We report a redox-neutral method for nucleophilic fluorination of N-hydroxyphthalimide esters using an Ir photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The method provides access to a broad range of aliphatic fluorides, including primary, secondary, and tertiary benzylic fluorides as well as unactivated tertiary fluorides, that are typically inaccessible by nucleophilic fluorination due to competing elimination. In addition, we show that the decarboxylative fluorination conditions are readily adapted to radiofluorination with [F-18]KF. We propose that the reactions proceed by two electron transfers between the Ir catalyst and redox-active ester substrate to afford a carbocation intermediate that undergoes subsequent trapping by fluoride. Examples of trapping with O- and C-centered nucleophiles and deoxyfluorination via N-hydroxyphthalimidoyl oxalates are also presented, suggesting that this approach may offer a general blueprint for affecting redox-neutral S(N)1 substitutions under mild conditions.

Particle-stabilized emulsion systems have been developed to address the problematic properties of conventional surfactants. However, the nature and properties of the fine particles used in such systems remain a critical issue for stability enhancement. Herein, we describe a thermoswitchable oil-in-water (O/W) particle-stabilized emulsion that exhibits improved stability due to the addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) modified with poly[2-isopropoxy-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane] (PIPP), which exhibits relatively good biocompatibility and biodegradability. Various parameters, such as surface activity, concentration of particles, polarity of solvents, and temperatures, on the formation of emulsions with CNCs grafted with PIPP (CNC-g-PIPP) were investigated. Results showed that the surface activity of CNC-g-PIPP was significantly improved compared with the unmodified material. Heptane-in-water particle-stabilized emulsions with CNC-g-PIPP were stably formed, and the effect of temperature on the stability of the emulsions was characterized. CNC-g-PIPP exhibited function as an effective particulate emulsifier at 4 degrees C because of the strong adsorption at the oil-water interface. However, the emulsions rapidly disintegrated at 45 degrees C, which is above the low critical solution temperature of PIPP on CNC, as the hydrophobized CNC-g-PIPP desorbed from the oil-water interface. Based on these findings, a thermally induced reversible emulsification/demulsification was presented. The resulting switchable particle-stabilized emulsion based on CNC-g-PIPP shows promise for the ability to control the stability of an emulsion in response to temperature, which is attractive for use in biological applications.

Both value-added utilization of low-rank renewable feedstocks to prepare catalytic materials and selective transformation of bioderived aldehydes are very attractive topics. Herein, lignosulfonate, a waste by-product from the paper industry, was simply assembled with ZrCl4 under non-toxic hydrothermal conditions for scalable preparation of Zr-containing polyphenolic biopolymer catalysts (Zr-LS). Systematic characterizations indicated that the strong coordination between Zr4+ and phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignosulfonate led to the formation of strong Lewis acid-base couple sites (Zr4+-O2-) and porous inorganic-organic framework structure (mesopores centered at 6.1 nm), while the inherent sulfonic groups in lignosulphonate could serve as Bronsted acidic sites. The cooperative role of these versatile acid-base sites in Zr-LS afforded excellent catalytic performance for Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reaction of a broad range of bioderived platform chemicals under mild conditions (80 degrees C), especially of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FA), in quantitative yields (96%) with high FA formation rate of 9600 mu mol g(-1)h(-1) and TOF of 4.37 h(-1). Kinetic studies revealed that the activation energy of the MPV reduction of FF was as low as 52.25 kJ/mol, accounting for the high reaction rate. Isotopic labelling experiments demonstrated direct hydrogen transfer from the alpha-C of 2-PrOH to the alpha-C of FF on acid-base sites was the rate-determining step. Moreover, Zr-LS showed good recyclability for at least seven reaction cycles.

Vitis vinifera cv. Narince is a Turkish native white grape variety. In this study, volatile and sensory properties of Narince wines that are produced with autochthonous Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) strains and commercial strain were compared. Autochthonous yeast strains 1044 (MG017575), 1088 (MG017577), and 1281 (MG017581) were previously isolated from spontaneous fermentations of Narince grapes. Volatile compounds formed in wines were extracted using a liquid-liquid extraction method and determined by GC-MS-FID. All yeast strains fermented Narince grape juice to dryness. The differences between the volatile profiles of the yeast strains were determined. Wines fermented with autochthonous strains 1281 and 1044 produced a higher amount of acetates and ethyl esters. While the highest concentrations of ethyl hexanoate and hexyl acetate were found in wine fermented with 1044, the highest concentrations of ethyl octanoate, ethyl decanoate, isoamyl acetate, and 2-phenylethyl acetate were found in wine fermented with strain 1281. Also, the highest contents of 2-phenyl ethanol and linalool were found in wine fermented with strain 1281. According to sensory analysis, the wine fermented with 1281 achieved the best scores in floral and fruity attributes, as well as balance and global impression. The data obtained in the present study showed that autochthonous yeast strains affect the final physicochemical composition and sensory profile of Narince wines.

alpha-Diimine niobium complexes serve as catalysts for deoxygenation of benzyl ethers by silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) to cleanly give two equivalents of the corresponding benzyl chlorides, where SiCl4 has the dual function of oxygen scavenger and chloride source with the formation of a silyl ether or silica as the only byproduct. The reaction mechanism has two successive trans-etherification steps that are mediated by the niobium catalyst, first forming one equivalent of benzyl chloride along with the corresponding silyl ether intermediate that undergoes the same reaction pathway to give the second equivalent of benzyl chloride and silyl ether.

Hexacoordinated non-heme iron complexes [Fe-II(L-1)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1) and [Fe-II(L-2)(2)](PF6)(2) (2) have been synthesized using ligands L-1 = (E)-2-chloro-6-(2-(pyridin-2ylmethylene) hydrazinyl)pyridine and L-2 = (E)-2-chloro-6-(2-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl) pyridine]. These complexes are highly active non-heme iron catalysts to catalyze the C (sp(3))-H bonds of alkanes. These iron complexes have been characterized using ESI-MS analysis and molecular structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. ESI – MS analysis also helped to understand the generation of intermediate species like Fe-III-OOH and Fe-IV=O. DFT and TD-DFT calculations revealed that the oxidation reactions were performed through high-valent iron center and a probable reaction mechanism was proposed. These complexes were also utilized for the degradation of orange II and methylene blue dyes.

The use of non-Saccharomyces yeast in conjunction with Saccharomyces cerevisiae in wine fermentation is a growing trend in the wine industry. Non-Saccharomyces, through their distinctive production of secondary metabolites, have the potential to positively contribute to wine sensory profile. To discover new candidate strains for development as starter cultures, indigenous non-Saccharomyces were isolated from un-inoculated fermenting Shiraz musts from a South Australian vineyard (McLaren Vale wine region) and characterised. Among the 77 isolates, 7 species belonging to 5 genera (Kazachstartia, Aureobasidium, Meyerozyma, Wickerhamomyces and Torulaspora) were identified by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer regions of the 5.8S rRNA gene (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region). The indigenous isolates were evaluated for oenological properties, namely, ethanol tolerance, enzyme activity, and H2S production. To determine their potential industrial use as starter cultures, representative isolates of each species were assessed in a sterile chemically defined grape juice and Viognier grape juice to evaluate their contribution to fermentation kinetics and production of key metabolites, including volatile compounds.

As a promising biodegradable and biorenewable alternative to ubiquitous petrochemical plastics, poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) can be widely employed in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. In this work, triblock copolymers, poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(2-methyl-1,3-propanediyl adipate)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PLLA-b-PMPA-b-PLLA)s, were synthesized by two-step polymerization from 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (MP), adipic acid (AA) and L-lactide (LLA) as new biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers. The copolymers exhibited glass-transition temperature at below -40 degrees C and melting temperature at 140-160 degrees C. These copolymers showed much higher elongation at break and lower tensile modulus than those of PLLA. Enzymatic degradation tests of the obtained copolymers were performed using proteinase K and lipase PS as catalysts in hydrolysis reaction to demonstrate rapid degradation for these copolymers. Seawater biodegradability test was conducted for 28 days for each sample. The triblock copolymer and PMPA homopolymer were found to show about 50% biodegradation within 28 days representing very high biodegradable property in sea-water. (C) 2020 The Authors. In this study, the volatile compounds produced by 11 Pichia manshurica strains-isolated from spoiled bottled organic wines of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and filter membranes-were evaluated in must and wine. Moreover, a quick, reliable and inexpensive method to identify this spoilage species was reported. In particular, a species-specific primer pair was developed using 26S rRNA as target gene. Primers were tested on different yeast species and a band of 300 bp was obtained only for P. manshurica strains. More than 70 volatile compounds were identified. The differences were quantitative rather than qualitative and the majority of the strains released compounds associated with off-flavours and off-odours in must and wine. The obtained data revealed the ability of P. manshurica strains to release compounds which could produce off-flavours and odours.
