Three isostructural Zr metal-organic frameworks have been synthesized from (PNP)-N-N-P-N-Ru pincer metallolinkers bearing different combinations of ancillary ligands (1, Zr6O4(OH)(4)(-OAc)(4){cis-((PNP)-N-N-P-N)RuCl2(CO)}(2); 2, Zr6O4(OH)(4)(O2CH)(4)-{ ((PNP)-N-N-P-N)RuCl(CO)(2)}(2)Cl-2; 3, Zr6O4(OH)(4)(OAc)(4){cis-/trans-((PNP)-N-N-P-N)RUCl2(CO)}(2); (PNP)-N-N-P-N = 2,6-(FINPAr2)(2)C5H3N; Ar = p-C6H4CO2-). The structure and composition of the (PNP)-N-N-P-N-Ru pincer MOFs have been determined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, solid- and solution-state NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Reaction of 2 with (KOBu)-Bu-t results in deprotonation of an NH group of the (PNP)-N-N-P-N-RuCl(CO)(2) linkers. Subsequent treatment with Me3NO removes a Ru-coordinated CO ligand, generating 2-b, which proved to be a recyclable catalyst for the hydrosilylation of aryl aldehydes with Et3SiH. A similar postsynthetic treatment of 1 and 3 does not generate active catalysts, highlighting the importance of precatalyst design and activation. A homogeneous analogue of 2-b also showed inferior catalytic performance, demonstrating the benefit of catalyst immobilization.

The essential oil of wintergreen, which is extracted by steam distillation from Gaultheria genus leaves, is mainly used in aromatherapy. However, due to its adulteration easiness with synthetic material, it is necessary to control samples naturalness with accuracy. The purpose of this work was to develop a methodology to authenticate the essential oil of wintergreen. Wintergreen essential oil is composed of more than 99% methyl salicylate. This aromatic ester can be easily synthesized and used to adulterate wintergreen essential oil. Authentic wintergreen essential oil can be distinguished from adulterated oils by examining their compositions. The detection of methyl salicylate synthetic marker compounds (methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, dimethyl 4-hydroxyisophthalate or dimethyl 2-hydroxyisophthalate) or the absence of several naturally occurring minor secondary metabolites (ethyl salicylate and vitispirane) contribute to the authentication. Isotopic values of bulk wintergreen essential oil have also been determined using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS): the delta C-13 values of authentic samples range from -36.78 to -33.36 parts per thousand, the delta H-2 values range from -173 to -115 parts per thousand and the delta O-18 values range from -1.3 to 5.7 parts per thousand. However, these analytical methods cannot account for the natural variability in the essential oils. To determine the boundaries of the natural isotopic values, C-14 radioactive isotope activity assessment was undertaken, which allows for the determination of the genuineness of samples that are not assessed using multistable isotope approaches. Additional studies evaluating C-14 activity of a noncompliant sample using IRMS identified a C-14-labeled synthetic methyl salicylate adulteration.

This study was aimed to identify volatile compounds of 31 green coffee bean samples and evalute their correlation with altitude of the coffee plants grown in two zones (Gedeo and Jimma) in Ethiopia. A total of 81 different compounds were detected. The contents of dominant volatile compounds in green coffee beans were in the range: trans-linalooloxide (3.24-19.13%), linalool (1.56-21.76%), 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol (2.34-15.08%) and cis-linalooloxide (1.03-13.27%). In addition, benzene acetaldehyde (0.45-10.97%), 2-heptanol (0.67-8.49%), alpha-terpineol (0.64-6.52%), phenylethyl alcohol (0.44-4.98%) and furfural (0.92-5.3%) were the next dominant compounds. The volatile compounds identified in the green coffee beans are groups of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, pyrazines, pyridines, and furans. The volatile compounds in green coffee beans showed either weak positive or weak negative correlation with the altitude of coffee plants indicating that variation in altitude of the coffee plants does not significantly influence the volative compounds of green coffee beans.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to define the effects of the hulling process on the aroma and aroma-active composition of cv. Uzun pistachio. Four different hulling processes, namely wet, wet-dry, dry-dry and brine, were applied. In addition, solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE), simultaneous distillation/extraction (SDE) and purge and trap (P&T) extraction methods were also tested to obtain the best representative aroma extract. RESULTS The results revealed that the dry-dry hulling method was the most prominent according to the aroma and aroma-active compounds, and this was especially the case with terpene compounds. The method increased the content of terpenes, pyrazines and total aroma compounds. By application of aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA), a total of 18 compounds were detected, of which 11 were identified for the first time in the fruit of pistachio. 2,3-Dimethylpyrazine, trimethylpyrazine and 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazine were the compounds that had the highest flavour dilution factors. CONCLUSION In general, the results of the present research indicated that the hulling method highly affected the overall aroma structure of pistachios. The dry-dry hulling method is therefore suggested to manufacturers to obtain better pistachios with rich and high-quality aroma. (c) 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Fenghuang Dancong tea covers the oolong tea category and is widely acknowledged for its unique floral and honey flavor. In order to characterize the volatile components in nine different aroma types of Fenghuang Dancong tea, the Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC- MS) were employed. In addition, the similarity analysis and cluster analysis (CA) were performed to compare the aroma characteristics and establish the correlation between the nine types of teas. The principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) method were employed to determine the volatile components with a high contribution to the overall aroma of each type of tea. The results presented a total of 122 volatile aroma components including 24 kinds of alcohol, 23 kinds of esters, 15 kinds of olefins, 12 kinds of aldehydes, 12 kinds of ketones, 13 kinds of alkanes and 23 kinds of other components from the nine types of Fenghuang Dancong tea. Of these volatile aroma components, 22 types were common with linalool, dehydrolinalool, linalool oxide I, linalool oxide II, etc. The similarity of the nine types of Fenghuang Dancong tea was found between 46.79% and 95.94%. The CA indicated that the nine types of Fenghuang Dancong tea could be clustered into four categories when the ordinate distance reached to 10. The PCA demonstrated that decane, octadecane, 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane, dehydrolinalool, geraniol and nerol were the important aroma components to Fenghuang Dancong Tea. OPLS-DA proved that 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane, dehydrolinalool, phenylacetaldehyde, nerolidol, linalool oxide I and hexanal were the key differential compounds between the various types of tea samples. This study provides a theoretical basis for characterizing the volatile aroma components in the main types of Fenghuang Dancong tea as well as the similarity and correlation between various types of Fenghuang Dancong tea.

Naloxone is an opioid antagonist with high affinity for -opioid receptor, and for this reason it is used for the emergency treatment of opioid overdose. Originally, it was available only as an injectable product. However, for the ease of administration, intranasal (IN) formulations have also become available. These IN formulations contain preservatives and stabilizers such as benzalkonium chloride (BKC), benzyl alcohol (BA), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Some of these ingredients are known to affect permeability of drugs. This study focuses on investigating the effect of formulation variables including choice of preservatives, stabilizer, and pH on the permeability and stability of naloxone IN formulations. The in vitro permeability of naloxone was evaluated employing EpiAirway tissue-mounted Ussing chambers. BKC was found to enhance the apparent permeability (P-app) of naloxone significantly (p<0.05) at very low concentration, while BA caused similar enhancement at a much higher concentration. EDTA was found to decrease P-app of naloxone by lowering the pH, and the P-app of naloxone was found to decrease approximately 51-fold with the decrease in formulation pH from 6.0 to 4.0. The product stability was, however, found optimal only below pH 5.0. Thus, selection of formulation ingredients, buffering agent, and pH of IN formulation is a balancing act for achieving desired permeability and optimal stability to achieve reasonable shelf life of naloxone IN formulation. A facile and efficient protocol for palladium-catalyzed ortho-acylation of azoxybenzenes has been developed under aqueous conditions. In this process, the alcohols were oxidized into the corresponding aldehydes in situ, which coupled with azoxybenzenes with excellent regioselectivity, affording the acylated azoxybenzenes in moderate to good yields. A variety of functional groups were tolerated in this procedure.

For decades the steric effect was still ambiguously understood in catalytic benzylation reactions of arenes with benzyl alcohol, which limited the green synthesis of phenylmethane derivates in industrial scale. This research applies a series of silica-alumina beta zeolites to systematically evaluate factors like catalyst porosity, reactants molecule size, and reaction temperature on catalytic benzylation. First, a suitable hierarchical beta zeolite catalyst was screened out by X-ray powder diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption, and probe benzylation with p-xylene. In the following substrates expanding study, for a typical benzylation of benzene, it showed extraordinary performance among literature reported ones that the conversion was 98% while selectivity was 90% at 353 K only after 10 min. The steric effect of aromatics with different molecular sizes on benzylation was observed. The reaction activities of four different aromatics followed the order: benzene > toluene > p-xylene > mesitylene. Combined with macroscopic kinetic analysis, this comprehensive study points out for the first time that the nature of this steric effect was dominated by the relative adsorption efficiency of different guest aromatic molecules on the host zeolite surface.

The cubic In(OH)(3)/ZnIn2S4 heterostructures were successfully synthesized via a simple strategy of post-treatment of cubic ZnIn2S4 (C-ZIS), and their structures and properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). According to the results, the tofu-like In(OH)(3) semiconductor as a new crystal phase appeared in the matrix of C-ZIS and formed a In(OH)(3)/ZnIn2S4 heterostructure. Compared with pure C-ZIS, the heterostructure exhibits higher photocatalytic activity towards selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under visible light. The In(OH)(3) /ZnIn2S4 heterostructure manifests the best and the highest photocatalytic performance via 18 h post-treatment, which achieved nearly 100% selectivity, 35.5% conversion and 34.5% yield. This is ascribed to the formation of In(OH)(3)/ZnIn2S4 heterostructure to promote the transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and thus efficiently inhibits their recombination, leading to the longer lifetime of photo-induced carriers. Furthermore, a possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed and discussed. Our current work could boost more interest in researching the semiconductor materials of ternary chalcogenides and enlarging the applications based on cubic ZnIn2S4 heterostructure as visible-light-driven photocatalyst.
