Presented here is a highly efficient procedure for the selective hydrogenation of aldehydes in the presence of ketones and its application in equilibrium displacement in a one-enzyme procedure catalysed by.-transaminase. A palladium-based heterogeneous catalyst was chemically synthesized from K2PdCl4 and 1,1′-binaphthyl-2,2′-ylenediamine and found to be suitable for selective hydrogenation of aldehydes using H2 of 1 atm, with a wide spectrum of aldehydes being efficiently and selectively reduced to the corresponding alcohols with a selectivity of up to 99%. This catalyst and its developed procedure can be successfully applied in pushing the equilibrium to product formation during transamination in a.-transaminase-promoted one-enzyme procedure via hydrogenation of the co-product, and an array of chiral amines was afforded in good to excellent yields of up to 99% with ees of up to > 99%.

Sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) meat has not been fully utilised due to quality defects which were raised by Chinese sturgeon processing industry. This study was aimed to develop a high-quality sturgeon meat product and the effect of fermentation on qualities was studied. Results showed that fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae could enhance ‘mushroom’, ‘fruity’ and ‘chocolate’ flavour by 1-octen-3-ol, ethyl acetate and 3-methyl-butanal; and enrich flavour through mild lipid oxidation and hydrolysis. In addition, fermentation could give an attractive colour with higher a*, b* and L* value. Texture properties were also improved with higher hardness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness. Higher free amino acids, TCA-soluble peptides and taste score in fermented sturgeon meat indicated better flavour and taste. The organoleptic evaluation suggested an overall satisfactory of wine-aroma sturgeon meat by fermentation with S. cerevisiae.

A novel facile synthetic method for producing diphenylmethyl (DPM) ethers from 2-diphenylmethoxypyridine was developed. A variety of DPM ethers was successfully achieved with high yield via treatment of alcohols with 2-diphenylmethoxypyridine in the presence of catalytic FeCl3. The procedure is a practical and efficient synthetic procedure to protect various alcohols, and it can be applied to prepare bioactive compounds.

Photocatalytic membrane coupled to biodegradation offers potential for degrading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in photocatalytic membrane biofilm reactor. An intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation reactor was operated in continuous operation for 500 days to treat simulated waste gas containing toluene. Toluene removal efficiency obtained 99%, with the elimination capacity of 550 g m(-3).h(-1). Membrane photocatalysis coupled to biodegradation was created to improve toluene removal from 11 to 20%. The dominant genera were Lysinibacillus, Hydrogenophctga, Pseudomonas at 30 d, Rudaea, Dongia, Litorilinea at 230 d xyl, Tod, Tcb, Bed, Tmo, Thu, Tou, Dmp, Cat were functional genes of toluene metabolism, as shown by16S rDNA and metagenomic sequencing. Photocatalysis destroyed part of the toluene into biodegradable intermediates that were immediately mineralized by microorganisms in biofilm, some toluene was directly degraded by toluene degrading bacterial community into carbon dioxide and water. The novel hybrid photocatalytic membrane biofilm reactor is a cost-effective and robust alternative to VOCs treatment.

To overcome the limitation of traditional photoluminescent materials, a cost-effective photoluminescence polymer was synthesized by a simple and one-step technique using benzyl alcohol as the starting material and aqueous sulfuric acid as the catalyst. The synthesized photoluminescent polymer showed photoluminescence properties independent of the excitation wavelength together with high thermal stability and excellent mechanical properties. The synthesized photoluminescent polymer was incorporated into different polymers viz. thermoplastic as well as thermoset polymers by melt and solution processes, respectively, to achieve photoluminescent polymer blends. The thermal, mechanical, and photoluminescent properties of the fabricated blends were improved or remained almost the same with the photoluminescence polymer contents, strongly proving that the photoluminescent polymer was well dispersed in the polymeric matrix. The potential applications of the photoluminescence polymer blends were investigated for 3D printing and a fluorescent ink. The study paves a way for the development of photoluminescent materials for various applications.

Herein, we describe novel iron-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation between alcohols and 1-(2-nitrophenyl)pyrroles for the synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-alpha]quinoxalines. The tricarbonyl (eta(4)-cyclopentadienone) iron complex catalyzed the oxidation of alcohols and the reduction of nitroarenes, and the corresponding aldehydes and aniline were generated in situ. The resulting Pictet-Spengler-type annulation/oxidation completed the quinoxaline structure formation. The protocol tolerated various kinds of functional groups and provided 29 samples of 4-substituted pyrrolo[1,2-alpha]quinoxalines. The developed method was also applied for the synthesis of additional polyheterocycles.

Four new barringtogenol C-type triterpenoid saponins, namely acerplatanosides A – D ( 1 – 4 ), along with 22 known compounds ( 5 – 26 ), were isolated from the stem bark of Norway maple ( Acer platanoides ). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic analyses and chemical hydrolysis. This is the first report of triterpenoid saponins isolated from Norway maple. Compounds 1, 3 , and 4 showed cytotoxicity against 4 human cancer cell lines with IC (50) values ranging from 9.4 to 39.5 mu M.

Self-supported aerogel composed of carbon nitride nanolayers can act as a bifunctional photocatalyst and show enhanced photoreduction and photooxidation performance due to the large surface areas and nitrogen vacancies. The carbon nitride aerogel can catalyze hydrogen evolution at a rate of nearly 4.2 mmol h(-1) g(-1) and oxidize benzyl alcohols with a high conversion efficiency and selectivity under milder conditions. Note that the activity of carbon nitride aerogel for photochemical alcohol oxidation shows outstanding performance compared with carbon nitride based photocatalysts. Both density functional theory and experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of nitrogen vacancies within the carbon nitride aerogel contributes to the formation of a crooked structure and enhanced adsorption of oxygen compared with a bulk sample.

Herein we disclosed the use of a remote ‘imidazole’-based precatalyst [(para-cymene)Ru-II(L)Cl](+), C-1 where L=2-(4-substituted-phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f]([1,10]) phenanthroline) for the selective oxidation of a variety of alkyl arenes/heteroarenes and alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes or ketones in presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). The remote ‘imidazole’ moiety present in the complex facilitates the activation of oxidant and subsequent generation of active species via the release of para-cymene from C-1, which in-turn was less effective without the ‘imidazole’ moiety. The mechanistic features of C-1 promoted oxidation of alkyl arenes were also assessed from spectroscopic, kinetic, and few control experiments. The substrate scope for C-1 promoted oxidation reaction was assessed based on the selective oxidation of 27-different alkyl arenes/heteroarenes and 25 different alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes/ketones in moderate to good yields.
