The butyric acid scaffold is the base structure of several human metabolites that serve diverse and prominent biochemical roles including as oxidative sources of cellular energy and as substrates for biosynthesis. Derivatization of metabolites through incorporation of fluorine often alters bioactivity and can facilitate detection and analysis by nuclear magnetic resonance or positron emission tomography depending upon the fluorine isotope employed. We describe the synthesis of two new fluorinated butyric acids (and three related esters) that are derivatives of the metabolites acetoacetic acid and 3-hydroxybutyric acid. 4-Fluoro-3-hydroxybutyric acid is prepared from epoxy ester precursors via ring opening by triethylamine trihydrofluoride. 2-Fluoroacetoacetic acid is prepared by electrophilic fluorination of an acid-labile -keto ester. The gradual pH-dependent decarboxylation of 2-fluoroacetoacetic acid is investigated by (19) F NMR spectroscopy.

Three novel heteropolyanion-based Bronsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs), butane mono sulfoacid-functionalized 1,10-phenanthrolinum, butane mono and bis sulfoacid-functionalized 1,4-dimethylpiperazinium salts of phosphortungstate catalyst (PhBs(1)-PW, [PipBs(1)](3)-PW and [PipBs(2)](3)-(PW)(2)) were synthesized and well characterized with FTIR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, Electro-Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS), Elemental analysis (CHNS), EDX and TG analysis techniques. The esterification reactions of monocarboxylic acids with monohydric alcohols were carried out using these catalysts. The introduced catalysts present a self-separation performance after reaction, which can be easily recovered and quite steadily reused as confirmed by six-run recycling test. Moreover, bis sulfoacidfunctionalized 1,4-dimethylpiperazinium salt of phosphortungstate showed the best catalytic performance among the prepared catalysts for the esterification reaction. Copper(ii)-guanidine acetic acid complex was immobilized on the surface of magnetized raw waste sawdust (SD) as an abundant natural biopolymer and employed as an efficient and recoverable catalyst in oxidative amidation reaction, while waste eggshell (ES) powder was used as a low-cost solid base. The magnetic raw catalyst was fully characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, TGA, and VSM. A variety of amide derivatives were successfully synthesized in moderate to good yields using benzyl alcohol and amine salts. The application of sawdust and eggshell as two natural and abundant waste materials is the main advantage of this research. Moreover, these low-cost catalysts were recovered at least five times and utilized in reaction systems with a minimal decrease in activity.

In this study, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay musts, and fruit juices from cherry, kiwi, peach, and strawberry were co-fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae EC1118 and Torulaspora delbrueckii UMY196 at two different proportions (80:20 (v/v) and 60:40 (v/v)). The most pleasant fruit-based drink was obtained with Cabernet Sauvignon must and kiwi juice in a proportion of 60:40 and fermented with T. delbrueckii. This beverage was produced in higher volume to simulate a scale-up, and the aromatic profile, sensory description, and consumer acceptability were determined. The most powerful odorants of the kiwi-based drink were ethyl octanoate, phenylethanal, ethyl hexanoate, vinyl-guaiacol, benzaldehyde, and nonanal, for which the odor activity values were 21.1, 3.3, 2.6, 2.2, 1.9, and 1.6, respectively. These findings were in accordance with the sensory analysis, since the emerged descriptors were fruity (ethyl octanoate), honey and floral (phenylethanal), apple and peach (ethyl hexanoate), and citrus (nonanal). The consumers judged the kiwi-based drink acceptable (67%) and 39% of them would buy it. The reliable fermentation of a grape must/fruit juice was demonstrated. The kiwi-based drink represents an innovative and pleasant beverage with a positive impact on sustainability as its production can limit the loss of fresh fruits, as well as contribute to the enological field.

Particle-stabilized emulsion systems have been developed to address the problematic properties of conventional surfactants. However, the nature and properties of the fine particles used in such systems remain a critical issue for stability enhancement. Herein, we describe a thermoswitchable oil-in-water (O/W) particle-stabilized emulsion that exhibits improved stability due to the addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) modified with poly[2-isopropoxy-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane] (PIPP), which exhibits relatively good biocompatibility and biodegradability. Various parameters, such as surface activity, concentration of particles, polarity of solvents, and temperatures, on the formation of emulsions with CNCs grafted with PIPP (CNC-g-PIPP) were investigated. Results showed that the surface activity of CNC-g-PIPP was significantly improved compared with the unmodified material. Heptane-in-water particle-stabilized emulsions with CNC-g-PIPP were stably formed, and the effect of temperature on the stability of the emulsions was characterized. CNC-g-PIPP exhibited function as an effective particulate emulsifier at 4 degrees C because of the strong adsorption at the oil-water interface. However, the emulsions rapidly disintegrated at 45 degrees C, which is above the low critical solution temperature of PIPP on CNC, as the hydrophobized CNC-g-PIPP desorbed from the oil-water interface. Based on these findings, a thermally induced reversible emulsification/demulsification was presented. The resulting switchable particle-stabilized emulsion based on CNC-g-PIPP shows promise for the ability to control the stability of an emulsion in response to temperature, which is attractive for use in biological applications.

The purpose of this study is to define an effective synthesis for spinel-type zinc chromite (ZnCr2O4) nanoparticles by a simple microwave combustion method. The synthesized material was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and from optical properties. A magnetic property for the material was examined through the vibrating sample magnetism. The distribution of the external magnetic lines of force and the self-generated magnetic field of ferromagnetic materials was taken into account in the presence of an external magnetic field. Zinc chromite showed good performances in catalytic oxidation, and the role of particle size and shape is highlighted.

The stability of micellar solutions of amiodarone hydrochloride in the presence of polysorbate-80 and benzyl alcohol was studied using fluorescence spectrometry with lambda(ex) = 420 m and lambda(em) = 506 nm. A formation scheme for mixed micelles consisting of nonionizable surfactant polysorbate-80 and cationic amiodarone with chloride counterion was proposed. Benzyl alcohol was found to lower the stability of the mixed micelles and lead to crystallization o f amiodarone hydrochloride. The counterion was replaced in the presence of acetate so that crystals of amiodarone acetate with a characteristic band for acetate carbonyl stretching vibrations v(C=O) at 1734 cm(-1) were formed. The solubilities of amiodarone hydrochloride and acetate in H2O at 20 degrees C were determined to be 0.33 and 0.058 mg/mL. A change of the amiodarone hydrochloride to polysorbate-80 mole ratio and avoidance of benzyl alcohol and acetate-containing solutions are recommended to improve the stability of the parenteral dosage form.
