogenative synthesis of pyrimidines. Spectroscopic (XAS analysis) and microscopic (HAADF-STEM) techniques reveled that the core-shell structure was formed by the applied preparation method. The Pd@Pt/PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone)/C catalyst showed the activity for the three component one pot synthesis of pyrimidines through a series of consecutive reactions including oxidation of alcohols, C?C, and C?N coupling, followed by heterocyclization and dehydrogenation employing various primary alcohols, secondary alcohols, and amidines. The reaction mechanism on Pd@Pt/ PVP/C catalyst was explored by comparison with the control experiments.

The ring-opening polymerizations of e-caprolactone (CL) using 5- and 6-membered ring Zn complexes bearing Schiff base as catalysts were comparatively studied. The 5-membered ring Zn complexes exhibited a considerably higher polymerization rate than the 6-membered ring Zn complexes (2-12 fold for CL polymerization) did. X-ray data revealed that 5-membered ring L-2(5-Ph) Zn creates larger empty space around the Zn center than 6-membered ring L-2(6-Bn) Zn. This allows higher interaction between the initiator and Zn complex and easy CL coordination.

Effects of three carp species on texture, color, and aroma properties of Chinese traditional fermented freshwater fish (Suan yu) were investigated. Suan yu were produced from Ctenopharyngodon idella (Grass Carp, GC), Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Silver Carp, SC), and Cyprinus carpio (Common Carp, CC) as the control. GC displayed the highest hardness and resilience, while SC showed the lowest texture except for springiness (p < .05). GC had the greatest L* and Delta E* values but the least a* value (p < .05). Esters (7), alcohols (7), acids (9), aldehydes (8), ketones (1), hydrocarbons (4), and others (5) were identified by GC-MS in all samples. E-nose analysis showed a remarkable difference in the overall aroma profile among all samples. Sensory evaluation and PCA analysis indicated that grass carp could be used as an alternative raw material for Suan yu production, which would improve the utilization of freshwater fish. Practical applications Suan yu is a type of Chinese traditional fermented freshwater fish with a unique flavor, which is popular among consumers. Such products are commonly manufactured from fresh common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with long-term anaerobic fermentation. Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are popular among consumers as major domesticated fish in China with higher annual harvests than that of common carp, which show potential as raw materials for Suan yu production. It is the first time to investigate the texture, color, and aroma of Suan yu produced from the three carp species (grass carp, silver carp, and common carp) in the same process and to evaluate their quality differences and acceptability. This will help increase the sources of raw materials for Suan yu production and improve the utilization of freshwater fish. A method for one-pot preparation of Julia-Kocienski sulfides and sulfones from alcohols and thiols is reported. A variety of primary alcohols were converted to the corresponding mesylates by methansulfonyl chloride and triethylamine in THF. After the reaction is complete, thiol (1 or 10) and either NaH or t-BuOK were added. The Julia-Kocienski sulfides 3, 9 and 11 were prepared by one-pot two steps procedure from alcohols in 76-96% yields (16 examples). Furthermore, after the sulfide formation, the reaction mixture was neutralized by p-toluenesulfonic acid and treated with H2O2 and ammonium molybdate in EtOH to give the Julia-Kocienski sulfones 4 in good yields except for trans-2-hexen-1-ol. BACKGROUNDThere is a restricted knowledge about the potential impact of the use of different wood chip species on the rose wine aging process. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the general phenolic parameters, aroma composition and sensory profile of rose wines during a short maturation (20 aging days) in contact with wood chips from oak, acacia and cherry. In addition, the different wood chips were added to a rose wine without a previous clarification process (unfined wine) and to a rose wine submitted to a clarification process (fined wine). RESULTSFor the brief maturation time considered, the use of different wood chips induced a tendency for an increase of phenolic content, in particular for unfined rose wine aged in contact with acacia chips. For volatile composition, the differentiation was clearer for aldehyde compounds group. Regarding sensorial overall appreciation the panel test preferred the unfined rose wine aged in contact with acacia wood chips. CONCLUSIONSThe results show that, in general, the use of different wood chip species (acacia, cherry and oak) for a brief maturation time of rose wines could play an important role in rose wine characteristics, in particular in their phenolic composition. Chocolate made from small-batch production is known for distinct sensory properties that differentiate its products from large-scale production. Specifically, small-batch processing includes a melanging step, a chocolate refining (a process involving time and temperature to refine texture and flavor) process that occurs in a stone wet-grinder. Chocolatiers understand that melanging is essential to flavor and overall quality, however the influence of melanging on the aroma chemistry of the finished chocolate is anecdotal and largely uncharacterized. Here, we evaluated the effects of time and temperature of melanging on the volatile chemistry of the finished chocolate. Specifically, chocolate aroma was profiled using HS/SPME-GC-MS for three different time and temperature combinations. A total of 88 compounds were annotated by mass spectrometry and included a diverse set of chemical classes such as pyrazines, aldehydes, terpenes, alcohols, esters, and ketones. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis (PCA), and partial least squares analysis (PLS) revealed that the overall aroma profile was influenced by the type of melanging, and time had a greater effect than temperature. Example compounds affected by time include 2-methylpropanal, dimethyl sulfide, and benzaldehyde. Particle size was also measured for each sample. Majority particle size was found to be below 25 microns generally at all time points beyond 8 h. Analysis showed significant p-values for the temperature variable for several compounds, but significant p-values for the time variable were apparent for a greater number of compounds. For compounds which showed dependency on both time and temperature, the p-value for the time variable was much smaller in most cases. Both PCA and OPLS analyses suggested the same trends. These data support that time is a critical factor in determining the aroma chemistry of chocolate and affects a diverse set of known flavor active compounds.

Polysiloxanes containing phenyl functional groups are a class of promising polymer materials with enhanced low-temperature flexibility, high-temperature stability and great damping properties. In this context, organic cyclic trimeric phosphazene bases (CTPBs) have been proved to be highly efficient for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and the copolymerization of D4 with octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane (P4) under mild conditions. The polymerizations are fast and the resulting polymers have high molecular weights (Mn up to 1353 kg mol-1). The molecular structures of the obtained copolysiloxanes were characterized by 1H NMR and 29Si NMR, which demonstrate that as high as 64 mol% diphenyl siloxane units can be incorporated within the copolysiloxane chain. Remarkably, copolysiloxanes with different contents of the diphenyl siloxane group are found free of T-branches and Q-branches based on the 29Si NMR analysis, indicating a good controlled ROP by the current organocatalytic system. DSC analysis shows no crystallization exotherm or melting endotherm in the range of -70 degrees C to 50 degrees C for all the copolysiloxanes, confirming that incorporation of diphenyl groups successfully suppresses the undesirable crystallization of polydimethylsiloxane. Moreover, the thermal stability of copolysiloxanes was evaluated by TGA, showing dramatically enhanced thermal stability with the increment of the diphenyl siloxane content.

A series of iminophosphorane-thiourea/urea bifunctional catalysts was synthesized and utilized for the isoselective ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide. The ROPs were promoted efficiently, affording the polylactides with controlled molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution and well-defined end groups without undesired side reactions. The experiment data revealed that ROPs of rac-LA are a controlled/living process. The highest stereoselectivity (P-m) was up to 0.80 using rac-IPU-1 under mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic study indicated that stereoselective ROPs of rac-LA were mainly controlled by a chain-end control mechanism when using rac/(R,R)-IPTU-1/IPU-1 as catalysts. Additionally, the ee values of -11% at 0 degrees C and -17% at -40 degrees C were achieved at about 50% conversion using (S)-IPU-2 as a chiral catalyst. The selectivity factor (s = k(L)/k(D)) of 1.6 indicated that a clear kinetic resolution occurred and the enantiomorphic site control mechanism was involved.

After a quantitative evaluation of the kinetics of elementary steps, it was concluded that both AlCl3 and Na2CO3 promoted protons assisted C-O bond scission in H2O, whereas alkaline enhanced the dehydration of produced 2-phenylethanol. Kinetic and isotope labeling experiments demonstrated that the hydrolytic rates of PEB were first order with respect to substrate concentrations, hydrolytic cleavage of C-O bond was rate-determining step. The study shed light on the promotional effects and hydrolytic mechanism over acid/base-catalyzed lignin depolymerization in water.
