A novel heterogeneous one-pot protocol is developed for tandem aerobic synthesis of benzimidazoles through dehydrogenative coupling of primary benzylic alcohols and aromatic diamines co-catalysed by Keplerate-type {Mo72V30} polyoxometalate and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The catalytic system also works well for the synthesis of benzimidazoles using benzaldehydes, as commonly used starting materials, in the absence of NHPI. The high activity of the solid nanocluster provides standard conditions avoiding current limitations of oxidation methods including high catalyst loadings. The spectral results and leaching experiments revealed that the nanocapsule preserved its structural integrity after being reused in consecutive runs.

Multicomponent reactions provide efficient means to access molecular complexity. Herein, we report a copper-catalyzed three-component reaction of diazo compounds, alcohols and ethynyl benziodoxole (EBX) reagents for the synthesis of propargyl ethers. Extensive variations of the three partners of the reaction is possible, leading to highly functionalized and structurally diverse products under mild conditions. Alkynylation of a copper ylide intermediate is postulated as key step for this transformation.

Supported metal catalysts have found broad applications in heterogeneous catalysis. In the conventional bifunctional catalyst, the active metal sites are associated with the metal nanoparticles, while the acid sites are usually localized over the oxide support. Herein, we report a novel type of supported metal bifunctional catalyst, which combined the advantages of the promotion and bifunctionality. The catalyst was designed by the pretreatment of supported palladium catalysts with bromobenzene. The promotion with bromine creates Bronsted acid sites, which are localized directly on the surface of metal nanoparticles. An intimacy between metal and acid functions in this bifunctional catalyst generates unique catalytic properties in hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to dimethylfuran, occurring with the yield up to 96% at ambient temperature under 5 bar of H-2. The catalyst exhibits stable catalytic performance.

The neutral trichloro[hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)methane]vanadium(III) [VCl3(Tpm)] (Tpm = HC(pz)(3); pz = pyrazolyl) C-scorpionate complex was immobilized on amine-functionalized mesoporous silica (aptesSBA-15) via an impregnation method forming the [VCl3(Tpm)]@aptesSBA-15 composite. The immobilization of the vanadium compound was confirmed by several characterization techniques, namely SEM/EDS, powder XRD, FT-IR/ATR, ICP and BET surface area analysis, revealing the successful incorporation of the complex, and confirming the structural and morphological preservation of the porous support and the vanadium complex. The vanadium composite was tested as heterogeneous catalyst for the peroxidative oxidation of benzyl alcohol under mild conditions and its catalytic performance was compared to that of the analogous homogeneous [VCl3(Tpm)] complex. The catalytic studies were extended to other substrates. The effect of various parameters, such as amount and type of oxidant, catalyst and additives, temperature and reaction time were investigated allowing to reach overall yields of ca. 60% and turnover numbers (TONs) up to ca. 7.6 x 10(3). The results obtained demonstrated the higher performance of the heterogeneous catalyst using much less [VCl3(Tpm)] complex under a solvent-free system. Furthermore, consecutive reaction cycles could be performed, showing its recycling capacity. Structural stability was also investigated, indicating the viability of the vanadium C-scorpionate composite as catalyst for other oxidative reactions with high industrial interest.

Based on our previous work on successful gelation of poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline)-grafted chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) with high polar media, in this study, we investigated the preparation and gelation behaviors of the ChNFs having different poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) graft chains, that is, poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline), poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline), and poly(2-butyl-2-oxazoline), with various disperse media. The grafting was carried out by reactions of living propagating ends of poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline)s with amino groups present on the self assembled ChNFs, which were obtained from a chitin ion gel. The products formed gels in the reaction mixtures, which could be converted into hydrogels. All the products with the three poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) graft chains formed gels with high polar media. Besides, gelation of the product with poly(2-butyl-2-oxazoline) was observed by immersing it in relatively non-polar media such as benzyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, and toluene. The formation process of network structures by the grafting of poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline)s on ChNFs is proposed to induce gelation of the products.

This study investigates the relationship between the molecular structure of lubricants and the appearance of anomalous film shapes in elastohydrodynamic lubrication conditions. A ball-on-disc type test rig was used, which produced a point contact area between a rotating glass disc and rotating steel ball. Several pure liquids such as alkanes, alcohols, and others with a single polar site were used as lubricants. Linear chain lubricants caused solid-like behaviour in the film formation, traction coefficient and flow out time of entrapped lubricant in shock loading tests whereas complexly shaped lubricants caused liquid-like behaviour. The clear dependence on lubricant type appears to indicate that the anomalous film shapes formed due to the solidification of the lubricant.

Surface stability of deposited sensing material is becoming a crucial issue in the field of opto-chemical sensor technology due to cracks/stresses. Porous silica-titania (ST) nanocomposite coating material is synthesized and doped with CdTe as transducers for sensing cyclic compounds. Ultra-thin coatings are obtained, similar to 11 nm for ST nanocomposite, and 5 nm for encapsulated and heat-treated samples. BET analysis shows large surface area similar to 441 m(2)/g +/- 3 m(2)/g and pore diameter 58 angstrom of ST nanocomposite. It decreases down to similar to 410 m(2)/g +/- 2 m(2)/g, and pore diameter to 24 angstrom, after encapsulation. However, after heat treatment, it again increases up to 419 m(2)/g +/- 2 m(2)/g and pore diameter to 38 angstrom. The sensitivity of 71.37 counts per unit change in the carbon chain with correlation determination coefficient R-2 similar to 0.89 at 468 nm is observed. The prepared sensor device shows excellent stability, signal-to-noise ratio, and good reversibility towards different hydrocarbons and non-hydrocarbons (inorganic materials).

Fangping green tea (FPGT) produced by Zhonghuang 1 (C. sinensis var. sinensis cv. Zhonghuang 1), a new tea variety, has a classical cooked corn-like aroma, which is completely different from the green tea aroma. In order to illustrate the aroma characteristics of the green tea, the volatiles of FPGT was analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O). The results showed that odor activity value (OAV) of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) was 1195.21 and the odor intensity about DMS was 6.2 in FPGT. Aroma recombination experiment also confirmed the important contribution of DMS to cooked corn-like aroma. Aroma character impact (ACI) values of DMS in tea processed by Zhonghuang 1 and Fudingdabai were 72.01% and 37.86%, respectively. This indicated that the high proportion of DMS was the dominant character of green tea with cooked corn-like aroma. In addition, the S-methylmethionine (SMM) content in fresh leaves of Zhonghuang 1 (0.21 mg/g) was significantly higher than that of Fudingdabai (0.16 mg/g), which was an important reason for high DMS content.

Bimetallic Cu@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by the reduction of copper 2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]acetate with hydrazine hydrate in benzyl alcohol followed by the reduction of silver ions on the copper surface using a galvanic replacement reaction. Ink consisting of the assynthesized Cu@Ag NPs dispersed in a mixture of nontoxic solvents with different boiling temperatures (butanol and propylene glycol ethers) was prepared. Thin layers were spin coated on polyimide films using the developed ink. The conductive layer formed in air in the optimized conditions showed an electrical resistivity of 28.5 mu Omega.cm. Effects of three carp species on texture, color, and aroma properties of Chinese traditional fermented freshwater fish (Suan yu) were investigated. Suan yu were produced from Ctenopharyngodon idella (Grass Carp, GC), Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Silver Carp, SC), and Cyprinus carpio (Common Carp, CC) as the control. GC displayed the highest hardness and resilience, while SC showed the lowest texture except for springiness (p < .05). GC had the greatest L* and Delta E* values but the least a* value (p < .05). Esters (7), alcohols (7), acids (9), aldehydes (8), ketones (1), hydrocarbons (4), and others (5) were identified by GC-MS in all samples. E-nose analysis showed a remarkable difference in the overall aroma profile among all samples. Sensory evaluation and PCA analysis indicated that grass carp could be used as an alternative raw material for Suan yu production, which would improve the utilization of freshwater fish. Practical applications Suan yu is a type of Chinese traditional fermented freshwater fish with a unique flavor, which is popular among consumers. Such products are commonly manufactured from fresh common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with long-term anaerobic fermentation. Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are popular among consumers as major domesticated fish in China with higher annual harvests than that of common carp, which show potential as raw materials for Suan yu production. It is the first time to investigate the texture, color, and aroma of Suan yu produced from the three carp species (grass carp, silver carp, and common carp) in the same process and to evaluate their quality differences and acceptability.
