Piperine has been associated with neuroprotective effects and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition, thus being an attractive scaffold to develop new antiparkinsonian agents. Accordingly, we prepared a small library of piperine derivatives and screened the inhibitory activities towards human MAO isoforms (hMAO-A and hMAO-B). Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies pointed out that the combination of alpha-cyano and benzyl ester groups increased both potency and selectivity towards hMAO-B. Kinetic experiments with compounds 7, 10 and 15 indicated a competitive hMAO-B inhibition mechanism. Compounds 15 and 16, at 10 mu M, caused a small but significant decrease in P-gp efflux activity in Caco-2 cells. Compound 15 stands out as the most potent piperine-based hMAO-B inhibitor (IC50 = 47.4 nM), displaying favourable drug-like properties and a broad safety window. In the present investigation, green synthesis of silver nanoparticles from plant extract of Ehretia laevis have been studied for their catalytic performance towards the oxidation of alcohols containing aromatic ring into the corresponding aldehydes. The synthesis of nanoparticles and purity was confirmed by UV-visible analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope analysis (TEM) and XRD analysis. SEM analysis showed cubical and relatively uniform shape of nanoparticles and XRD analysis revealed the face centred cubic system and crystalline nature of silver nanoparticle (AgNPs). The excellent catalytic oxidation process of aromatic alcohols by silver nanoparticles offered the merit of being a short reaction time, efficient, easy and clean synthetic path. The remarkable activity of the catalyst was exhibited without the significant loss. The catalytic route suggests the notable features of green approach, higher yields and recyclability. Benzaldehyde byproduct is an imperative intermediate in the production of fine chemicals and additives. Tuning selectivity to benzaldehyde is therefore critical in alcohol oxidation reactions at the industrial level. Herein, we report a simple but innovative method for the synthesis of palladium hydride and nickel palladium hydride nanodendrites with controllable morphology, high stability, and excellent catalytic activity. The synthesized dendrites can maintain the palladium hydride phase even after their use in the chosen catalytic reaction. Remarkably, the high surface area morphology and unique interaction between nickel-rich surface and palladium hydride (-phase) of these nanodendrites are translated in an enhanced catalytic activity for benzyl alcohol oxidation reaction. Our Ni/PdH0.43 nanodendrites demonstrated a high selectivity towards benzaldehyde of about 92.0% with a conversion rate of 95.4%, showing higher catalytic selectivity than their PdH0.43 counterparts and commercial Pd/C. The present study opens the door for further exploration of metal/metal-hydride nanostructures as next-generation catalytic materials.

The volatile compounds of peaches (Prunus persica L.) obtained from five cultivars (Chongyanghong, Y1; Ruiguang 19, Y2; Zaohongxia, Y3; Zaohong 2, Y4; and Wuyuehuo, Y5) were analyzed by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and GC-flame photometric detection (FPD). A total of 40 odor-active volatile compounds were observed in the GC-O experiments. Amongst those compounds, hexanal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (E)-2-hexenal, 3-mercaptohexanol, nonanal, -nonalactone, and -decalactone contributed greatly to aroma of peach. In addition, thirty-four quantified compounds were demonstrated as important odorants according to odor activity values (OAVs>1). Amongst these compounds, hexanal (OAV: 28-89), pentanal (OAV: 9-16), (E)-2-heptenal (OAV: 19-60), (E)-2-hexenal (OAV: 26-86), (E)-2-octenal (OAV: 10-42), (E)-2-nonenal (OAV: 8-94), -decalactone (OAV: 13-34), -decalactone (OAV: 2-19), (R)-(-)-linalool (OAV: 29-76) and phenyl acetaldehyde (OAV: 4-59) were the most powerful compounds in five varieties of peach.

Hybrid Co3O4/MnO2 nanotube-based catalysts were prepared by a simple hydrothermal synthesis method. The physico-chemical properties of Co3O4/MnO2 catalyst were then studied by different characterization techniques, namely, SEM, TEM and HR-TEM, XRD, BET surface area, XPS and H-2-TPR. The hybrid catalyst showed superior catalytic performance toward benzyl alcohol oxidation than pure MnO2 nanotubes and Co3O4 nanoparticles. The uniform dispersion of Co3O4 nanoparticles, good redox behaviour, the variable oxidation states of manganese and cobalt (Mn3+/4+ or Co3+/2+) as well as the abundance of active surface oxygen species were responsible for such a high catalytic activity.

Decomposition of bodies generates several types of polar volatile organic compounds (VOCs), whose types, patterns and ratios change during the various stages of decomposition and, therefore, their determination has huge potential to provide useful information to disclose events related to the time of death, or body surrounding environment. As sample preparation is a mandatory key-point in a method development, this research aims to develop a simple, accurate and rapid approach to study death-related polar VOCs based on headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (GC x GC-ToFMS) analysis. The performance of zwitterionic PIL-based fibers (containing a [VIm(+)C(9)COO(-)] monomer and a [(VIm)(2)Cl-2(2)+]-2Br(-) crosslinker), tailored for polar compounds, was evaluated for a set of 19 analytes associated with the unique odour created by decomposing bodies, and it was compared to the commercially-available fibers: divinylbenzene/carboxen/poly(dimethylsiloxane) – DVB/CAR/PDMS, poly(dimethylsiloxane)/divinylbenzene – PDMS/DVB and polyacrylate (PA). Fibers with absorptive-type mechanism, such as PA and PIL, showed the best results in the balance of the parameters studied, being able to detect analytes at ng level and providing a profile representative of the headspace composition, thus they may represent a useful tool to respond to current challenges in forensic taphonomy. The reproducibility (with relative standard deviation lower than 18%, depending on the analyte) and relative recoveries (higher than 99.1%) were similar and acceptable for both fibers. The zwitterionic PIL, with ca. 4 times smaller film thickness than PA, still has potential to have the best performance, supported by the efforts to obtain thicker sorbent coatings.

The effective and economically feasible tandem synthesis of gamma-valerolactone (GVL), a renowned bio-based platform molecule with great promising applications in the production of drop-in chemicals, liquid fuels and polymers, is significantly vital and challenging. Herein, we for the first time describe a direct and effective catalytic system based on ZrOCl2 center dot 8H(2)O capable of facilitating the one-pot one-step tandem synthesis of GVL from bio-based furfural or furfuryl alcohol in 2-propanol by integrating sequential transfer hydrogenation, ring-opening, and transfer hydrogenation-cyclization reactions. A maximum GVL yield of 63.3% and 52.1% was achieved from furfuryl alcohol and furfural at 200 degrees C, respectively. The synergistic effect of [ZrO(OH)(2)](n)center dot xH(2)O species and Bronsted acid species H+, derived from in situ hydrolysis of ZrOCl2 center dot 8H(2)O, is accountable for its remarkable catalytic performance. Moreover, calcination of the leftover solid after tandem synthesis of GVL could fabricate a hollow microrod ZrO2 material, in which the formation of a microrod morphology and hollow structure was probably attributed to the electrostatic repulsion forces among particles in the alcohol solution and removal of generated humins/coke during the reactions within collected solids via calcination, respectively. Importantly, hollow microrod ZrO2 innovatively featuring a high BET surface area, a large amount of acid-base sites and facile active-site accessibility thereby exhibited a superior performance in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of biomass-derived aldehydes or ketones to ZrO2 prepared by the precipitation method.

ZnTi-LDH nanosheets have been synthesized as photocatalysts for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) to benzaldehyde (BAD) under visible light irradiation. Based on UV-vis DRS, in-situ FTIR and XPS results, it was revealed that BA would be efficiently chemisorbed and activated on ZnTi-LDH forming the surface coordination species, which contributed to harvesting visible light and induced the photocatalytic reaction. The ESR spectra suggested that oxygen vacancies would be produced in ZnTi-LDHs after the adsorption of BA molecules. More exposed surface OH groups would induce more oxygen vacancies, which would serve as the centers for capturing photoelectrons from the photoexcited surface coordination species and act as active sites for enhanced O-2 adsorption and activation, resulting outstanding photocatalytic activity. Finally, a possible mechanism was proposed to illustrate the photocatalytic process which mediated by surface coordination species formed by the interaction between ZnTi-LDH and BA.

A method for highly regio- and stereoselective intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck 5- exo cyclization of aryl iodides to the corresponding spirooxindoles has been developed. Electron-rich and electron-deficient aryl iodide precursors were selectively ring-closed with high stereoselectivity and good yields. The double-bond position in the cyclopentene ring was controlled by careful choice of reaction conditions. These rare spiro compounds were further functionalized to rigidified unnatural amino acid derivatives by a subsequent gas-free Pd(0)-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation, followed by selective O – and N -deprotections.
